how the fuk did doc build the time train at the end of b2tf3??? this has been bothering me

Question: Take the last scene in last week's episode.. - lol this phrasing prompted me to imagine your post being read aloud by Dwight Schrute.

Thank U Pillboxx for the link, signed happy Lost fans in 3rd world country. - no problem! happy to help lost Lost fans.

Im starting to think Ben is an idiot. - Dunno about this. I agree that it was kind of o_O stupid not to bring Jack with him when trying to recruit Hurley. But then again, Ben just revealed he has connections who can guarantee Hurley's release, thus delivering him to a united front of the O6 (cause you know Kate & Sun will be on board by next week) at precisely the right time. Same thing with Kate & the lawyer thing: Ben's gift seems to be in anticipating others' (Others?) behavioral patterns by several steps, as if he were playing psychological chess with everyone through the power of suggestion. Thus, knowing how Kate would react to being served papers, and that Sun and Claire's mom would be in town, along with Jack etc. to facilitate the process, he was able to place her right where he wanted her, alongside the rest of the group. I agree that all this is far-fetched, but this is Lost fer chrissakes.

One thing that's bothered me since last season: Maybe this has been resolved, and I'm just not recalling it. Daniel & Charlotte's original Widmore-issued island mission (or one of them at least) was to shut down that reactor thingamajig to prevent Ben from killing everyone on the island, which they were only able to do at the zero hour (naturally). If Ben had succeeded in killing everyone except, presumably, himself (and perhaps the Others at the temple), and the Losties & Freighties know this, they certainly haven't talked about it much, and have said nary a word to Ben about it, while (meanwhile) Widmore/Keamy have been cast as Satan incarnate for basically trying to do the same thing.

ben has done shitty things to them time and time again and the lostites still persist in trusting him when shit goes down because like he said so himself, he figures out what their weaknesses are and exploits them.

wouldn't he remember her too? eg them all talking about rousseau could be enough?

he did remember her. the last scene of the ep was her telling him her name and jin looking all wtf.

Disco/Very (Roz), Thursday, 5 February 2009 16:29 (fifteen years ago) link

lostites, er = losties heh.

Disco/Very (Roz), Thursday, 5 February 2009 16:30 (fifteen years ago) link

no I mean given that this is in the past....their first meeting. wouldn't he have remembered her as soon as the losties mentioned a French woman?

Local Garda, Thursday, 5 February 2009 16:34 (fifteen years ago) link

i'm so confused

Local Garda, Thursday, 5 February 2009 16:34 (fifteen years ago) link

that's not how it works. he first meets her in 2004. he meets her the second time in 1988. 1988 is in her past but his future (i swear i've had this conversation in the doctor who thread heh).

Disco/Very (Roz), Thursday, 5 February 2009 16:38 (fifteen years ago) link

okay makes sense...kind of. what if he killed her in 1988?

Local Garda, Thursday, 5 February 2009 16:46 (fifteen years ago) link

He wouldn't be able to, because we know she was alive until 2004.

Bianca Jagger (jaymc), Thursday, 5 February 2009 16:47 (fifteen years ago) link

he could try but he can't. island won't let it happen.

Disco/Very (Roz), Thursday, 5 February 2009 16:48 (fifteen years ago) link

Do the O6 want to go back because they need to go back, or do they want to go back because Ben is orchestrating things to make them want to go back?

Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Thursday, 5 February 2009 17:29 (fifteen years ago) link

man i hope this is one of the few boooooooooring lets put the pieces in place episodes this season. esp frustrating because some of the aha moments were just so dumbed down or misplaced (so yeah jin is alive but instead you build suspense to the appearance of rousseau, which 90% of us guessed when you showed us canisters on the beach with french on them like 15 minutes ago?) and the just plain useless and yawnworthy half the episode wasted on following the lawyer around for the big unsuprising ben reveal.

this episode sucked.

born of nililism and iconoclasm (John Justen), Thursday, 5 February 2009 17:36 (fifteen years ago) link

So nice to see Jin back. My boyfriend and I high fived!

I hoped we were about to see Rousseau as soon as Locke asked if anyone spoke French... it's about time, I hope that this flash lasts long enough to give us some insight as to their story! Also, young Rosseau is so pretty! I totally agree that 16 years of boar meat could make Mira Furlan, who is still pretty in an emaciated and hair conditionerless sort of way.

Definitely a setup episode for some good stuff. I wonder how Locke or Ben will prove that Jin is alive to convince Sun to get back (not based on spoilers/previews but it's obvious, right?)

Anything involving Kate pretty much makes me eyeroll: Sawyer crying (though it was cool to see the "good old days"/birth of Aaron scene, that didn't get shown originally.. did it?) and Kate "always there for" Jack. BARF.

i am finding the O6 stuff OK altho this was pushing it. Sun gets such crap dialogue.

agree about the 'constants' idea being overplayed, think i would prefer this to not apply to so many people (or indeed anyone other than Desmond long-term).

the problem with the time jumps is how convenient they are. Jin could be sent anytime but no not only the same year as Danielle's arrival. obv no point using the concept otherwise but it's pushing it too close to credibility limit the more people they draw into it...unless the writers just say all the points people jump to are controlled and decided by the island (i'm OK with this tho ha).

O Supermanchiros (blueski), Thursday, 5 February 2009 17:42 (fifteen years ago) link

but no not only the same year as Danielle's arrival.

meant to add but same location too

also yeah Rousseau doesn't look right for me. which one of them is meant to be Alex's Dad (assuming he was part of the voyage)?

Local Garda, Thursday, 5 February 2009 17:50 (fifteen years ago) link

I wonder if the jumps have something to do with the various "windows" of time that allow the island to be briefly glimpsed? just throwing that out there but yeah, super convenient there. loved jin's "rousseau, wtf?" face - I'd forgotten that he wouldn't realize he's time travelling.

I thought Sun was going to kidnap Aaron, she is so spooky off island!

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Thursday, 5 February 2009 17:53 (fifteen years ago) link

unless the writers just say all the points people jump to are controlled and decided by the island (i'm OK with this tho ha).

I think this is gonna be the ultimate explanation actually - if Daniel had not jumped to that exact point in 1954 and told Ellie how to disarm the bomb, the island would've probably blown up.

Disco/Very (Roz), Thursday, 5 February 2009 17:55 (fifteen years ago) link

as long as they explain the reasons for stuff beyond "you had to go back in time to introduce your parents to each other who had to give birth to you so you could go back in time and introduce your parents to each other"

O Supermanchiros (blueski), Thursday, 5 February 2009 17:56 (fifteen years ago) link

"and then the Others will send back a Terminator to kill you."

Disco/Very (Roz), Thursday, 5 February 2009 18:01 (fifteen years ago) link

so yeah I figured he couldn't kill her cos the island wouldn't let him. kinda weird tho, like I remember with Michael and stuff I kept trying to think of elaborate ways for him to try and die to see how the island would stop him. eg how does the island "keep him alive" on the mainland. the word "fate" seems to have to be involved here.

Local Garda, Thursday, 5 February 2009 18:05 (fifteen years ago) link

I was pleased that one of Rousseau's crew was named Montand. I hope to find out how he lost his arm.

Bianca Jagger (jaymc), Thursday, 5 February 2009 18:20 (fifteen years ago) link

I hope there was a good reason they held back on giving us Rousseau's backstory for 5 years.

President Keyes, Thursday, 5 February 2009 18:26 (fifteen years ago) link

because she was really just a background character?

O Supermanchiros (blueski), Thursday, 5 February 2009 18:31 (fifteen years ago) link

it would still be awesome to see her first encounter with Ben tho (and also the smokemonster obv)

O Supermanchiros (blueski), Thursday, 5 February 2009 18:32 (fifteen years ago) link

because she was really just a background character?

It seems weird to me that some people on the island are incredibly crucial and spiritually aligned with the island, and others are just expendable chum. Danielle seems like she would have been on the island long enough to have experienced it jump at least once? Or to have some advanced ideas about the smoke monster, or etc.

Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Thursday, 5 February 2009 18:37 (fifteen years ago) link

x-post They gave us 2 or 3 flashback episodes for the glorified redshirts Boone & Shannon.

President Keyes, Thursday, 5 February 2009 18:37 (fifteen years ago) link

i really didn't like how they killed Danielle off but otoh the coldness of it was exhilirating (ditto for Alex...don't give a toss about Carl ha ha)

O Supermanchiros (blueski), Thursday, 5 February 2009 18:38 (fifteen years ago) link

Not to mention a fucking Nikki & Paolo episode.

President Keyes, Thursday, 5 February 2009 18:39 (fifteen years ago) link

but those are characters who are able to relate more directly with the main characters. Rousseau has always been v isolated which makes her backstory harder to explore and fit in with other people without just going off on a complete tangent for an entire episode (would've been cool with this if it means more island history but i can see why the writers would be reluctant to do this).

O Supermanchiros (blueski), Thursday, 5 February 2009 18:41 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah, I suppose it's more fulfilling to tell us about Jack's tattoos.

President Keyes, Thursday, 5 February 2009 18:44 (fifteen years ago) link

jack had an intense experience ok

ice cr?m, Thursday, 5 February 2009 18:45 (fifteen years ago) link

Danielle seems like she would have been on the island long enough to have experienced it jump at least once?

I wouldn't think so . . . she's been on it since 1988, Dharma purge was in 1992. Nothing on the show would seem to indicate that the island has been moved during that period.

For a little while I wondered if she was going to kill Aaron.

would have been good

Local Garda, Thursday, 5 February 2009 19:32 (fifteen years ago) link

Why did she bring Aaron with her to kill Ben or whatever? She's a billionairess--I'm sure she could have put him in some kind daycare.

President Keyes, Thursday, 5 February 2009 19:37 (fifteen years ago) link

kind OF daycare-- though hopefully it would be kind too.

President Keyes, Thursday, 5 February 2009 19:38 (fifteen years ago) link

Maybe she didn't have time to search for a daycare with an interesting anagram, hatch-style paintings of planes or an address with one of "the numbers." Pity.

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Thursday, 5 February 2009 19:49 (fifteen years ago) link

also no one has really mentioned.. Rose? Bernard? I can't remember exactly what happened. They were all together at the camp, ran away when the flaming arrow people appeared and then I can't remember what happened.. Was there a scene where we saw Juliet, Sawyer & all break away from the beach camp people, what happened there?

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Thursday, 5 February 2009 20:22 (fifteen years ago) link

I would love to see Ben seeing Jin while kidnapping Alex from Rousseau, but I suspect the island won't stay/won't let the losties stay in that time period long enough before a flash. Imagine, though: somehow Ben sees Jin & knows he lives, but Locke DOESN'T see Jin and thus tells Sun Ben essentially killed him.

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Thursday, 5 February 2009 20:33 (fifteen years ago) link

That's true--if Locke/Bentham spoke to Sun & she still thinks Jin is dead then Locke must not see Jin before he turns the d.wheel again.

President Keyes, Thursday, 5 February 2009 20:39 (fifteen years ago) link

maybe in the next episode he'll whip out a photo scrapbook of Jin, Rousseau and baby Alex chilling and eating sushi to convince Sun she should go back

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Thursday, 5 February 2009 20:41 (fifteen years ago) link

I'm quite looking forward to seeing all those French dudes getting capped in the next episode. I'm wondering whether it's Smokey, or whether they end up at the sharp end of the Dharma purge (is this the right time?)

The time jumps are a brilliant device for filling in bits of island backstory but the future, and the dudes in the boats, intrigued me even more. More Widmore lackeys, do we think?

The sooner they get the O6 back to the Island, or hanging out with Crazy Time Lady, the better. The only things I care about there are whatever happened between Ben and Sayid, and whatever the secrets of Sun's father's company are. The rest of it = bothered.

They're going to run into Des and Penny at some point soon as well, surely.

That said, the bit when Sawyer stumbled across Kate and Claire in the jungle was genuinely moving.

Holy Suffering Gobi Desert Clit Nun (Matt DC), Thursday, 5 February 2009 21:03 (fifteen years ago) link

i thought danielle said the french dudes all died b/c of some unnamed disease?

btw danielles inability to later recognize jin (as well as her seeming lack of knowledge abt time jumps etc) could be pretty easily explained by writers as "she went crazy" which is basically how they played her the whole series--as a nutcase
