X1-3 have always felt about the same, quality-wise, to me. I actually like First Class the least.

i havent seen X2 since it came out but i thought it was pretty sick back then.

Yeah, this is otm. The Marvel Studios movies have done a great job of putting a lot of the fun stuff from the comics on-screen and creating a sense of a shared universe. The X-Men movies, on the other hand, have seemed increasingly like box-ticking exercises to ensure the movie rights didn't revert back to Marvel.

I did enjoy First Class, mainly for Fassbender and McAvoy's performances, but the idea of a flashback movie must surely have come because they had painted themselves into a stupid corner at the end of X3 and couldn't think of an alternative. I have similar reservations about the thinking behind bringing back McKellen and Stewart.

I liked the first two fine but I always kind of tried too hard to like them because that was as good as it got at the time. Glad that Marvel is finally putting out movies that I enjoy unreservedly (Lee's Hulk was stylistically annoying, and I never got what people saw in the Spider-flicks).

xp Haha, I'd never thought of it like that before but you're right. It certainly has all the Mantlo hallmarks of being hastily hashed-together at the last minute to cover a blown deadline. In fact, wasn't X3 rushed into production to meet a predetermined release date?

yeah. matthew vaughn was the original director of X3 and he bailed because he didnt like the release date, which is how ratner came to fill in for him.

he didn't like the fact that they didn't have a script or finished production design but that the release date meant that shooting started in a week or three, iirc

I was high on pain medication and sleep deprived when I watched X3 so I remember LOVING it. If I watched it now it would probably be terrible, but at the time it was hilarious and entertaining.

Or... they are taking the second-most popular X-Men story and adapting it for the big screen after taking the most popular X-Men story (Dark Phoenix) and adapting it for the big screen

Of course that's what they're doing, DJP - it just seems to me that the fact they needed to quietly reboot with a shift to the sixties instead of just continuing on to do Days of Future Past as a direct sequel to X3 suggests they ran out of narrative steam with the third movie.

X2 seemed really cool at the time, definitely better than the first one and in hindsight leagues ahead of the terrible third one. But they all started to feel hokey and made-for-TV once the general caliber of superhero movies started rising with stuff like Spider-Man 1 and 2.

I liked it so much I remember thinking s1ocki was a jerk for disliking it (I really have no excuse for this other than him being relatively new at the time). Then I watched it on tv a couple of years ago and realized it was pretty meh.

It had a cool plot, more going on in it than the first one by far, some nice shoutouts to bits of continuity that you wouldn't think they'd use, the cool Wolverine/Deathstrike fight, the whole Magneto-recruiting-Pyro thing which was cool...but just overall not compelling. I assume it's better than the Fantastic Four movies (which I've only seen bits of).

Probably wouldn't turn it off if I was home for the holidays and it was on in the afternoon.

i've enjoyed every x movie (even wolverine). the "young kid learns their disability is a virtue" thing always tugs at my heartstrings and super powers are nifty.

granted i'm not sure i've ever seen any of them twice

The first X-Men movie was the point where I had to confront the fact that while I really adore watching her on screen, Halle Berry actually is a horrible actress.

Her line reading was incredibly wooden, even though the line is bad.

I loved the way Halle Berry had a terrible faux-African accent in the first one which she just decided to dispense with altogether for the second and third ones.

Berry's toad line made more sense when I read Whedon explaining that she'd delivered it completely wrong. S'posed to be a snarky, Buffy-esque zinger.

imo thats just whedon passing the buck instead of sacking up and taking responsibility for a terrible line

the way blockbuster action films are made, there are at least a dozen people who should be smacked for that line

I never had the guts to watch the Daredevil or Elektra movies

now, Punisher: War Zone, that is awesome

punisher: war zone is one of the best films of the 21st-century

Yeah, War Zone is a blast. The How Did This Get Made? podcast with the director, still somewhat bemused by her brush with the Hollywood system, is fantastic.

Daredevil was terrible, but it was still better than the F4 movies

I think I saw maybe 20 minutes of each of those films, and they are the worst things
