remember how we were talking about watching the show in chronological order? someone's gone and done it, starting with day 1 on the island to the day the O6 leave, minus flashbacks. O_O I don't have the hard drive space or the time to watch this right now (and not even sure if i really want to either) but i thought some of you might be interested.

Disco/Very (Roz), Sunday, 8 February 2009 18:20 (fifteen years ago) link

Wow, that's both insane and great!

Though just like you I will never have the time to watch it all.

Le Bateau Ivre, Sunday, 8 February 2009 19:27 (fifteen years ago) link

What is the point of watching them in chronological order? The show is based on these constant audience flashback reveals, it seems like it'd just be a very boring melodrama out of that context.

Nhex, Sunday, 8 February 2009 19:39 (fifteen years ago) link

wonder if the scene of sawyer seeing claire give birth is done twice.

special guest stars mark bronson, Sunday, 8 February 2009 19:58 (fifteen years ago) link

eh some people like melodrama. and since it's focused on on-island action, there'd actually be a little less melodrama because they're moving and doing stuff all the time (exception being the sawyer-kate-jack cage nonsense) - it would probably make less sense though since it won't be clear what the characters' motivations are. but it would be interesting to work out what subplots tended to get more focus, which ones were introduced and then dropped, etc.

not from the link above but this is still my favourite vid of the original crash in chronological order:

Disco/Very (Roz), Sunday, 8 February 2009 20:14 (fifteen years ago) link

the idea is pretty stoopid. instead of cutting from *intense moment + whooshing noise* to a flashback, it'll go to whateverthefuck. fail.

special guest stars mark bronson, Sunday, 8 February 2009 20:22 (fifteen years ago) link

Seems pointless to even try until the entire series has played out.

President Keyes, Sunday, 8 February 2009 22:15 (fifteen years ago) link

I mean at this point a chronological on island video would have to start with the flaming arrows scene--but who knows when we'll be three weeks from now?

President Keyes, Sunday, 8 February 2009 22:18 (fifteen years ago) link

well duh they're clearly playing that one close to the vest... im sure it'll be revealed

O Supermanchiros (blueski), Monday, 9 February 2009 12:44 (fifteen years ago) link

there have been much, much worse eps than this, but it lacked a resolution or strong thread, i guess.

special guest stars mark bronson, Monday, 9 February 2009 12:45 (fifteen years ago) link

The Kate and Aaron stuff just makes me cringe, I wish they'd got a child with a less annoying voice. Weirdly I'm looking forward to the Jack episode this time round, looks like some dark shit went down between Locke's visit and "we have to go back" that we still haven't seen yet. There's still something of the Sayid/Ben story that's yet to be told as well.

I can't quite work out why no one is bothering to actually look for Claire though. You'd think Sawyer at least would mention it, seeing as he thinks everyone else is dead.

Maximo Park Ji-Sung (Matt DC), Monday, 9 February 2009 13:00 (fifteen years ago) link

to be fair they're all kinda busy being time-tossed to organise Claire search party. and they probably think Aaron died on the freighter (unless Locke has told them all what Alpert told him).

i speed-watched a few episodes from last season and drew an important conclusion - no woman has ever looked finer than Naomi in her scenes prior to reaching the island

O Supermanchiros (blueski), Monday, 9 February 2009 13:06 (fifteen years ago) link

otm.

it's not a big deal, but the off-island stuff is a bit confusing. i can't remember when kate's court case was. or when she was living with jack. and if we do get stuff filling in what happened between sayid and ben, that'll be hard to fit in too.

getting to 'last year at marienbad' levels of complex tbh, only better.

special guest stars mark bronson, Monday, 9 February 2009 13:38 (fifteen years ago) link

Getting off the Island -> Kate's court case -> Kate & Jack domestic bliss -> Kate & Jack sneaking around and distrust and strife -> some bad shit we haven't seen yet -> "we have to go back" -> S5 stuff.

I think.

Maximo Park Ji-Sung (Matt DC), Monday, 9 February 2009 13:45 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah it's easy to forget that Locke and co. are still in 2005 while the O6 are now in late 2008 right?

O Supermanchiros (blueski), Monday, 9 February 2009 13:57 (fifteen years ago) link

well, strictly, they aren't in 2005!

special guest stars mark bronson, Monday, 9 February 2009 13:58 (fifteen years ago) link

True. I suppose the whole time jumping thing is one of the only ways they could have reconciled the on/off island timelines without showing us Sawyer, Juliet and Locke hanging around on the island for three years. They might not ever actually live through 2006 and 2007. Either that or the 06 will return to 2005 island time.

Maximo Park Ji-Sung (Matt DC), Monday, 9 February 2009 14:02 (fifteen years ago) link

iirc they haven't explained why they "have to go back" yet, but it seems to have been prompted by locke's death. and that's c. 2007. (why did ben not want to go back before then?)

but i do think that when they return, it will be to 2005.

special guest stars mark bronson, Monday, 9 February 2009 14:11 (fifteen years ago) link

i can see time just becoming less and less important in that when they do return to the island neither they nor we will really know when they are anymore (or where on Earth the island actually is). the snowglobe thing basically.

O Supermanchiros (blueski), Monday, 9 February 2009 14:16 (fifteen years ago) link

and Locke will become the smokemonster

O Supermanchiros (blueski), Monday, 9 February 2009 14:17 (fifteen years ago) link

i like miles/faraday/and especially charlotte, and in a fight between that crew and ben, i'd kind of side with team widmore.

but that's how this has to go down, right?

nobody really hates hen fap (special guest stars mark bronson), Monday, 9 February 2009 14:28 (fifteen years ago) link

Not sure it will go down like that though - although Widmore's funding them and put them there I think their scientific objectives don't necessarily chime with whatever Widmore's shadowy aim is. And they've sort of broken with him in helping people get off the island in the first place.

i'm just saying it's clearly a thing that's being teased and not that it's been forgotten about.

s1ocki, Monday, 9 February 2009 16:17 (fifteen years ago) link

right but what i meant was it's gonna be hard convincing me that Locke having to die will make enough sense, the way things are going. i didn't mean they should've made it clearer how this will happen already.

so yeah, bring back pre-island Naomi

O Supermanchiros (blueski), Monday, 9 February 2009 16:21 (fifteen years ago) link

i feel like there is the possibility of a good explanation.

s1ocki, Monday, 9 February 2009 16:22 (fifteen years ago) link

like, locke could go up to them and be like, "if you don't go back to the island everyone's going to be like this" and then he dies.

It would be a great reveal if we got to see the Losties run into Locke back when he was Dharma's resident Jim Croce wannabe.

Disco/Very (Roz), Monday, 9 February 2009 17:13 (fifteen years ago) link

find it weird that locke's talking about bringing the 06 back and sawyer's all sadface when to them the 06 have only been gone for what.. two days? although i also feel sorry that they're not getting any food or sleep through all the timejumping.

Disco/Very (Roz), Monday, 9 February 2009 17:17 (fifteen years ago) link

He's sadface because he thinks they've been blown up surely?

Maximo Park Ji-Sung (Matt DC), Monday, 9 February 2009 17:25 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah but locke told him afterwards that they're fine so... i guess he's sadface about kate leaving.

Disco/Very (Roz), Monday, 9 February 2009 17:27 (fifteen years ago) link

I took a simpler interpretation, he was sad because he knew that since she chose leaving the island over staying with him (as she went over and over again during season 3) and that bringing her back is most certainly not what she wanted...

i feel like there is the possibility of a good explanation.

like, locke could go up to them and be like, "if you don't go back to the island everyone's going to be like this" and then he dies.

I am really anticipating this moment, like it's going to be incredibly nonsensical, awkward and melodramatic, since he'll probably look like hell and at the same time completely fail to convince all of them but Jack to come back - this season only happens because of Jack's guilt after Locke dies. Well, IF he died... Ben's non-answers are the best.

Nhex, Monday, 9 February 2009 18:04 (fifteen years ago) link

since she chose leaving the island over staying with him

not exactly as he was originally on the chopper when they left - more like he chose improving her chances of getting off the island rather than his own

O Supermanchiros (blueski), Monday, 9 February 2009 18:07 (fifteen years ago) link

Anyone else see the billboards that went up before the s5 premiere? They said "We all know Locke's dead, right?"

Not the real Village People, Monday, 9 February 2009 19:28 (fifteen years ago) link

I haven't read much of yall's discussion since the last episode but I do have to say

-thank god the oceanic 6 are almost all together now - maybe they will be ready to get off by the next episode
-jin, we all knew he was going to live
-faraday, miles, charlotte - they are still cool this season.. especially faraday since we see so much of him

last episode was pretty good because I think it exhilarated things - the time limit that Ben has to get people back to the island is great writing :)

CaptainLorax, Monday, 9 February 2009 20:36 (fifteen years ago) link

Wasn't there a whole thing in Season 4 where Sawyer didn't want to leave the island, that's why he went with Locke essentially, and tried to convince Kate to stay with him in New Otherton instead of going for the freighter people? Or am I confusing events...

Nhex, Monday, 9 February 2009 20:41 (fifteen years ago) link

Did we talk about this already in the skipped posts?...Did Widmore fund Daniel's time travel research because he remembered him from the island 50 years ago?

GLEEPGLOP BLOOPBLORP (nickalicious), Monday, 9 February 2009 21:01 (fifteen years ago) link

i mentioned it upthread - basically it's not that clear whether Widmore would remember him or not. They met only briefly and Dan never told the Others his, Miles or Charlotte's names so don't know whether it was coincidence or because Widmore knew who he was already.

Disco/Very (Roz), Monday, 9 February 2009 21:06 (fifteen years ago) link

so my mom just asked me "what's this Lost show you keep mentioning?"

I sent her Hurley's summary from S5E2, which really needs to be C&Pd here:

HURLEY: We lied, Ma!

CARMEN: What do you mean you lied?

HURLEY: (Voice cracking) All of us--the Oceanic Six, we lied about what happened after the crash.

CARMEN: And what did happen?

HURLEY: Okay. See, we did crash, but it was on this crazy island. And we waited for rescue, and there wasn't any rescue. And there was a smoke monster, and then there were other people on the island. We called them the Others, and they started attacking us. And we found some hatches, and there was a button you had to push every 108 minutes or... well, I was never really clear on that. But... the Others didn't have anything to do with the hatches. That was the DHARMA Initiative. The Others killed them, and now they're trying to kill us. And then we teamed up with the Others because some worse people were coming on a freighter. Desmond's girlfriend's father sent them to kill us. So we stole their helicopter and we flew it to their freighter, but it blew up. And we couldn't go back to the island because it disappeared, so then we crashed into the ocean, and we floated there for a while until a boat came and picked us up. And by then, there were six of us. That part was true. (Whispers) But the re...

(Hurley's voice breaks. He takes a second to regain composure.)

HURLEY: But the rest of the people... who were on the plane? They're still on that island.

(Carmen puts her hand on her son's wrist.)

CARMEN: I believe you. I don't understand you, but I believe you.

HURLEY: A lot of people died, ma. And now this bad stuff is happening because... well, um... (sighs) we shouldn't have lied. (sighs)

I heard someone say that Hurley's mom made a face when he mentioned the DHARMA Initiative, like maybe she'd heard of it--or that was where Cheech really went off to years ago.

ugh, I had a LOST dream last night. Anyway, according to my dream, the key to returning to the island is some kind of time-traveling haunted houseboat. Also, in the future Sayid becomes an overweight kids soccer coach. I also vaguely remember some kind of musical montage set to Oasis's Don't Look Back In Anger.

as in a soccer coach for overweight kids? or he becomes very overweight and then coaches kids' soccer?
