ike's is eh, okay. vastly overrated by yelpers who call sandwiches "sammies." for non-burger sandwiches, go the extra couple of blocks to rhea's deli at Valencia and 19th. deli board as noted above is p good too.

if you really want something simple and non-touristy for burgers, mammoth sandwiches, fries, milkshakes, apple pie and such, you're looking for the Apple Pan on Pico in Los Angeles. but orphan andy's super duper burger, or st. francis fountain could do all right.

i'd vote st. francis. def non-touristy and they serve mitchell's ice cream which is local and for my money still tops the hipster scoops at bi-rite, humphry slocombe, and mr. and mrs. miscellaneous.

"It's Tops" on Market near Octavia has decent diner food and pitch perfect americana decor and staff (sassy waitresses in costume). I'm not a big fan of Sparky's at all. Ike's has good sandwiches but I'd just as soon never go there again since Dinosaurs (granted, it's a banh mi place, not really american sandwiches) is just a block away and is just as good, cheaper and has a much shorter line.

Loved dinosaurs, used to go there all the time

We liked Lori's. Sorry!

At San Jose airport beginning our epic journey home now. Goodbye California!

Yeah It's Tops is good! I think my hungover/drunkenness may have clouded my memory of how good/bad Sparkys food actually is

one month passes...

i took a tour of the privately owned public spaces (well, a selection of them) a little while ago, and it was pretty neat. there are better things to do if you're just in town for a day, but it's fun to see all this stuff that's right under your nose that you never noticed before. here's a link to a handy guide to all of them - the 15th floor terrace at 346 sansome is my favorite. http://www.spur.org/files/popos-guide.pdf

Did not do those things when I was just there. Was in town last week with my gf. Love walking around that Cliff House/ Lands End area along the ocean. Had some good food too, saw a Cajun band at the Chapel in the Mission, did lots of tourist stuff--night-time Alcatraz tour, the nice pedestrian walk up to Coit Tower (and the Tower itself), Japanese Tea Garden, Amoeba Records, City Lights Books and nearby cafes, etc...

Looks it! Intrigued. Want to hear all about it but wouldn't want ppl to be able to google it.
Did you do that Jejune Institute thing a while back?

kinder, Friday, 11 January 2013 16:11 (eleven years ago) link

Probably everyone that would want to know about this show already does, but Rene Hell and Jefre Cantu-Ledesma are playing The Lab tonight. $5-$7 - cheap!

sarahell, Thursday, 17 January 2013 20:32 (eleven years ago) link

I did the first part of the jejeune inst - in Chinatown and environs. We got a little sidetracked at Li Po though.

Canaille help you (Michael White), Thursday, 17 January 2013 20:45 (eleven years ago) link

The only time I went to LiPo was to see a Rudimentary Penii cover band.

I went to a a punk show there ages ago and these (rather petite) girls started pogoing and I had to laugh 'cause had I been inclined to follow suit, I would have knocked myself out.

Canaille help you (Michael White), Thursday, 17 January 2013 21:58 (eleven years ago) link

Would totally be at the lab tonight were I in town.
Ive heard that LiPo hasn't quite been the same since Anthony Bourdain promoted it.

eris bueller (lukas), Thursday, 28 February 2013 19:34 (eleven years ago) link

so yesterday around 4pm about a block away from my office some guy shot on foot shot and seriously injured a passenger in a car - car sped off to the hospital, shooter fled on foot, Market Street was blocked off from Beale to Main for about an hour... can't find anymore news about it today though. sounds really odd - not yr standard spree shooting or robbery, wondering what the deal was.

Donkamole Marvin (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 8 March 2013 17:10 (eleven years ago) link

I think Shakey meant there hadn't been any followup news since yesterday - he's right, I haven't seen anything either.

Uh, well, on the bright side! Back in town tonight, Zeitgeist tomorrow at 4 pm if anyone's free...(I know some people are already planning!)

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 4 April 2013 18:40 (eleven years ago) link

Grants helped to cover the loss of income from the Market, but a lot of the money was wasted. After one of the larger grants was received, the staff were given cell phones (no pun intended) for conducting CELLspace business. Within one year, they would have no business to conduct.

“Essentially, large amounts of money were mismanaged

this is just so sadly familiar. ... I didn't realize that Cellspace was only founded the year I moved back to the Bay Area. I had thought it had been around longer.
