And also, if you can point to a behaviour and say 'yes, this behaviour is more natural than this other behaviour, if I do more of this I will be more natural', you're making a conscious/intellectual choice to do so, which by the oft total bullshit anti-intellectual standard of 'being natural', you're not supposed to do

I am trying to generously assume this is supposed to be satire, but it's too mean-spirited.

mh, Tuesday, 16 July 2013 21:29 (ten years ago) link

title suggests that it's about the characters encountered in "trend stories", not human beings or anyone's actual culture. but i dunno. nothing in the piece backs that up, no quotations from or links to representative examples.

mh, Tuesday, 16 July 2013 23:39 (ten years ago) link

eep! there are. dunno how i missed that, except dumbness of course.

1 dumb opinion: seems like satire of the pieces linked/

twerking for obvious reasons (contenderizer), Tuesday, 16 July 2013 23:44 (ten years ago) link

oh wait, selective color blindness. i missed the links cuz of selective color blindness. it's a condition.

twerking for obvious reasons (contenderizer), Tuesday, 16 July 2013 23:44 (ten years ago) link

I uh...I didn't think it was mean? I read those trend stories, one of them just came out like last week and has been making the rounds and inspiring reaction pieces left and right, which I think is the specific piece almost all of those types are references to.

Tottenham Heelspur (in orbit), Tuesday, 16 July 2013 23:48 (ten years ago) link

I get that it's an acerbic take on the horrible sexist stereotypes in articles but the phrase,
" She is the tenuous link between the trio of campus plagues — binge-drinking, hookup culture, sexual assault — not the guy who is into sex with half-conscious women."
...still managed to make me nauseated, even if it's referencing what those other articles are insinuating.

mh, Tuesday, 16 July 2013 23:51 (ten years ago) link

If you mean the fact that trend pieces about young women's sexuality and "hook-up culture" are concern-trolling in every possible way, one of which is tacitly (or explicitly, take your pick) blaming women for non-consensual sexual experiences, then yes, I support being offended by that. I'm not sure what part is nauseating, though?

Tottenham Heelspur (in orbit), Tuesday, 16 July 2013 23:55 (ten years ago) link

That phrase

mh, Tuesday, 16 July 2013 23:59 (ten years ago) link

One of my friends just told me one of his conservative acquaintances just posted that article to facebook, not realizing it was a criticism of the stereotypes used in other articles, and not a description of actual "types."

:/

For Immediate Release
College Girls Are Paying Tuition Bills with Their Social Networking Skills on MyGirlFund

LOS ANGELES, CA-- Jul 25, 2013 - MyGirlFund.com reports that young female college students on summer break are flocking to its website. While students aged 18-22 normally comprise 25% of the adult social network's 6,000 plus female member base, since the academic year ended over 500 matriculating college students have joined. MyGirlFund's Stefan Patrick says the trend suggests that young women are pursuing creative ways of earning tuition money in the face of a sluggish summer job market.
According to a recent ABC news report, only half of young adults will be able to find summer employment. Meanwhile, college tuition and student loan costs have skyrocketed. "Members list their financial goals when they join," Patrick says, "and the new coeds are vocal about their tuition needs. One new member penned the memorable line, 'When good girls can't pay their tuition, anything can happen,' on her profile, but overall these are young women who would never consider stripping, porn or public group cam shows."
They are attracted to MyGirlFund, Patrick says, because it empowers them as autonomous economic agents in a social networking setting that is similar to mainstream sites like Facebook. "The young women joining our site," Patrick says, "appreciate the total autonomy we grant them. They are free to set their own prices for the content and interaction they chose to provide. They work when they want to from the privacy of their own homes. They also appreciate the extra steps we take to ensure that what happens on MyGirlFund stays on MyGirlFund. We operate the site as a closed, private environment so members don't have to worry about exposure or leaked content. Our female members are comfortable and guys respond positively to confident, expressive and goal-driven women."
As far as how much college students are earning on MyGirlFund, Patrick says it is a function of time and effort. "We know that a number of young women have earned degrees, undergraduate and graduate, with the contributions they receive on MyGirlFund and that many others are able to support their families. At the very least, the new girls will be able to partially defray exorbitant tuition costs while doing what many are likely already doing on social media sites like Facebook, tumblr and Instagram."

still really pissed abt an acquaintance of mine. last night was out w/ a bunch of ppl and a fried who is a v. smart roboticist doing v. cool things with swarms of 'em is there. she discusses a bit about difficulties of being in a male field, etc, but also how they're working to hire women in academia, etc. other dude starts being holier than tho about if you 'really want gender parity' and also starts to keep bringing up that he is brown and has a hard time with airplane security checks (nb. she is asian). also starts talking about 'men explaining my field to me' tumblr. ok fine. then later as she's talking about her research of course he starts explaining her field to her, going on and on about math (he knows quite a bit, but only has an undergrad degree, i think, and certainly no real world experience w. robotics) and talking about how a 'serious mathematician' would handle the various hamiltonian manifold this and that. i was appalled. he's young and arrogant but i don't think he'd have ever been that much of a dick to a man.

oh and he mentions some technique in algebraic geometry and she says 'yeah i don't really know how to apply that' and he says "xxx (her husband) can help you with that." Why would he be able to help? He's in the same field as her, but there's no reason to think that he knows more about that sort of math -- if anything, she's got more of a background in that field.

just tremendously depressing.
