i couldn't see all the night-time island stuff too well tho so thought the Brit guys attacking Sawyer and Juliet were just in standard Dharma suits like Ben's Dad's.

Hurley's Mom should've recognised "Pakistani" Sayid when she saw him unconscious on the couch tho c'mon

lol Mrs Hawking wearing that stupid hood just so people wouldn't immediately twig it was her. maybe it's necessary for solving equations tho.

I was wondering whether the interesting thing about them having no clue whether they're in the past or future is that in the past they can't die?? (grandfather paradox) - but in the future they could. But this wouldn't tie in with Frogurt et al's flaming deaths.

oh they can die... it's their past selves that can't die.

this just occurred to me - when faraday met desmond, it seemed like desmond was alone, which means that flight 815 had just crashed (kelvin died that day) but that the castaways hadn't found the Swan hatch yet. which means that the castaways (bernard, frogurt etc.) who were waiting for faraday, sawyer, juliet, charlotte and miles on the beach should have all appeared right in front of their past just-crashed selves at that same beach.

did we talk about this in the s4 finale:

Widmore: are you here to kill me?
Ben: we both know i can't do that

and why Ben would be unable to kill Charles (but can kill Penny as was his aim)? gives credence to theory of Widmore as immortal time-shifting dude a la Batmanuel. i've given up on anyone actually referring to the name Alvar Hanso now tho.

Bondzilla vs Mechaholmes (blueski), Friday, 23 January 2009 14:30 (fifteen years ago) link

Good point. Although Desmond was 'trapped' in the hatch for ages before Kelvin died, waiting for his replacement, so it may have been pre-crash. But yeah it did seem like it was post-Kelvin death. (xpost)

Matt DC, Friday, 23 January 2009 14:31 (fifteen years ago) link

widmore was on the island at some point so is magic but penny never touched it, just got close?

tehresa, Friday, 23 January 2009 14:31 (fifteen years ago) link

but when Des killed Kelvin he knew by that point that he didn't have to wear the quarantine costume? and Daniel not wearing one suggested this too. so wouldn't it have happened before the plane crash (and while Kelvin was out)?

Bondzilla vs Mechaholmes (blueski), Friday, 23 January 2009 14:33 (fifteen years ago) link

it was great to hear "Are yew hem?" again tho

Bondzilla vs Mechaholmes (blueski), Friday, 23 January 2009 14:37 (fifteen years ago) link

ah yes good point. i guess it was pre-crash then. must be desmond weirdness again since he didn't then mention meeting faraday to kelvin.

Disco/Very (Roz), Friday, 23 January 2009 14:42 (fifteen years ago) link

I wonder if the Nigerian drug plane crashed because the island moved ("in time?") to the spot where it was flying? I think this is a massive xpost to someone else suggesting the island may have suddenly appeared where the Black Rock was sailing..

I wonder if we will actually SEE the Black Rock crashing on the island? More importantly, maybe the castaways will?

Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Friday, 23 January 2009 17:09 (fifteen years ago) link

Is there anyone left on the island who knows anything about the Black Rock - did Locke go there/learn about it from Rousseau? From what I remember the expedition was Kate, Hurley, Jack and Arzt?

skeletal lexing (Finefinemusic), Friday, 23 January 2009 17:23 (fifteen years ago) link

Locke held his father there and took Sawyer there to kill him.

The jumping around in time could be a really good way of filling in some of the mythological gaps that have been knocking around for donkey's years. Maybe we'll see flaming arrow dudes building the four-toed statue or something.

Matt DC, Friday, 23 January 2009 17:27 (fifteen years ago) link

also surely it is time to re-introduce the two kids from the plane (not that this would be v interesting probably, but still think they should be seen more at least with the remaining Others). also CINDY...ok suppose she was brainwashed but it's hard to believe the stuff they were doing to Carl would actually work on someone that much.

Shamelessly cribbed from the fluxblog front page right now:

The best part is how Ben does not respond to the hot pocket in any way until after it has hit the wall.

Charlotte is actually Aaron from the future.
Everything is taking place in Hurley's mind.
Charles Widmore is Satan/an Alien.
Aliens are somehow involved a la Indiana Jones 4.
The Island is Alive and eats people.

Please add more Lost developments that you fear happening.

Am I correct in thinking I saw Abbadon at the door as one of the cops, asking Cheech if Hurley was home (when he and Sayid were hiding there)?

skeletal lexing (Finefinemusic), Friday, 23 January 2009 20:21 (fifteen years ago) link

or did I just fall prey to the "white people can't tell other races apart" trap…? Must re-watch episode.

I had a party for the premiere so there were a lot of non-TV distractions and sometimes people talking over other people.

It would seem like Hurley would've noticed that as he ran up to them though, right?

Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Friday, 23 January 2009 20:53 (fifteen years ago) link

Didn't Charlotte say "Walt, Walt's missing" or something close just before that first time-displacement nosebleed thing?

bear, bear, bear, Friday, 23 January 2009 21:28 (fifteen years ago) link

Lt. Daniels knocked on the door with fake police creds, which Hurley was too far way to see, but probably wasn't with the real police stakeout, which came later.

I thought one of the cops was Abbadon at first, too. Really tall skinny guy. But I guess not...

yeah I re-watched the episode and I noticed that they do a really good job of never showing the guy's face (even when Cheech drives by and waves, you only see his partner's face) and the guy's frame is a duplicate of Abbadon's. I do believe that if Hurley had gotten close enough to see him he would have said something, though.. he's not credited in the episode on IMDB or Lostpedia so I guess I just have to chalk it up to a mistake. Alas.

Also in rewatching the episodes, I wondered if the reason Sun wants to kill Ben is because Jeremy Bentham did visit her, and told her his murder of Keamy is what blew up the freighter. For this to be true, though, Jin would have to not show up on the island, or Locke would see him? Maybe Jin will get sent to another time and thus manage to avoid Locke. Can you tell I want Jin not to have died? Hah.

Clearly what this series needs is an action sequence where Sayid, Ben and Jack break Hurley out of prison.

Matt DC, Saturday, 24 January 2009 19:59 (fifteen years ago) link

Maybe that guy is Abaddon's body double. I also thought it was Sawyer running the camera in the Dr. Candle scene but on second look it was just a dirty hippie.

Widmore: are you here to kill me?

Props to the producers for having Daniel lay out the "rules" in this episode. In that context, this leads me to believe that the Ben-Widmore scene actually takes place in the past somehow.

mitya, Sunday, 25 January 2009 05:56 (fifteen years ago) link

Locke isn't really dead, he's only playing dead to get them back to the island. He was bit by one of the medusa spiders that the models from S2(?) took when they were buried alive.

redmond, Sunday, 25 January 2009 06:01 (fifteen years ago) link

That sounds like the sort of emotionally satisfying conclusion that television writers of this caliber generally reach for when wrapping up their most important character and plot points.

Clay, Sunday, 25 January 2009 06:06 (fifteen years ago) link

It will be interesting to see how he dies. The implication at the moment seems to be that he won't be dead if they can all get back to the island. A couple of questions:

- Will the island actually "resurrect" him? (Because he died off-island he isn't actually dead.)
- Does the time limitation relate to only one particular moment when they can get back, or is the issue that if they don't get back before then Locke will really be dead.

mitya, Sunday, 25 January 2009 06:10 (fifteen years ago) link

i thought the first scene of the first episode was pretty goofy. "sure, mack, travelling thru time, whatever you say pal"... i mean that was pretty bad, good faraday reveal aside. and the guy who plays chang is a really terrible actor.

s1ocki, Sunday, 25 January 2009 06:27 (fifteen years ago) link

i also thought the charlotte thing meant she was pregnant but the constant thing makes more sense i guess

s1ocki, Sunday, 25 January 2009 06:28 (fifteen years ago) link

I think the guy who plays Chang is hitting just the right notes, with the bizarre kind of character he's supposed to be.

Props to the producers for having Daniel lay out the "rules" in this episode. In that context, this leads me to believe that the Ben-Widmore scene actually takes place in the past somehow.

It has to be after the island jump/Ben arriving in the desert), though, since Widmore "broke the rules" but having Ben's daughter killed - I guess that means she was supposed to be someone who survived? Though at the time (season four), the "rules" seemed to be that good people aren't allowed to die (like Michael's bomb vs. the freighter people). But maybe the rules that Ben/Widmore follow aren't the same ones the Dharma people/Faraday are talking about, which is plausible.

Nhex, Sunday, 25 January 2009 06:39 (fifteen years ago) link

I think we're talking about different sets of rules: the facts of time travel vs. the rules of engagement.

I don't think Charlotte's problem is constant-related. Everyone who had that issue also was experiencing the time-jumping phenomenon that afflicted Fisher Stevens on the boat. Charlotte isn't experiencing that.

Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Sunday, 25 January 2009 07:17 (fifteen years ago) link

she sort of is. she's both mentally and physically time-jumping whereas the guys on the boat were just mentally time-jumping.

it has to be something similar to Desmond since they give her the exact same creepy nosebleed. also worth noting the builder dude in the cave at the beginning of the episode who is carted off has the same bleeding from his nose. maybe it's just exposure to electromagnetic energy or whatever it is that causes the time lapses...

anyone speculated yet as to who got the court order to get the blood tests from kate and GOOBER?
