It's funny how a lot of reviews I've read seem to say "this is the line!" where suspension of disbelief is just going too far - interesting.

As much as I still enjoy the show, I too feel they're pushing it. Or it's pushing me to the line where the mystery becomes the absurd. The first two, three seasons for me were special because it was so intruiging. The writing was also slower, and ofcourse we want to know everything, but the way how Lady Faraday just blurted out a near complete history of the island yesterday was a bit too much for me. The narrative gets so sped up now it's almost spinning out of control.

i think the recreating flight 815 thing is fine, it's the near complete lack of curiosity from the main characters that's gotten bothersome. anyway, sepinwall's recap nails exactly what was wrong with this episode: it centred around jack, the one guy who has no reservations left about returning to the island, so there was no drama or obstacle to get past. it would've been much more interesting to see what convinced kate or hurley (and i'm sure we'll get those stories soon anyway) but it just made *this* particular episode boring and absurd.

I think they just wanted to get the O6 back to the island as quickly as possible, somewhat wisely really.

Maximo Park Ji-Sung (Matt DC), Friday, 20 February 2009 10:01 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah true i was very glad that they didn't wait until mid-season to get everyone back.

Disco/Very (Roz), Friday, 20 February 2009 10:08 (fifteen years ago) link

Do we know what the significance is of Hurley bringing (Charlie's?) guitar? Can this be looked at the same way as Jack 'brought' his father's shoes? Bring something from the dead?

Gerard (Le Bateau Ivre), Friday, 20 February 2009 10:11 (fifteen years ago) link

Maybe Aaron's hidden in the guitar case.

David Bentley: Rhythm Ace (Matt DC), Friday, 20 February 2009 11:23 (fifteen years ago) link

I felt really let down by that episode. The Mrs Hawking stuff was just terrible:
"THIS IS HOW THEY FOUND THE ISLAND"
"O K COOL HOW ARE WE GET BACK?"

Sorry? I think you meant to ask:

WHAT IS THE DHARMA INITIATIVE?
HOW CAN A F***ING ISLAND MOVE THROUGH SPACE AND TIME?
WHY DO WE NEED TO GO BACK?

I understand that it's Lost and people don't ask questions but this series it really is descending into self-parody. Is THAT really the best explanation we are going to get about how to get to/from the island? I really hope not.

All that said, I'm really pleased they have got them back on the island by episode 5 when most of us were convinced it would take the whole series. That it took such a sloppy episode to achieve this = meh

all my single lobsters put a ring on it (tpp), Friday, 20 February 2009 11:59 (fifteen years ago) link

OK Can we try to sort this one out (it hurts my head):

Desmond goes to buy Penny a ring from Mrs Hawking but changes his mind, then ends up going on a boat race and eventually on the island.

After the hatch explodes Desmond ('s consciousness?) travels back in time and he goes to try to buy Penny a ring again but this time tries to go through with it. Mrs Hawking convinces him not to, and that his destiny is to go to the island.

But initially, the first time around (if this even means anything?), Desmond went to the island without any persuasion from Mrs Hawking. Why then does he blame her for the 4 years of his life he spent on the island?

all my single lobsters put a ring on it (tpp), Friday, 20 February 2009 12:05 (fifteen years ago) link

I think the second time round became the 'official' event, ie Desmond rewrote his past with Mrs Hawking in it?

David Bentley: Rhythm Ace (Matt DC), Friday, 20 February 2009 12:12 (fifteen years ago) link

The more you think about Desmond the more confusing it becomes.

David Bentley: Rhythm Ace (Matt DC), Friday, 20 February 2009 12:12 (fifteen years ago) link

isn't Ben killing Penny going the only reason Des would be motivated to return to the island (i.e. revenge), assuming that he will at some stage?

O Supermanchiros (blueski), Friday, 20 February 2009 12:19 (fifteen years ago) link

So when you travel back in time - you can change small stuff, you can have different conversations, but you can't change 'big' things like going on a boat race? Makes no sense - where does the separation of scales occur? This event has 20% more universal importance that that event, universe says no sorry.

all my single lobsters put a ring on it (tpp), Friday, 20 February 2009 12:26 (fifteen years ago) link

it's more that the ISLAND says no (and not sorry)

O Supermanchiros (blueski), Friday, 20 February 2009 12:30 (fifteen years ago) link

Desmond is special somehow, I think is the thing.

David Bentley: Rhythm Ace (Matt DC), Friday, 20 February 2009 12:37 (fifteen years ago) link

I am half thinking 'actually just never explain why/how Hurley and Sayid got on the plane' because it might be more fun than whatever dumb explanation they'll eventually provide.

O Supermanchiros (blueski), Friday, 20 February 2009 12:41 (fifteen years ago) link

Lady with the badge escorting Sayid probably working for Ben.

I think she may be a real Marshall, but it was def. Ben who tipped someone off about the golf course murder.

When Ben would say "all six of you have to go back," was he including John but not Aaron?

Maybe he meant Frank. He was supposed to be piloting O-815, and keeps being drawn to the island. Maybe that's why Smokey attacked the fat guy from Heroes--he got pissed that Lapidus wasn't the pilot.

President Keyes, Friday, 20 February 2009 12:42 (fifteen years ago) link

hmm i like that

O Supermanchiros (blueski), Friday, 20 February 2009 12:45 (fifteen years ago) link

I kind of like that they followed Jack's POV. They had so much stuff to get through in this episode, it would have been too much if they had dealt with or followed any of the characters whose reasons for going back needed explaining.

WmC, Friday, 20 February 2009 13:09 (fifteen years ago) link

Sorry? I think you meant to ask:

WHAT IS THE DHARMA INITIATIVE?
HOW CAN A F***ING ISLAND MOVE THROUGH SPACE AND TIME?
WHY DO WE NEED TO GO BACK?

From the viewpoint of the people standing in the room in that scene, how are any of those questions important? Maybe, conceivably, to Jack, on an intellectual level. But Ben knows the answer to #1, and thinks he knows #3, and doesn't really care about #2. For Sun, none of those questions is key to the task, "Just get me back to my husband." Desmond doesn't care about any of them, because he isn't going anywhere anyway. So which of the characters was supposed to ask those questions?

Pancakes Hackman, Friday, 20 February 2009 13:20 (fifteen years ago) link

And if anyone had asked those questions Hawking would have had to say "Hold your damn horses, we've still got another season and a half."

Though I would have liked it if Sun had asked about the four toed statue and Hawking told her she needed to bring along a giant shoe in her luggage.

President Keyes, Friday, 20 February 2009 13:28 (fifteen years ago) link

and that they'd need some heroin, and Jack would need to persuade the stewardess to give him extra vodka

O Supermanchiros (blueski), Friday, 20 February 2009 13:47 (fifteen years ago) link

i think ajira airways crashed in 2007/2008 and three kings dude + sayid's escort + whoever else were prob the people in that boat shooting at the time-jumpers. Those people didn't crash in the 70s because they weren't meant to be there.

So what year does resurrected Locke end up in?

President Keyes, Friday, 20 February 2009 14:10 (fifteen years ago) link

I just think IRL if someone told me about a moving island I'd probably wanna know a little more that these guys did before I hopped on a plane to magically get back to it for no reason.

all my single lobsters put a ring on it (tpp), Friday, 20 February 2009 14:13 (fifteen years ago) link

I mean sure, yeah, when Sawyer doesn't ask Locke what he's been doing in the jungle for the last two episodes...I can deal...but it's a MOVING ISLAND FFS

all my single lobsters put a ring on it (tpp), Friday, 20 February 2009 14:15 (fifteen years ago) link

It isn't for no reason it is to find Jin, and to stop Juliet, Sawyer etc from dying.

Pancakes Hackman is OTM really. And we don't yet know what Locke said to Jack and how he convinced him, which is the really important bit. I think Jack probably has an idea precisely why they need to go back.

David Bentley: Rhythm Ace (Matt DC), Friday, 20 February 2009 14:16 (fifteen years ago) link

Well, they knew the island was weird already. They saw even saw it move. It sounded like Hawking was saying "yes--it does move and it's hard to find but we figured out how to find it." I don't know what Jack & Sun could have asked her at that point--to explain the physics of the movement in greater detail?

President Keyes, Friday, 20 February 2009 14:19 (fifteen years ago) link

Basically I'm really looking forward to the inevitable bit where Jin, Hurley and Sawyer meet Horace and are all like "uh, sorry we snapped your head off dude".

it was Ben's dick of a dad, Roger "Workman" whose head they snapped off.. I do agree though that Sawyer will bring total Dharma LOLs & I can't wait.

Love this!

I wish that if Kate is pregnant she had waited 'til she got to the island so that eventually she'd die..

If Frank is meant to be on the island, then presumably he'd have been pulled out of the plane in the flash, just like jack/hurley/kate, right? Which would leave the plane without a pilot. So yeah, seems more likely that the rest of the passengers would end up crashing than flying on to Guam.

maybe the island sometimes moves to near BERMUDA

i feel like ive said this before but one of the things i love love love about this show is its use of the earnest 70s new-age science shit that dharma does (incl. the richard alpert reference which my parents have a guffaw about every wed)--i feel like that milieu (or whatever) doesnt show up often enough in sci fi

max, Friday, 20 February 2009 14:36 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah Frank is so going back to the Island. I bet the creepy guy who's following them is as well (some Widmore lackey maybe). Interesting that Ben didn't seem bothered by his presence, maybe he intended him to be there, or maybe he just didn't care. It was Hurley who was most concerned about minimising the number of passengers on the plane.

It isn't for no reason it is to find Jin, and to stop Juliet, Sawyer etc from dying.

but why though? i can understand wanting to find Jin but why would the O6 not leaving mean that the rest wouldn't die? If they hadn't left, wouldn't they also be time-skipping, and nose-bleeding with the rest and they would still have to go and fix the wheel anyway? it's totally not clear why the O6 needed to be on the island aside from some vague destiny still unfulfilled. but that doesn't seem to have anything to do with saving the ones left behind.

Don't worry, God is his co-pilot.

Pancakes Hackman, Friday, 20 February 2009 14:53 (fifteen years ago) link

the problem with finding out why is that Locke is the person who's supposed to have told them why they needed to go back, but so far Locke only knows what we know. xp

Pacey Twitter (Roz), Friday, 20 February 2009 14:57 (fifteen years ago) link

so Hurley brought a guitar because Charlie had a guitar right? i suppose the island is looking for 'an effort' to be made by each of them in this respect. and it's the thought that counts.

maybe Kate just gave Aaron to Claire's Mum (but then why the secrecy).
