electricsound, Friday, 15 June 2007 23:17 (sixteen years ago) link

i'm surprised dom earworm hasn't got you to do art for him shakey

electricsound, Friday, 15 June 2007 23:17 (sixteen years ago) link

I wouldn't say no, but he was, um uncommunicative when we tried to get something together in the past (previous incarnation of the band was slated to be one of earworm's final releases - didn't work out)

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 15 June 2007 23:22 (sixteen years ago) link

(but hey anybody who wants some artwork done point 'em my way, I work for cheap and/or free)

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 15 June 2007 23:22 (sixteen years ago) link

GAH you guys are all fucking awesome. I hade no idea you did (extremely spectacular) arts, Shakey Mo.

Yr mouf painting is incredible (and incredibly creepy) Jeff.

And to answer yr question, PP, it was just with some inky ball point, like a midline-price 12-pack kind you get from office supply stores, and a Sharpie to fill in the blacker fields. Same as comics, yeah. If I want to print or scan them, I usually just photocopy them first, which yields crisp lines & perfectly even black fields w/out scratchy pen/overlapping Sharpie marks.

Abbott, Friday, 15 June 2007 23:22 (sixteen years ago) link

I didn't get to photocopy that one (it's the original), so it still has sharpie overlap lines. :(

Abbott, Friday, 15 June 2007 23:24 (sixteen years ago) link

Shakey Mo, I am totally going to be in touch shortly.

caek, Friday, 15 June 2007 23:32 (sixteen years ago) link

In the meantime Shakey, can you say a bit about how you draw your images? Pen and ink + colours in Photoshop? I am curious about the mechanics of it.

Back when I was trying to draw a daily, introducing characters, etc.

TOM, re: blowing up, did you try Live Trace yet? It might do a good job with your line art. See, e.g. http://blog.wired.com/geekdad/2007/05/last_year_we_de.html

caek, Friday, 15 June 2007 23:46 (sixteen years ago) link

I've gotta go right now but briefly process is - pencil sketch->lightbox + black old-school rapidograph pen->scan into photoshop->fill in colors

altho sometimes I'll add the colors prior to scanning and kinda work with those in photoshop

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 15 June 2007 23:55 (sixteen years ago) link

(there's also a fair amount of collage work)

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 15 June 2007 23:55 (sixteen years ago) link

Fog in Melbourne last night. Ridiculously pea soup thick. Not like Melbourne whatsoever. Taken in a cab coming back from the airport:

Not the greatest photo ever but the fog and lights look pretty cool.

This is one I did for our Christmas E.P. I don't think the font for the label's logo goes, but I had to use it. The image is great though. It's from CHRISTMAS DAY DINNER held by CHICAGO BEACH HOTEL at CHICAGO ILL; (HOTEL).

being old and not knowing how to paint provides a great feeling of freedom. i am four years old and i don't give a damn!

scott seward, Saturday, 16 June 2007 00:17 (sixteen years ago) link

WOW Scott I would totally buy yr paintings. I love the portraits but esp. the helicopter!

Abbott, Saturday, 16 June 2007 00:20 (sixteen years ago) link

I love the TEXTURES on the portraits, they remind me of a lot of weird Mexican Catholic curios.

Abbott, Saturday, 16 June 2007 00:21 (sixteen years ago) link

Anyone want to do an art trade up in this? I would totally be down.

I just did a triptych of tools for a friend (hammer, screwdriver & wrench, all truncated) with really fatty/glommy brush strokes. It was super fun. I've been working on this fucking space crab/shrimp critter portrait for abt 2 years and I'm almost done but not quite. :(

Abbott, Saturday, 16 June 2007 00:23 (sixteen years ago) link

What kind of paint do you use, Scott? And Jeff, too?

Abbott, Saturday, 16 June 2007 00:25 (sixteen years ago) link

i think everyone should paint! or make art. and music. homemade art and music is joy. (maybe keep the homemade writing to yerself though. hahaha! oh god that's mean. but it's kinda true...er, not talking about anyone here. i already know how talented most ilxors really are. just in general. don't mind me. it's the hefeweizen talking.)

scott seward, Saturday, 16 June 2007 00:26 (sixteen years ago) link

i just use cheap acrylic paint. i'm scared of oil paint.

scott seward, Saturday, 16 June 2007 00:27 (sixteen years ago) link
