according to Miles it's taken Widmore 20 years so far to find the island so i guess he defects from Richard who then adopts Ben who then banishes him from the island somehow after the Dharma v Hostile purge (but interested to see how Widmore comes to believe the island is his and why he appears to not respect Richard v much).
― O Supermanchiros (blueski), Saturday, 31 January 2009 15:29 (fifteen years ago) link
I would guess that Widmore believes he should have been chosen as the leader and perhaps Ben engineered his banishment because he called bullshit on Ben's claim of having been born on the island.
― President Keyes, Saturday, 31 January 2009 15:48 (fifteen years ago) link
aw i kind of liked the corny Dan/Charlotte stuff although the "i said it because i meant it" exchange was some tv writer bullshit.
20 years would mean that Widmore was already off the island in the 80s, which is before the Dharma purge. i guess the island could've been moved once in the 80s which might explain how Rousseau and her crew crashed into it.

I don't quite get the "Desmond is the only one immune from time's laws" deal-- in that Daniel was the one who actually changed the past by banging on the Hatch door and telling Desmond about his mom. Does this mean that anyone can change time when they are around Desmond, or just Daniel?
the way Daniel explained it I think any of the other characters could have banged on the hatch and roused Desmond but if it was, say, Kelvin in there it wouldn't have worked
or was it only possible for Daniel to do it because Dan and Desmond had met at Oxford? I dunno
― dmr, Saturday, 31 January 2009 16:21 (fifteen years ago) link
I like the Dan/Charlotte love stuff because1) it's people from the helicopter crew2) we don't get the mushy backstory3) what if she is just a relative?4) Faraday saying "I'm definitely not Romeo"5) It's not Jack/Sawyer/Kate/Juliet (sudden question that came to my mind - does Faraday know Juliet from before? great another possible scenario...)
During casting, Charlotte was described as "a hot twentysomething ... precocious, loquacious and funny... a very successful academic who also knows how to handle herself in the real world". She also has "lots of repressed and pent-up emotions" beneath the surface. The chosen actress, Mader, was told to be a "female version of Indiana Jones"
and according to wiki: it was hard for fans to connect with Charlotte because "she arrived with an apparent mission and then didn't do it" and was disappointed to not get the opportunity to tell Charlotte's backstory during season four.

yeah her role was originally offered to Kristen Bell (who would've been great) but she went off to do Heroes instead.

yeah this was a real "ugh" moment
― WmC, Saturday, 31 January 2009 16:43 (fifteen years ago) link
maybe it's because I don't remember them interacting much or being interested in each other during the last season, that I honestly think (or have a theory) that Dan might only be pretending to love her so that she will have a constant.
― CaptainLorax, Saturday, 31 January 2009 16:51 (fifteen years ago) link
I cant remember him showing much if any interest before
― CaptainLorax, Saturday, 31 January 2009 16:52 (fifteen years ago) link
Charlotte did get worst deal out of the 4 Freightie Characters-- Miles and Frank got minimal back story but enough good lines & scenes to establish themselves. Charlotte was meant to remain ambiguous throughout SSN4. Her main role seemed to be continually telling Daniel not to tell the 815ers anything--which pissed me off. Now she's sick or dying & it's difficult to care, except for the fact that it would upset Daniel, who we like.
― President Keyes, Saturday, 31 January 2009 16:54 (fifteen years ago) link
ehh even Jin and Sun figured out that Dan was in love with her xp
― Disco/Very (Roz), Saturday, 31 January 2009 16:59 (fifteen years ago) link
on the Dan/Charlotte thing...1)he probably just sucks at relationships (he is a mathematician)2)better yet - maybe he knows (or at least thinks) that Charlotte is going to die and has to say how he feels now
xp - yeah I missed all the set up for this love scenario
― CaptainLorax, Saturday, 31 January 2009 17:01 (fifteen years ago) link
Charlotte was really supposed to be the most interesting one in that she knew that the 815 plane they found was a fake, seemed to know about Dharma and prob born on the island but her character really wasn't given a chance to be likeable or relatable in any way.

Has Charlotte definitely been written out? I don't see it myself, seeing as they're running quite low on island characters now.

― Disco/Very (Roz), Saturday, 31 January 2009 17:11 (fifteen years ago) link
the thing about Kristen Bell is that she's cute, but she's also only like 3 feet tall and thus worthless as a human being. You want to have sex with a 10 year old?
― she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Saturday, 31 January 2009 17:49 (fifteen years ago) link
Daniel didn't actually change the past, though. Desmond doesn't remember this meeting until after he leaves the island, which suggests to me that the universe made him forget it the minute after it happened.
― Bianca Jagger (jaymc), Saturday, 31 January 2009 18:08 (fifteen years ago) link
Daniel/Charlotte love stuff is so fucking lame and i am getting sick of his stoned/out-of-breath voice, just speak normally Dan. too many annoying haughty British accents too :(
RONG on all counts. mader is strangely alluring. i think the chopper people are a great addition and wouldn't care overmuch if they killed off jack/kate/sawyer at this moment, not that that's going to happen ever.

x-post
That's not how I read it. Des had never met Daniel at the Hatch. But then Daniel goes back in time & bangs on hatch door. Normally Daniel would not be able to create a scenario that had not happened in the past, but since Des is immune from time laws he can--thus the newly manufactured fact bounces through time and shows up in present day Des' head as a memory.
This is also what happened when Military Des visited Daniel's Oxford lab in The Constant. Daniel had not met Des in the past, but then the meeting changed the past and the note showed up in his notebook.

i wanna know where Richard was when 815 crashed and whether he thought 'oh so THIS is how Locke gets here' (assuming he remembers Locke from '54 onwards). and why he can't just be Others leader himself (maybe his unnatural long-life makes this untenable somehow or his 'powers' need to be controlled in this way - damn Jacob and his red tape).

So have we talked about why Widmore is funding Faraday's research? If the project was to find a way to send one's mind around in time without dying--then perhaps Widmore wants to send his own mind back to a specific point in the past so that he can do something differently.
― President Keyes, Wednesday, 4 February 2009 15:46 (fifteen years ago) link
Presumably he's also funding Charlotte's research and, well, whatever it is Miles is going?
― Holy Suffering Gobi Desert Clit Nun (Matt DC), Wednesday, 4 February 2009 16:00 (fifteen years ago) link
Yeah, it sucks we don't know a lot about what Charlotte's research is. When she found the Dharma Polar Bear skeleton I thought it was a sign that the Dharma organization had been around for thousands of year (sort of like on Millennium when they found the 1000 yr. old body with the Millennium symbol) but now with all the time jumping, it could be that that was a present-ish day bear transported into the past somehow.
