Yeah I'm not thrilled about more of Mob Doctor now that I've seen the first one. I like the first ep, but now I don't care? Bad sign.

Last Resort was lots of fun, btw. Completely beggars belief in many, many instances and is kinda corny/predictable. But Braugher is just so cool I can't help wanting to watch. And it's fun to have a classic tom Clancy action-movie type drama on tv.

This is exactly how I felt about it.

I'm sort of interested in the idea that some actors are New York actors, or LA actors, or etc. Jordana Spiro was in My Boys, shot in Chicago, and now is in another Chicago show. Zach Gilford went to Northwestern. I wonder how often that sort of thing determines the casting.

Like with Lost I'm sure they had to consider how realistic it was for the particular actors to spend extended time in Hawaii.

lucy liu was decent in kill bill and the futurama she did. she was a definite breakout star on ally mcbeal though i'm not sure you could call what anybody did w/ that show good (though i do remember seeing portia de rossi and thinking 'i hope she ends up on some better show' and lo and behold she did, twice). how many failed tv shows has liu had since her return to tv? edging into christian slater territory i think.

balls, Friday, 28 September 2012 17:57 (eleven years ago) link

i imagine casting geographically matters more of there's an accent that's universally associated w/ the place -- definitely Boston and New York things go out of their way to get people from there or who can do the accent convincingly, but i dunno if Chicago or LA has that to any significant extent.

did er draw on a chicago talent pool? it seems like if a show was gonna be the law and order of chicago it was that one. if it was actually shot in chicago.

balls, Friday, 28 September 2012 18:05 (eleven years ago) link

I think just some of the exterior shots were done in Chicago, the majority of the show was shot in L.A. iirc.

Anyone see the new Up All Night episodes? I watched the first one and have the 2nd on dvr. First was a bit rushed and crazy in introducing an entirely new scenario from Season 1 but w/e, I love all three of the stars so I'll watch this show forever.

Mordy, Friday, 28 September 2012 18:14 (eleven years ago) link

also, not going to change the channel when jessy schram or dichen lachman are on.

or scheming SEXY DEFENSE CONTRACTORS.

2nd ep of Revolution seemed slightly better than the first? I fell asleep 2/3 of the way in though, so I can't verify that completely :/

lol

OTM. Still haven't decided whether I wanna commit to another 1-hr. drama, though. Maybe I'll just rewatch my Homicide DVDs and pretend that the precinct house is underwater.

Old Lunch, Friday, 28 September 2012 20:39 (eleven years ago) link

i really gave up on Up All Night pretty early on and was kind of disappointed when it wasn't canceled, but i guess if there's some kind of reboot going on i should give that a chance.

get to, you mean

j., Friday, 28 September 2012 22:11 (eleven years ago) link

man, the Last Resort pilot is the best Star Trek episode in years!

some dude, Saturday, 29 September 2012 01:22 (eleven years ago) link

Ha ha. OTM! The encore sucked me in. I might be hooked.

Old Lunch, Saturday, 29 September 2012 01:58 (eleven years ago) link

Bailed out on Revolution. Second episode was horrid.

Elvis Telecom, Saturday, 29 September 2012 02:09 (eleven years ago) link

fiery hell, fuck yeah!!!!

i dig lucy liu. i decided this after watching a lifetime network romantic comedy she starred in (i know) called Marry Me, i think? she was really charming and i decided she's been racistly typecast basically ever since ally mcbeal in crypto-"dragon lady" roles. i think she's good. also, she is very pretty.

horseshoe, Saturday, 29 September 2012 13:58 (eleven years ago) link

i love her freckles

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 29 September 2012 21:20 (eleven years ago) link

yeah definitely could be that casting has failed her

some dude, Saturday, 29 September 2012 21:23 (eleven years ago) link

i just have the attitude of ok if you're gonna flip the gender of a character like Watson you REALLY gotta go for broke

some dude, Saturday, 29 September 2012 21:24 (eleven years ago) link

make her REALLY female

max, Saturday, 29 September 2012 21:29 (eleven years ago) link

give her an extra boob or something

max, Saturday, 29 September 2012 21:29 (eleven years ago) link

al i kind of feel like you would like marry me; maybe that's crazy though

horseshoe, Saturday, 29 September 2012 21:33 (eleven years ago) link

haha w/o any caps or italics that sentence REALLY can look different than it means -- it is tragically not crazy that i would probably enjoy a lifetime network romantic comedy though

some dude, Saturday, 29 September 2012 21:40 (eleven years ago) link

coming back to this thread "new answers" style and forgetting the earlier reference to that movie DID make that post very "oh wow"

da croupier, Saturday, 29 September 2012 21:44 (eleven years ago) link

loooool my bad. sorry guys!

the lifetime network film Marry Me is super-corny, but it's also kind of funny. it's like a train song in movie form. (not really. i totally like it more than a train song, but i was trying to use an al-specific analogy)

horseshoe, Saturday, 29 September 2012 21:46 (eleven years ago) link

i edited that down from a paragraph long summary btw

horseshoe, Saturday, 29 September 2012 21:46 (eleven years ago) link

i was gonna say don't condescend to me but most Train singles would be pretty easily adaptable to rom coms

some dude, Saturday, 29 September 2012 22:05 (eleven years ago) link

so so sad but i decided i was gonna watch suburgatory this season, i'd caught bits of a couple of episodes last season (enough to know randy from the wire was on it), so i dled the first season and blew thru alot of it in two days. not gonna say it's as smart as 30 rock or even happy endings or something and it doesn't make me laugh as hard as modern family can sometimes but it's a pretty good show i think. also, since nobody told me this and i would've started watching earlier if i'd known: chris parnell is in this.

balls, Saturday, 29 September 2012 22:15 (eleven years ago) link

yeah it's not amazing but deserves props -- maybe being practically the only decent sitcom about teenagers the last few years makes it easy to overlook

some dude, Saturday, 29 September 2012 22:20 (eleven years ago) link

I thought it was a bit meh until Dalia did this pitch-perfect half-closed one eye eyeroll thing that was AMAZING

kinder, Saturday, 29 September 2012 22:28 (eleven years ago) link

yeah 'rmde @ the suburbs' shows usually bore or annoy the shit out of me and this show : mean girls :: parker lewis can't lose : ferris bueller but i do like that the show tends to roll its eyes at tessa's 'um, i lived in NEW YORK' attitude as well.

yeah it's good at playing both sides of the iatee/jvc2 wars for laughs (xpost)

some dude, Saturday, 29 September 2012 22:37 (eleven years ago) link

Last Resort is really fun. I will watch until they cancel it three weeks from now.

pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Saturday, 29 September 2012 22:38 (eleven years ago) link

its ratings were good enough that i'm optimistic that they can at least wring a good full season out of it

some dude, Saturday, 29 September 2012 22:44 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah that was some 24 level bs

Listen to this, dad (President Keyes), Sunday, 30 September 2012 01:52 (eleven years ago) link

haha is that a compliment

some dude, Sunday, 30 September 2012 01:56 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah that was some 24 level bs

You are thinking of Homeland, brah.

Old Lunch, Sunday, 30 September 2012 02:06 (eleven years ago) link

yeah i guess 24 kept its nuclear bombs from going off until the 8th episode or so

Listen to this, dad (President Keyes), Sunday, 30 September 2012 02:10 (eleven years ago) link

it's a premise-driven heightened reality kind of show -- making the Star Trek parallel early on was helpful for me because i could look past the flimsy effects and sets and get caught up in the gravity of just the idea and the emotion of braugher killin' it as usual

the mirror has 2 chainz (some dude), Sunday, 30 September 2012 02:28 (eleven years ago) link

'star trek episode' is the only thing so far thats made me want to watch last resort, besides the braugher power
