So many great new characters: Diana Rigg as kindly (?) supersmart matriarch! Two supercool slightly creepy wizard teens! A wily drunken swordsman-rebel with a wicked archer of a pal!

did not catch that was diana rigg. she was real good.

He was mentioned in passing at one point by Robert but I believe that was his first on-screen appearance.

finally! Jaime Lannister and Brienne fight!

loved watching him get pwned!
backing up to the first episode of the season, what happened when the "200 northmen were slaughtered" and why was it Lady Stark's fault again? I'm a little lost on that plotline, when they rode up to the massacred village or whatever. don't even know exactly where that was supposed to be.
― dmr, Monday, 8 April 2013 17:31 (eleven years ago) link
did he CONTROVERSIAL MOD EDIT
― attempt to look intentionally nerdy, awkward or (thomp), Monday, 8 April 2013 17:33 (eleven years ago) link
the 'village' is castle harrenhal, where tywin and the lannisters are were camped before the battle, and where arya and pals escaped from. presumably the 200 northmen were killed by them as they left? it is not entirely clear where the 200 northmen came from, perhaps it will be explained. the lady stark bit is referencing her releasing jamie lannister, who killed karstark's 2 sons.
and thomp's post is probably closer to a spoiler than a no spoilers thread really wants
― Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 8 April 2013 17:47 (eleven years ago) link
all right thanks. makes sense. maybe the 200 northmen were among the people being held prisoner there? I didn't get whether Lady Stark was like, directly resposible or just be accused of aiding a Lannister in general (the latter I guess)
yeah that's why I usually never look at this thread.
― dmr, Monday, 8 April 2013 17:52 (eleven years ago) link
it wasn't totally clear, but roose bolton specifically refers to karstark's sons between the mention of the 200 and the bit about their killer running free
― Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 8 April 2013 17:56 (eleven years ago) link
If it's an actual spoiler then it should be deleted.
― polyphonic, Monday, 8 April 2013 18:00 (eleven years ago) link

Ugh. Paul Kaye looking similar to his character in the UK bookie adverts seems bad casting atm.
― kraudive, Tuesday, 9 April 2013 00:36 (eleven years ago) link
This episode was kind of just 45mins of people walking around various territories but I really enjoyed it. The Jaime and Brienne scenes were great in particular.
I like the Margaery/Cersei/Joffrey storyline is going. Also yay for Diana Rigg.
Can someone either get Sansa out of there or just kill her because I'm bored of watching her idiot doormat face mooning round King's Landing to no effect.
― Matt DC, Tuesday, 9 April 2013 12:29 (eleven years ago) link
Haha Sansa is finally coming across the way she does in the books for Matt
― relentless technosexuality (DJP), Tuesday, 9 April 2013 12:33 (eleven years ago) link
Aw, I like Sansa.
― The last of the famous international Greyjoys (Nicole), Tuesday, 9 April 2013 12:35 (eleven years ago) link
Most of the Stark children bar Arya are pretty dull (although Bran might get interesting now he had magic animal powers) but Sansa is just SO STUPID.
― Matt DC, Tuesday, 9 April 2013 12:43 (eleven years ago) link
Yeah, I've never really given two hoots for Sansa. She wasn't particularly sympathetic in the first season, but I've still not warmed to her.
Funny how this episode was largely about regular characters having uneasy encounters with strangers during their travels. Three times in one episode this happened.
― DavidM, Tuesday, 9 April 2013 12:59 (eleven years ago) link
Sansa on the show is way more relatable/likable than Sansa in the books IMO; it is true though that Arya and Bran are the most interesting Stark children
― relentless technosexuality (DJP), Tuesday, 9 April 2013 13:08 (eleven years ago) link
i actually have found the reverse. GRRM sets you up to dislike sansa but then flips that on you and makes her v sympathetic, in a way that is not coming across in the show for i would say 2 reasons, one that the show has to move on too quickly from the horrible shit she goes thru whereas the books can linger, and two she is the second worse actor in the regular crew after alfie/theon. she doesn't seem desperate, just vapid.
― Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 9 April 2013 13:20 (eleven years ago) link
I think she is actually a very good actor who has the misfortune of being surrounded by a bunch of really excellent actors and a dude with a super easy part to play
Also Sansa in the books was totally vapid when not being desperate, come on
― relentless technosexuality (DJP), Tuesday, 9 April 2013 13:31 (eleven years ago) link
I think Alfie Allen is pretty good as Theon actually, I've no idea what he's supposed to be like in the books but if he's meant to be a self-absorbed idiot who is way way way out of his depth then that's good casting.
― Matt DC, Tuesday, 9 April 2013 13:38 (eleven years ago) link
Pretty much
― relentless technosexuality (DJP), Tuesday, 9 April 2013 13:40 (eleven years ago) link
Yeah I'd say that that's bang on Theon's character really
― Windsor Davies, Tuesday, 9 April 2013 13:42 (eleven years ago) link

paul kaye is basically unemployable as far as the uk audience goes - i'm sure he's probably right for the role but he is always just paul kaye and nothing else

lol @ worst indie band ever, that is the best way to describe that story arc

i had no idea about paul kaye casting so that was a big wtf moment for me but i actually thought he was very good in what seems to a fun role standing in for 2 or 3 book characters.

took me a bit to figure out where i recognized Bolton's scout (dude on the horse in the last scene) from.Noah Taylor, the guy who played hitler in Max. if he's going to be a reoccurring character i will probably not be able to stop thinking of him as a scraggly hitler with a beard.
