interesting continuity mistake this week - the actor who played the dharma security guard at the end has been used already as a different character in a bunch of episodes

i guess they'll say re Ben's "my mother taught me" that it was a joke and that Ben is sick enough to joke about his Mom that he never even met.

what they all look alike to you slocki

If Frank is meant to be on the island, then presumably he'd have been pulled out of the plane in the flash, just like jack/hurley/kate, right? Which would leave the plane without a pilot.

Don't worry, God is his co-pilot.

I'd like to see that plane when Frank and the O6 vanish in midair-- the stewardesses would probably think they'd ended up in a Tim LaHaye novel.

President Keyes, Friday, 20 February 2009 17:39 (fifteen years ago) link

they'd probably have other things on their mind.

Bah. Anyway:

The words from his father prompt Ben to run out of the house. He runs to the sonic fence, but stops just before he reaches it. He hears a brief whisper, then his mother appears on the other side of the fence. He goes to move towards her but she shouts, "Don't!" She says it's not time yet. Ben yells to her, then turns to go back home.

Pancakes Hackman, Friday, 20 February 2009 17:46 (fifteen years ago) link

ok but the point is she dead and why didn't he say 'father'

BECAUSE THE ISLAND DIDNT WANT HIM TO

first I was confused, then I was lulling.. thanks, dude

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Friday, 20 February 2009 18:08 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah max otm, apart from "fair isle", ben is obviously just joking, it's not like it matters if he knew/didn't know his mother, many people are taught to read by parents=LOL

also yeah, loved ben's "who cares!"

I initially thought the letter from Locke would say "Ben is not supposed to get back to the island and he was all mangled and beaten up cos he'd somehow cheated fate". Shame that didn't happen. When he was on the phone to Jack he looked like someone had just given birth to him.

Local Garda, Friday, 20 February 2009 18:11 (fifteen years ago) link

thought it was pretty f-ed up of locke to lay a guilt trip on jack like that, with his last words

max, Friday, 20 February 2009 18:13 (fifteen years ago) link

After the show is all over I hope Cuse/Lindelof will go into a little detail about what (if anything) changed in the overall show bible/mythology when they gave Ben more prominence.

WmC, Friday, 20 February 2009 18:16 (fifteen years ago) link

none i think. they were going to introduce a Ben-type character anyway, it just wasn't clear whether Michael Emerson would play him or not.

"JACK I WANT TO GO TO THE ISLAND WHICH IS WHY WE CAN NEVER SPEAK ABOUT WHERE AARON IS, AT LEAST NOT UNTIL A FEW EPISODES OF OUR LIVES HAVE FINISHED"

I think Pacey is basically right - it seemed for a while like the writers were intending to make Tom the leader of the Others, before Henry Ian Cuisack turned up and blew that idea away.

Pacey Twitter (Roz), Friday, 20 February 2009 19:23 (fifteen years ago) link

Does he talk about Lost other than introducing the "Secrets of Lost" though? I figured it was something the network was making him do.

WmC, Friday, 20 February 2009 19:28 (fifteen years ago) link

nah he really is a huge fan. he's done some other stuff for them - he hosted a Lost panel a couple of years ago, and had an alleged Hanso Foundation rep appear on his show to kick off the Lost Experience.

Pacey Twitter (Roz), Friday, 20 February 2009 19:39 (fifteen years ago) link

The line was definitely crossed for me when Lady Time told Jack to take something of his father's and put it in Locke's coffin. I'm sure the line "Stop thinking about how ridiculous it is and ask yourself whether you believe it's going to work" is a blatant plea to the viewers (to me, "it's going to work" = having a non-shit ending that doesn't explain anything) almost as an apology.

I can understand, a bit, why they might want to re-create the conditions of the 315 crash. What I don't understand is why, seeing as 99% of everything about the 316 plane is different, putting one item in the coffin will make any difference. At least Jack didn't have to jump through hoops to get the magic bloody shoes (although we did have to put up with a crowbarred-in storyline about his granddad). The only thing I can think of that would make me even slightly less angry about this is if later it becomes apparent that the shoes are key, and that Lady Time had to tell Jack exactly that pile of crap to get him to bring them.

Also, Jack woke up in the jungle and had to run a fair distance to find Hurley & Kate. Why do they instantly assume the others aren't there?

I did like the pendulum stuff though - Desmond walking through that bit was like tempting fate - like what if he'd bumped into it and sent it out of whack....... or maybe he DID.....

I like how all the characters were presumably just accepting that all the other passengers on 316 would either die or just join the ever-decreasing gang of insignificant redshirts.

I'm starting to work out the names of the Dharma stations as well - the Lamppost is the entry point to Narnia in the Lion The Witch And The Wardrobe, the Looking Glass and the Tempest are both entry points to magical worlds as well. Not sure about the others.

The lamppost in Narnia is actually the way back to the real world rather than the other way round.... I'm sure the writers don't care though (also, a Dharma station called the Wardrobe would be crap).

Plus, I get this nagging suspicion that the writers are taking advantage of the narrative-as-mosaic in order to gloss over certain things that they have no intention of actually returning to.

This is bugging me more and more as we go on.

"What I don't understand is why, seeing as 99% of everything about the 316 plane is different, putting one item in the coffin will make any difference."

Every apparition in Jacob's cabin is a blood-relative of Jack (so jacob is actually aged jack stuck in time vortex?) The interviews with Locke are a kind of adoption process, and the island is from an alien race (from the horseshoe nebula) that uses shoes to transmit genetic information -- so Locke is finally made part of the Shepherd family by the shoe-host because he passed the ultimate test.

Observing recent Jin controversy prompted me to repost this gem (for the LOLZ):

Haha Daniel and Jin alone in the sea together would be hilarious, they just wouldn't be able to communicate with one another. Jin would look at Daniel earnestly and say in his best English "do you want fish?" and Dan would be staring right past him and going "well... fish is kind of an elastic concept at this point..."

one of the main problems. she works as a supernatural-type apparition character in the ep where desmond goes to london, but not as a real person.

it looks to me like they've added too much complexity with the moving island thing. it must've stopped moving when the sky turned purple, so that widmore could find it. but wasn't it special enough already?

note should said "DON'T GET ON THE PLANE, 'K?"

"the flight attendant is standing right there! she's going to know something is up!" But no

was thinkin the same "say this lot look like... wait it IS those guys off of the telly who survived that... OH WAH"

i was wondering, where is cindy or whatever she's called. that would have been funny. also yeah note was underwhelming and weird.

"olympics rings" (special guest stars mark bronson), Sunday, 22 February 2009 12:57 (fifteen years ago) link

I would not have been surprised at that point if that note had been in secret island symbol code, or mirror writing, which is near indecipherable according to the Da Vinci Code.
