except when he's dressed like Bono in the future.

so is mrs hawking's church a dharma related building then? the computers seem similar in the episodes so far.

Local Garda, Wednesday, 18 February 2009 01:18 (fifteen years ago) link

She seems to have Others and Widmore ties--I don't know about Dharma though.

HURLEY'S READING Y: THE LAST MAN!

Beardless Frank!

President Keyes, Thursday, 19 February 2009 02:52 (fifteen years ago) link

Who thinks the island would've been moving through time every 108 minutes if Desmond wasn't down there punching in the code?

"How can you read?"
"My mother taught me."

Ben's mother died in childbirth. Was he just being a smartass, or is there something to it?

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 19 February 2009 03:10 (fifteen years ago) link

I wondered that about Ben's mother too. It's possible that someone else helped raise him besides his alcoholic father, and that's who he's referring to.

I shall always respect my elders (Z S), Thursday, 19 February 2009 03:14 (fifteen years ago) link

Beardless Frank is unnerving.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 19 February 2009 03:16 (fifteen years ago) link

Dharma Jin is in a newish van and clean jumpsuit, so they're in the 70s right now, right?

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 19 February 2009 03:17 (fifteen years ago) link

I think he was just being an ass.

Looking forward to finding out how Hurley was convinced (threats to his parents probably), what happened to Aaron, what the Sayid-in-custody story is. But I hope they keep it brief.

xpost, yeah (70s).

WmC, Thursday, 19 February 2009 03:18 (fifteen years ago) link

So let me get this straight: Sun demands that Ben tell her how he knows that Jin is alive or she will kill him. Ben promises he can prove it to her and drives her to Ms. Hawking, who says they all need to go back to the island but doesn't mention anything about who's still on the island. Instead of asking about Jin or following through on her threat to Ben, who has clearly proven nothing, Sun just wanders away.

Bianca Jagger (jaymc), Thursday, 19 February 2009 03:18 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah, that was pretty clumsy.

WmC, Thursday, 19 February 2009 03:19 (fifteen years ago) link

Most of this episode was clearly left vague so they can fill things in over the next howevermany weeks.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 19 February 2009 03:20 (fifteen years ago) link

i thought the guy from "la haine" was on it before but i was getting the episode where sayid infiltrates the terrorists in australia mixed up with that don cheadle movie "traitor".

LaMonte, Thursday, 19 February 2009 03:34 (fifteen years ago) link

also, jack asks ben about how he knows mrs. hawking, ben mumbles something about faith and jack doesn't follow up.

abanana, Thursday, 19 February 2009 03:39 (fifteen years ago) link

speaking of not following up.. does anyone ever ask Ben or anyone what the purpose of the dharma initiative is or why they have to return to the island etc..

seems like those sort of things would be asked a lot every season.... but no... apparently the lost survivors don't care.

CaptainLorax, Thursday, 19 February 2009 04:18 (fifteen years ago) link

no one even asks ben how he got beaten up, so forget about the bigger questions. the O6 are a bunch of idiots.

so recreating flight 815 with proxies huh - hurley was reading comics (Walt) and carrying a guitar case (Charlie), sayid seemed to have been escorted by a US marshal (like Kate), and who wants to bet that Kate is pregnant (Claire)? Hurley doesn't really need anyone to convince him to go back btw, island hallucinations do it for him.

theory of the week: stuck-in-the-70s Juliet helped raise Ben, which is why the Others' therapist lady told her "You look just like her" and why Ben is so attached to her.

Disco/Very (Roz), Thursday, 19 February 2009 05:26 (fifteen years ago) link

where is Walt anyway?

Disco/Very (Roz), Thursday, 19 February 2009 05:28 (fifteen years ago) link

2 ears + 1 ❤ (Pillbox), Thursday, 19 February 2009 05:53 (fifteen years ago) link

yikes that line. because I thought at first that Ben got beaten up by Charles Widmore, but now I just got a sickening feeling that he killed Penny, and it was Desmond who beat him up. :( :(

JACK I WISH U BELIEVED KBYE

President Keyes, Thursday, 19 February 2009 11:58 (fifteen years ago) link

Biblical stuff was inevitable I guess but I don't know--

Jack is Doubting Thomas--what did he do after he started believing?
Locke is Suicide Jesus?
Christian/Jacob/Island are God? Devil?
Hurley is St. John

President Keyes, Thursday, 19 February 2009 12:12 (fifteen years ago) link

Oh yeah and Ben reading Ulysses on the plane--
that Ajira website has a Joyce quotation written into its source code:

"So off they started about Irish sport and shoneen games the like of lawn tennis and about hurley and putting the stone and racy of the soil and building up a nation once again and all of that."

President Keyes, Thursday, 19 February 2009 12:34 (fifteen years ago) link

& this--

Jack put White shoes on Christian's corpse and Black ones on Locke's.

President Keyes, Thursday, 19 February 2009 12:37 (fifteen years ago) link

mixed up with that don cheadle movie "traitor"

don't you mean three kingz

cutty, Thursday, 19 February 2009 12:52 (fifteen years ago) link

That was a bad episode.

Not horrible, but definitely worst of this season.

Bianca Jagger (jaymc), Thursday, 19 February 2009 13:34 (fifteen years ago) link

The thing that didn't make sense-- why did they have to recreate the conditions of the original crash? It seems like vehicles are crashing in to island all the time. Do all of them have a junkie hobbit, an incestuous bro-sis team, a priest/drug warlord, etc?

President Keyes, Thursday, 19 February 2009 13:47 (fifteen years ago) link

nothing crashed

cutty, Thursday, 19 February 2009 14:56 (fifteen years ago) link

I get that certain things are left unexplained because the show is going to come back to them later, but for no one to ask each other basic questions really strains credulity. This has been true of the entire series, but it was especially annoying in last night's episode. Plus, I get this nagging suspicion that the writers are taking advantage of the narrative-as-mosaic in order to gloss over certain things that they have no intention of actually returning to.

Bianca Jagger (jaymc), Thursday, 19 February 2009 15:32 (fifteen years ago) link

Jack put White shoes on Christian's corpse and Black ones on Locke's.

yeah there is some whole theory of the shoes on some of the blogs but I don't really know what it's about. the last time Christian appeared to jack (in the hospital sometime) people were like "and once again Christian has on the white shoes"

After seeing Jesus alive and being offered the opportunity to touch his wounds — according to the author of the Gospel of John — Thomas professed his faith in Jesus; on this account he is also called Thomas the Believer.

― Local Garda

missed this.. nice one!

I am thinking that maybe Sayid was cuffed because Ben went to go convince him to come along and suffered the "unfortunate consequences" Sayid mentioned..

I also love & subscribe to the idea that Juliet may be the very person she's told she "looks just like" in Ben's childhood thanks to them being new Dharma recruits... I wonder if Charlotte died because she couldn't exist for long as two copies (young girl & adult) on the island?

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Thursday, 19 February 2009 16:17 (fifteen years ago) link

think they needed this so that the island could recognize the ones who should never have left and drop them in the correct timeline - all the other 815-ers are in the 70s. If Ajira Airways did crash, i think it prob crashed on the island in 2007.

Disco/Very (Roz), Thursday, 19 February 2009 17:00 (fifteen years ago) link

I'm hoping we see Juliette teaching baby Ben to read soon.

the stuff that gets glossed over is annoying, but at the same time, this was the most straighforward and explanatory episode in ages, and that was kind of annoying too. Having Eloise come in and tell everyone what is going on was too blatant, I don't care for characters as mouthpieces for the writers. I kind of like it when I don't know what is going on and there is still a lot of mystery; when things start getting pulled together, I feel the hands of the producers too clearly.

akm, Thursday, 19 February 2009 17:28 (fifteen years ago) link

When Ben got jealous that Eloise kept Jack "after class" I expected Ben to shoot him and dump him in a pit of corpses.
