We're still stuck trying to figure out what the deal with Jacob is, whether Alpert's a "free agent," and how the Hawking woman ties into things and whether or not she's actually Daniel's mother.

Also...four toed statue?

We should have a new list thread for "Things Still To Be Answered on LOST"

widmore and his people "protected the island for over 30 years", but who from?

how did widmore and co get to the island?

did richard find it with them? or was he already there?

why did ben take the island from charles?

why does ben end up believing everyone must go back (after having killed locke only to tell jack that they'd have to bring him back too)?

how exactly did abbadon come to be locke's orderly in 2003?

who killed nadia and why?

what's the deal with the temple?

what the fuck is Jacob, smokemonster origin etc.

why does ben end up believing everyone must go back (after having killed locke only to tell jack that they'd have to bring him back too)?

this one is huge.

Local Garda, Friday, 27 February 2009 15:18 (fifteen years ago) link

I guess it's because Locke told Ben (because Alpert told Locke). Ben is smart enough to accept what Locke says because he's The One, but still wants to get back to the island even though he's not supposed to out of pure venal self-interest.

WmC, Friday, 27 February 2009 15:24 (fifteen years ago) link

I have a feeling Sun wasn't supposed to go back--and therefore doesn't end up with Jack-Kate-Hurley in the '70s. I think Sayyid is back there, but won't show up until he can do a badass reveal.

Maybe that's why Ben was surprised about Jin being alive--only one Korean was needed for whatever is supposed to go down and he thought it was Sun. Explains maybe why he didn't seem that concerned about her until she showed up with a gun. Of course he always has to have a rabbit up his sleeve so he took Jin's ring.

widmore and his people "protected the island for over 30 years", but who from?

outsiders

how did widmore and co get to the island?
British Island Expedition of 1960s

did richard find it with them? or was he already there?
Richard has always been there, even before there was an island.

why did ben take the island from charles?
Ben has always done whatever he wants, whenever he wants, because he's a goal-oriented sociopath.

why does ben end up believing everyone must go back (after having killed locke only to tell jack that they'd have to bring him back too)?
Locke told him about Eloise Hawking, who then told Ben that everyone had to go.

how exactly did abbadon come to be locke's orderly in 2003?
Alpert, Ben, and Widmore either collaboratively or separately having been keeping tabs on Locke since Locke showed up on the island back when Widmore was a solider.

who killed nadia and why?
Ben, to get Sayid to work for him. Or really, anybody since she was an Iraqi dissident at one point.

what's the deal with the temple?
It's where the island's security system, the smoke monster, comes from.

what the fuck is Jacob, smokemonster origin etc.
kooky island shit, built by an army of Alpert clones

bad answers dude sorry

O Supermanchiros (blueski), Friday, 27 February 2009 16:21 (fifteen years ago) link

if you think you're going to get anything more straightforward from the show, good luck

mh, Friday, 27 February 2009 16:22 (fifteen years ago) link

like, they'll show Ben kicking Widmore off, or at least convincing him to turn the donkey wheel, but it won't get any more deep than "Jacob told me you have to go" and the prime motivator for Ben to do anyone's will is because he wants to

mh, Friday, 27 February 2009 16:23 (fifteen years ago) link

i do actually think all of those questions will be answered/explained well enough eventually

O Supermanchiros (blueski), Friday, 27 February 2009 16:24 (fifteen years ago) link

if Jacob does turn out to be a godly human-ish being of some sort, they're gonna need an actor who is somehow more charismatic and authoritative than Ben, Widmore or Alpert to make us believe that these guys would actually take orders from him.

Some of these Unanswered Questions are like Huh?

Does Cindy know that her lover Gary Troup was on the plane? Does she know that he is dead?

What is the relationship between the dressing on Claire's head at the tattoo parlor ("Par Avion") and the one on her head in Jacob's cabin ("Cabin Fever")?"

What was the meaning of the dream Claire details in her diary about the "Black Rock" in the Episode ("Special") from Season One?

What were the consequences of Kilo not getting his share from the Jessica con? ("Confidence Man")

Why did Matthew Abaddon send a cultural anthropologist on the mission to find the Island?

I find the "four-toed statue" to be the least interesting unanswered question. Have Lindelof/Cuse indicated that it's a clue to something huge? It's always felt like a kind of goofy throwaway to me. Or maybe I'm just nervous that any extended explanation could be super cringe-y.

Man, I don't envy Lindelof and Cuse. A series finale fuck-up would be like David Chase x infinity for those dudes, press-wise (though I thought the Sopranos ending was awesome).

ice cr?m, Friday, 27 February 2009 17:02 (fifteen years ago) link

The four toed statue is probably linked to whatever is inside the temple, which is also presumably the answer to whatever the point of Smokey is.

Alanis Morrisette writing for Lostpedia:

Both Ben Linus and Charles Widmore have people watching all of the Oceanic plane crash survivors off the Island. (Irony)

President Keyes, Friday, 27 February 2009 18:03 (fifteen years ago) link

would not be surprised if both sun + sayid are in '08 with ben - they're the two who are most involved in the personal war between ben and widmore. whereas the rest seem more like pawns in a larger game involving the island itself.

The Arrow was one of the stations, I thought.

This was the episode where it struck me that Juliet is much hotter this year. She seems to have given up that puzzled-looking, harsh, and often unsettling facial expression. Sawyer's love has transformed her into a radiant beauty, oh yes, and then Kate shows up on the island looking like a junky. What a crackhead Kate is compared to how beautiful Juliet is now. To think I nearly gave up on this show.

70s juliet was way hotter than island juliet. lol sawyer makes her hot, but only because he loses is own hotness in giving it to her?

Maybe hotness on the island is a zero sum game? If everyone looks hot at the same time, the island moves.
