flesh, the devil, and a wolf (wolf) (amateurist), Saturday, 6 July 2013 08:58 (ten years ago) link

everyone will probably tell you House of Nan King which I kind of like but can be very hit and miss. I can't remember any good places I ate in, sorry!

kinder, Saturday, 6 July 2013 11:23 (ten years ago) link

Seeing as how I don't really like chinese food, I'd recommend Penang Garden.

Fetchboy, Saturday, 6 July 2013 11:44 (ten years ago) link

City View has good dim sum.

One bad call from barely losing to (Alex in SF), Saturday, 6 July 2013 13:33 (ten years ago) link

just1n3, Saturday, 6 July 2013 19:48 (ten years ago) link

not after landing: WHILE landing

when was the last time there was a crash at SFO? I can't remember

Rumor right now is no fatalities - here's hoping.

Do you like spicy? Eat at Pot Sticker! Make sure to get Sichuan specialties.

eris bueller (lukas), Saturday, 6 July 2013 20:25 (ten years ago) link

mr veg saw a passenger tweet that said "most ppl seemed ok" which isnt exactly stats but somewhat heartening

I read that there are two dead. BTW I'm sitting at SEATAC waiting for my flight to SFO to start boarding.

Ugh. Now rebooked to Tuesday and trying to extract our luggage from this god damn airport.

schwantz, Saturday, 6 July 2013 23:08 (ten years ago) link

sry to ask during this plane crash, but if i stay in japantown will it be hard to get around?

i've been baffled by san francisco transit for years and am nervous about staying not near the bart.

511.org is my savior when I'm intimidated by SF public transportation.

Fetchboy, Sunday, 7 July 2013 01:47 (ten years ago) link

Not joking, but why would it be hard to get around? The airport is a long way from Japantown. Stay off the 38 and try to take the 38L so much faster getting downtown or anywhere.

svend, Sunday, 7 July 2013 02:12 (ten years ago) link

idk you ppl have one train and a bunch of buses and i never know what to do

call all destroyer, Sunday, 7 July 2013 02:17 (ten years ago) link

1. Get a MUNI three-day pass

polyphonic, Sunday, 7 July 2013 02:24 (ten years ago) link

Hop on the back for free. They never check.

svend, Sunday, 7 July 2013 02:25 (ten years ago) link

SF transit is easy, you just have to know that when people talk about MUNI they could be talking about a tram that may be overground or underground, or a regular bus. It doesn't make much difference practically but good to know. If it's a letter (J, K, etc) it's a tram and they all go underground around Market St. If it's a number it's a bus.
The BART is all underground and isn't nec that good for getting around SF itself but is quick to the East Bay, airport etc

kinder, Sunday, 7 July 2013 12:34 (ten years ago) link

oh wait the F line stays above-ground. Also it's the slowest thing imaginable.

yeah i've discovered you can basically buy one bus ticket ($2) for an entire stay and never have to buy another.

btw we got to chinatown late and few places were open. bottom line: we ate in one of the worst restaurants i've ever been to. i didn't finish 10% of my food.

I'm going to call it at the Grand Cafe on Taylor and Geary, unless someone knows somewhere awesome nearish. We can have cocktails next to the Donnie Darko threeway sculpture.

If anyone's at the Stinking Rose tonight, say hello to the table with at least one person with blue hair.

The bar's pretty good for a hotel bar. I've been there many times.

If I'm in that area or have ppl staying at the Monaco, I'd be more inclined to dine at

but I think I like the Grand Cafe bar better.

Acting Gov. Gavin Newsom arrived a half-hour late for the opening ceremony of the new Bay Bridge span and watched most of it from the sidelines.

After riding across the bridge with a motorcycle escort (and slowing down long enough to videotape the crossing for his kids), Newsom had to take a last-minute tutorial on how to use the welding torch to cut the chain marking the bridge's opening.

"Cal/OSHA certified the hair gel," he said. "They didn't want me to burn myself."

Hello Bay Areaxors! I am in town for a bit! Today and Thursday I am gonna chill here in Oakland, but I'm planning to cross the bay tomorrow and Saturday. My priorities are Golden Gate Park (tomorrow) and the Ferry Building market (Saturday). Culinary goals are oysters (I'm thinking Swan's Oyster Depot for that) and pho (suggestions on that are most welcome).

Any recommendations for eats in Oakland? Is the Burma Superstar over here a good bet? Any good Chinese (I would love DUMPLINGS!! and noodles, especially)? Also craving a great reuben or other deli sandwich. This is all stuff I'm sorely missing at my current outpost in rural Mexico.

quincie, Tuesday, 24 September 2013 20:48 (ten years ago) link

If you are at the Ferry building, just go to Hog Island IN the Ferry building for oysters.

For DUMPLINGS!, maybe hit Shanghai Dumpling King (http://www.yelp.com/biz/shanghai-dumpling-king-san-francisco) over on Balboa and 34th when you are at GG Park?

Have fun!

Burma Superstar is good. Get the tea leaf salad and the samusa soup.

Get DUMPLINGS! here: http://www.eastbayexpress.com/oakland/the-dumpling-of-champions/Content?oid=3713488, or at Shan Dong (they make their own noodles, and also make good DUMPLINGS!).

Get a deli sandwich at Genova Deli in Temescal.

polyphonic, Tuesday, 24 September 2013 20:52 (ten years ago) link

I thought Burma Superstar was in Alameda, not Oakland...?

what's up ugly girls? (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 24 September 2013 20:54 (ten years ago) link

dunno about delis in Oakland but the best reuben sandwich in SF is at Wise Sons on 24th St in the Mission. imho

There's one in Alameda on Park and one on Telegraph in Temescal.

polyphonic, Tuesday, 24 September 2013 20:55 (ten years ago) link

Actually I think the best reuben in the east bay might be at Saul's in Berkeley now that I think about it. Genova is better for italian sandwiches.
