what if when daniel sawyer ginger cowface and whoever else were standing around the blown-up hatch waiting for time change again one of them had climbed down into the crater and then time changed?

Almost creeping into Quantum Leap territory-- "Ziggy says there's a 97% probability you're here to tell the Others how to bury that Hydrogen bomb in concrete before you can jump again"--but still cool.
I literally jumped out of my seat when young Widmore was revealed.
Richard gets mad because Locke doesn't recognize the compass John gives him, continues to test him over and over again to validate the fact that Richard saw Locke disappear before his very eyes & believe he was sent by Jacob which Locke wasn't, really - seems like he is almost managing to engineer his own fate! Telling Alpert he will be his leader in 50 years makes him the leader in 50 years. Love it.
This is key. Locke telling Richard that Jacob sent him, when in actuality it was Christian who told him to move the Island--which caused Ben to be banished. Before I was convinced that Ben was a false leader but that was mostly because of what Richard said to Locke in SSN 3 about people questioning Ben's leadership. Now I think that Richard allowed himself to be misguided by his encounter with Locke in the past. So has Ben really been the rightful leader all along or is it one of the other 815ers/Freighties?
Seeing the Others pre-Mittelos, pre-Dharma seeming to have no idea about time travel is interesting. Makes me think they really were just on some primitive mystical shit & then a bunch of military guys showing up with an H-Bomb forced them to adapt to the new high-tech threats. Notice how they took the weapons and uniforms of the army guys they killed, just as they took over Dharma's facilities?

And why the hell didn't Jacob pick Richard as the leader?
― President Keyes, Thursday, 29 January 2009 13:37 (fifteen years ago) link
Of course I mean "primitive mystical shit" that involves speaking Latin and dividing the world into good & bad people.

I also wanna know why Richard Alpert appears to be american while all the other Others are english.

btw that other who was pointing the gun at faraday was WS09 material. so hot.
― cutty, Thursday, 29 January 2009 13:56 (fifteen years ago) link
god bless the hot Others.
so this makes Widmore roughly twenty plus years older than Ben who was born in the early 60s. You'd have to wonder when their rivalry began - Ben didn't show up on the island until he was about 11 or 12, and didn't take over as Other leader until the purge in 1992.

Yeah, Ellie has to be Miss Hawking/Farday's mom--though I wonder why she didn't just tell him not to go to the island? Maybe she did & he didn't listen or she let him go because it would muck up the timestream to stop him.
I didn't see previews for next week, but the cast list is whoa!

― Local Garda, Thursday, 29 January 2009 14:42 (fifteen years ago) link
Oh, and at this point do we need all the bait-and-switch scenes like when Ellie tells Daniel "You couldn't stay away, could you?" making it seem as though he was once a part of her crew?
― President Keyes, Thursday, 29 January 2009 14:43 (fifteen years ago) link
Thought the latin was pretty stupid. Especially "Ricardus Alpertus". It's LATIN for Richard Alpert...

Also wondering about Ellie's throwaway "you couldn't stay away?" line that Charlotte and Miles didn't bother to comment on..

Benjaminus Linusus....foreign languages are easy!
That other's accent was weird. more bad British accents in last night's episode than ever before...when Desmond visited that woman whose sister Faraday had messed up she was like straight out of some American version of Dickens.
Also that reminds me, wtf was up with Desmond's bizarre scarf plus sunglasses leisure combo?

"time to unwind...I'm on the mainland now. on a little island called GREAT BRITAIN, it may not have bears and time travel but they make a damn good cup of tea"
btw i was wondering last week - is la so humid that sayid's blowout would have gotten ruined from lying on hurley's couch/being transported to the hospital? he started the ep w/ perfectly styled locks and ended up with poodly mess.

I noticed his hair too! Poor guy spent all that time on the island without his straight iron and still can't get no peace.
I kind of loved Desmond's uber-purple outfit!

show of hands: who's upset widmore wasn't actually a pirate?
― tehresa, Thursday, 29 January 2009 15:26 (fifteen years ago) link
the other thing I was thinking last night. isn't it handy that Oxford University is just basically a cloister walk and a library? apparently the design was based on a Scottish wine making monastery
x-post I wanted Widmore to be 500 year old son of Alvar Hanso or something yeah

Remember when Kate walked out of the hatch and saw the Black Horse? What she really saw was Sawyer, only seeing Sawyer would create a Paradox, so either the Island or her own mind replaced it with something else she has loved in her past, the Black Horse.
Whoa. Is no one else commenting on this because it was already obvious, or because it's implausible? To me, it's the best explanation so far of the weird shit that people have been seeing on the island.
