Overrated. Coraline is better IMO.

I thought the plot of ParaNorman was pretty much the weakest part, the 'twist' was pretty clear from early on once you start treating it as the Tim Burton film it clearly is.
― Andrew Farrell, Thursday, 10 January 2013 19:44 (eleven years ago) link
well I guess it wasn't the plotting per se that impressed me as the themes the plot touched on, especially the parallel drawn between Norman's issues and mental illness/LD.

also I went in sort of expecting the movie to be lots of wandering around talking to theme-park ghosts of various flavors (civil war, sad teen, amelia earhart) so that it had a much more interesting story to tell (not just a zany adventure w/ ghosts) was pleasing to me

One more random note: Ghost in the Shell is probably the only anime in which I don't feel weird/slumming settling with the English dub (possibly because this is one of the first animes I ever watched).
― sunn o))) dude (Leee), Friday, 11 January 2013 05:34 (eleven years ago) link
Should probably watch Coraline and, apparently, ParaNorman. Roger Rabbit I'm guessing remains great fun. Toy Story the weakest of the franchise - Sid is an actively uncompelling villain - and most of its charm comes from the fact that it's your introduction to all of the frankly wonderful characters, not least the claw game aliens <3 <3 <3

Anime is one thing I quite like watching dubbed, subtitles can distract from the pretty pictures a bit.

i'm the complete opposite, mainly due to how poor the dubs are though

― trey songza (some dude), Friday, 11 January 2013 17:27 (eleven years ago) link
Actually I'd expect Corpse Bride and Beauty and the Beast to place by now, probably something more leftfield like Antz or Cowboy Bebop. Would be surprised to see Team America in top 10, but more so not making top 100.

Snow White was #33. Not sure if 'Team America' was nominated now. Just realised that #1 is going to be 'Iron Giant'. 'Triplets of Belleville' must have a shout at the top 10 too.

some unsurprising recency bias in these results, at least when looking at rank order.

Actually #14 #12 and #11 are all films I expected to see in the top 10!
I actually think Toy Story 2 might be the fourth-placed Pixar film, which is really fucked up.
Totoro, Spirited Away, Akira to come surely.
Aladdin & Beauty and the Beast are the remaining Disney princesses, I have no reading on the whole genre, so I don't know if it'd be more of a travesty to appear this much higher than the others, or not at all.
Iron Giant maybe, Belleville certainly not.
Aaand a few shorts? I will speculate What's Opera Doc? and Duck Amuck, because that's what I voted for.
Write in vote for Bully For Bugs at #1 :)

Paprika is a visual feast, but plotwise I think it's Kon's weakest movie by a good margin. The story and dialogue feel pedantic and under-developed, so it feels too much like a "typical" anime movie.
Everything since 20 has been great

Paprika is based on a novel - unfortunately it isn't all that good plot- and character-wise either

That does look pretty cool!
I know I've seen Millenium Actress, but up until seeing it in the countdown here I had no memory of doing so, and it remains a very faint and hazy sense of deja vu. When did I see it? Why? What was it about? I have only the faintest notions. There's something kind of off-putting, to me, about Kon's (or Studio Madhouse's?) animation style... the character designs have this sort of wooden, distant quality. It's maybe an intentional effect, fitting the themes of the story, or maybe they're going for realism and my eyes, accustomed to very stylized anime, don't really process it as such?
