Hurley never has sex="the island didn't want it to happen"

Desmond can't find a good clothes shop
Surely the point of the time jumping is it enables both the Losties and us to see first hand some of the weird stuff that's happened in the history of the island, not so that Sawyer can bump into his past self and get involved in all sorts of Back To The Future shit? Dunno, the latter option seems more of a cop-out. If any survivor is getting involved in the affairs of past survivors then it's probably ghostly apparition Walt.
^^ otm, ppl are way overthinking the time travel thing. dont get why the writers would be looking to make anything MORE complicated at this point with sawyer becoming a horse and giving old john locke advice while being shot at from a boat or whatever.
― max, Friday, 6 February 2009 16:37 (fifteen years ago) link
actually matt, we've gotten future boat time, and early others time, and rousseau crash time, so the time blips seem to be mostly linked to pivotal events on the island (which of course is how you get the plot to work, if it was just random this show would take a long time to finish) and i assume that will be attributed to the will of the island.

I like this!! Maybe the O6 will end up taking Walt to the island (Ben will be all "Oh BTW, I didn't mention this until the very last second, but we also need to find Walt and Desmond. Penny would be nice too, so I can kill her") and then Walt will go and do the spooky things he did in the first few seasons because Locke told him that's what must happen. He did tell Hurley Bentham visited him too, right? Maybe off-island Walt will already know (from Bentham) he has to go back too, and will transport himself all crazily over to the harbour where Ben and the others are in the next episode.

Lost seems to rely very heavily on causal loops, where things happened the way they happened precisely because time travel exists.
eg daniel telling them to bury the bomb so that the island will continue to exist in 50 years where daniel will arrive and travel back in time to tell them to bury the bomb so that... etc.
or alpert giving the compass to locke who gives it to alpert who gives it locke and so on...
so yeah if Taller Walt goes back in time to give advice to 2004 Locke, it's because Walt already knows this was how it was supposed to happen.
nu-Doctor Who loves this shit as well and i can see why - it's basically the only way to do time travel on tv without getting into multiple pasts/futures territory (Heroes tried this and basically the plot just fell apart because it got way too confusing).

― O Supermanchiros (blueski), Friday, 6 February 2009 17:01 (fifteen years ago) link
That nuclear bomb thing was so stupid. Unless the series ends with it blowing up the entire island up forever.
― Holy Suffering Gobi Desert Clit Nun (Matt DC), Friday, 6 February 2009 17:01 (fifteen years ago) link
although the bomb could explain a bunch of the weird electro-mag and radiation shit that keeps happening in all the underground hatches.
― born of nililism and iconoclasm (John Justen), Friday, 6 February 2009 17:03 (fifteen years ago) link
i'm pretty sure the bomb is going to resurface. seems so stupid to introduce it (going so far as to name the episode after it) and not do anything with it. it wasn't even really presented as a threat in that ep.

Locke/Bentham dies in New York if i recall that newspaper clipping correctly, perhaps just after visiting Walt? i do not see why he has to die tho
― O Supermanchiros (blueski), Friday, 6 February 2009 17:11 (fifteen years ago) link
mmmm, I forgot that Walt was wet in a lot of his scenes. Hmph. He also said "don't push the button, the button is bad" which I don't think Locke would have told him to say.. Opinions? I mean Locke did eventually stop pushing the button, but that set off the chain of events leading to their "rescue," which Locke didn't want. Anyone remember who Walt was appearing to when he warned against the button?
― she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Friday, 6 February 2009 17:12 (fifteen years ago) link
yeah, Shannon mainly. what a waste of the island's time!
― O Supermanchiros (blueski), Friday, 6 February 2009 17:16 (fifteen years ago) link

If the island (or time laws) can exert so much influence, how did it let the O6 leave the island? Since this show is so character-based, I'm guessing it had something to do w/ someone making an unexpected decision-- Sawyer jumping out of the helicopter. Maybe the helicopter was meant to make it to the freighter but not have enough fuel to take off again, thus O6 all die in explosion. Or it was meant to crash in the water within the island's sphere of influence, so that O6 jumped with the island like Jin did.

i don't think Locke's DEAD dead btw. resurrection seems like a theme this season - someone mentioned upthread that the sign on Ben's van was an anagram for reincarnation and in this week's podcast one of them said that the hieroglyphics at the frozen donkey wheel roughly translated to the concepts of resurrection/rebirth. and Ben as usual was being cryptic abt whether Locke was really dead or not when Jack asked him.
― Disco/Very (Roz), Friday, 6 February 2009 17:23 (fifteen years ago) link
i keep thinking back to the final shot of s4 where the camera moves to Locke's face as he lies there in the coffin and keep wishing he'd suddenly opened his eyes and said "th-th-that's all folks"
― O Supermanchiros (blueski), Friday, 6 February 2009 17:32 (fifteen years ago) link
Keyes - i think you're on the right track. The time travel rules seemed to be a bit more flexible in season 3 when Ms Hawking explained it to Desmond:
1. You can't change fate. 2. You can't change fate but you can change the details (eg Charlie could've died much earlier but it was possible for Des to keep on saving him until the point where he couldn't be saved anymore. so they do have some free will but not much).
I think the O6 leaving is equivalent of changing a very big detail - remember how Jack got appendicitis and Rose thought that it happened because the island didn't want Jack to leave. but they left anyway so the universe will keep on course-correcting: none of them can be happy until they all make the choice to go back.

even if "the Island" is revealed as a proxy for "the show writers" or any meta-stuff like that? They were getting pretty close to that with "the Island won't let you die, MIchael" i.e. "us, the writers, have other plans for this character muahahahhah"
Hey actually the Island's powers and Walt's powers are kind of similar. Maybe they are actually antagonists and there will be a Walt/Island showdown? Where the Island = the writers and Walt = studio execs?

I bet we'll get to see Walt in Locke's off-island adventure episode but fear that will be the end of his story on LOST entirely.

It might be something to do with the fact that he can't walk in the real world and has been a tad energetic on the island.

Seriously, did Rose and Bernard just go for a hike or something?
― Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Friday, 6 February 2009 21:41 (fifteen years ago) link
Rewatching the episode, I realized that when they get back to the camp they're in the future, and those canoes are there, so it can be assumed Rose/Bernard/etc took off to get away from the canoe people (perhaps they never saw the canoe people, just flashed to a time in which the canoes were on the island, and took the zodiac to get away?) and/or something that happened to them in a previous flash :| I still don't remember seeing the two groups actually part ways though, what led Sawyer etc away from the beach?
― she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Friday, 6 February 2009 22:06 (fifteen years ago) link
Rose and Bernard will turn up perfectly unharmed for five minutes in the penultimate episode of the season, I wouldn't worry about it.
― Maximo Park Ji-Sung (Matt DC), Friday, 6 February 2009 23:02 (fifteen years ago) link
They're probably off doing a play.
― President Keyes, Friday, 6 February 2009 23:27 (fifteen years ago) link
I would imagine Rose and Bernard have been jumping through the exact same time periods as Locke, Sawyer & co, although they've been separated so they're wandering around elsewhere. They may have been at the camp area when everyone flashed to the post-camp-and-canoe time, but I doubt the zodiac was still there by that point.
Does anyone not think that Jin has been experiencing the same time flashes but has been floating on a door or whatever out in the ocean the whole time? I'd imagine he rowed partway to the island between flashes and eventually passed out.

I'm wondering whether Jin was blown clear of the freighter or just magically survived the whole thing exploding in a big ball of fire.

Call me cold hearted, but I kinda hope that Rose & Bernard have been sucked into some black hole vacuum & remain there for the rest of the series.
