Also I have to say Sun's "I want revenge" thing and Sun in general now seems utterly boring. Kill her off asap. I don't want to watch high powered meetings between her and Widmore.

Dude you think that all the female characters are boring and should be killed off! Except Juliet, who is like the most boring of all of them. TBH high-powered business-bitch Sun is pretty much the first time she's been interesting in five seasons - I bet she knows all sorts of hidden secret shit now, and we kind of need a Widmore ally to keep the plot moving.

I thought the first episode of this was like OMG WAU! and the second was just pretty good. I like the new format, I can't really see what good flashbacks would do from now on except for freighter dudes and maybe Ben. I liked Daniel's de facto leader status as the only guy who know's what's going on, but the time-jumping could get annoying after a while.

The link between him and Desmond is way cool. Presumably Hatch Desmond didn't recognise Daniel for the same reason Later Island Desmond didn't recognise Daniel despite seeing him at Oxford - weird Constant relationship and all that.

Who were the British guys who amushed Sawyer and Juliet at some point? Dharma dudes?

I love how Richard has picked up Ben's mantle of being comedy condescending to Locke. "What's the compass for?" - "It points North, John."

And most importantly - would smash Ana-Lucia.

ha ha did i not just say this is going to get waved off as "desmond is weird"

British dudes are probably a Widmore faction from the past, pre-Dharma... I don't think they looked like any of the previous Dharma suits.

Sun being very devious and revenge-motivated is a good development.

And most importantly - would smash Ana-Lucia.

I love the fact that none of the people off the island have any idea what is up with the people on the island, and none of the people on the island know the six are alive.

I do think it's weird that Sawyer thinks the helicopter went down along with the freighter ... I'd think that he and others would have been able to see it flying away?

i lold when ben asked if jack had inquired to locke regarding the fate of the island and the people on it - of course he didnt u silly man dont u know the island chooses its inhabitants based on their proclivity for not asking really obvious questions

Lostpedia suggests that memory loss among time travelers (such as Desmond and Faraday) could be a course-correction so that their knowledge of the future doesn't prohibitively affect the present.

Bianca Jagger (jaymc), Thursday, 22 January 2009 22:33 (fifteen years ago) link

Dude you think that all the female characters are boring and should be killed off!

well yeah, note to lost, get some good female characters. kate has her moments but to be fair they have practically written all the female characters into these boring roles. kate running around with a kid, sun as completely unconvincing power business woman who actually just is pining for dead husband, juliet just hangin out kissin losties.

the stories/events just don't challenge the male characters in the slightest, eg there is not a single female character involved in the mythology of the island/the others/etc etc.

Local Garda, Thursday, 22 January 2009 22:50 (fifteen years ago) link

Except Sun, who appears to have ended up slap bang in the middle of it. The whole mythology of the island seems to be tied up in whatever Ben and Widmore are fighting over. And Claire, probably.

Matt DC, Thursday, 22 January 2009 23:05 (fifteen years ago) link

And Penny.

Matt DC, Thursday, 22 January 2009 23:06 (fifteen years ago) link

Haha and Charlotte, but yeah whatever.

Matt DC, Thursday, 22 January 2009 23:08 (fifteen years ago) link

It's not the same as Ben/Richard/Locke/Hurley/Desmond/Faraday etc etc etc. Men get the magic island powers and women chase their babies/men around the place.

I'm not indicting it from a feminist point of view, I'm a guy, what do I know, it's just quite boring. Why isn't there a woman involved in the actual mythology of the island, DIRECTLY? Why aren't there female characters you want to ask questions about?

Claire is the only one, and she's v v v much in the background.

x-post and Charlotte what?

Local Garda, Thursday, 22 January 2009 23:09 (fifteen years ago) link

and Charlotte was born there or whatever, has been there before ... we haven't found out yet

"after you spent all this time trying to get back here"

dmr, Thursday, 22 January 2009 23:11 (fifteen years ago) link

Charlotte is still very underexposed tho. I assume they're expanding the Charlotte plotline but she's the only one who even has the potential to have a direct role in the whole "the island" element of things. Or the only one who is even vaguely interested in the power/nature of the island.

Like seriously...why do none of the female characters give a damn about the island and all the stuff practically every male character in the show is going bananas about?

Local Garda, Thursday, 22 January 2009 23:11 (fifteen years ago) link

Well now there's Ms Hawking, and if she's really Farraday's mom then she's going to play a bigger part

Dan I., Thursday, 22 January 2009 23:12 (fifteen years ago) link

(I know she's only ever had like 5 mins of screentime though)

Dan I., Thursday, 22 January 2009 23:12 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah here's hoping...I just think they've sold short a lot someone like Kate in particular, who used to have good flashbacks and then weird island stuff used to happen to her. at what point did she just become one dimensional action woman with zero personality? and sun, what is her character now? who is she? it's just v unconvincing.

Local Garda, Thursday, 22 January 2009 23:14 (fifteen years ago) link

Loved the 1st episode. 2nd nearly as good too. Random thoughts:
- What is happening to Charlotte? Reminded me of Primer (and every other film where nosebleeds=minddeath)
- If Desmond is an exception to the (thankfully clearly laid down) rules about not changing the past etc, that would explain why Grandma Time had to go and make him choose certain paths etc. (Everyone else probably figured this out ages ago).
- The last lightflash timeshift thing ended up with them in the past, right? With Desmond still in the hatch. Wondering where nu-others (handchoppers) fit in here.
- LOVED the scene with Marvin Candle filming the instruction videos!
- LOVED Hurley chucking the hot pocket and wanting a code name and buying a Shih Tzu shirt.
- Ben has is acting like a little schoolboy now he's got the prospect of going back to the island. Quite liked that he stood up for Jack.
- Oh yeah, what about all the dead people on the island like Boone, Nikki + Paolo... presumably they're not walking around being undead?
- My boss drove past a huge billboard saying 'so you think Locke is dead?' or words to that effect. Not best pleased as she still hasn't watched all of Season 4 yet. Still I think we can assume he's holding his breath in there or something?

xpost why do we think /know Ms Hawking is Farraday's mother? My mind is going nuts trying to put everything together...

Not the real Village People, Thursday, 22 January 2009 23:14 (fifteen years ago) link

I'm pretty sure that every character still alive (except Rose/Bernard maybe) is directly involved in the mythology of the island*. But yeah I'd agree that the dudes seem to get most of the mystique. Maybe that's a problem the writers noticed midway through - eg totally changing Sun's position - she's the MD of a company that's linked with the island in some way and there are definitely going to be answers that way. And we know Charlotte's doing something archeologically/Dharma related - she's no Miles or Faraday though, needs weird spooky power.

*Actually Sayid and Sawyer don't really seem to be as yet, their roles seem to be to kill/zing people in ever more inventive ways.

Matt DC, Thursday, 22 January 2009 23:16 (fifteen years ago) link

I do hate the interactions between kate and the kid, like someone mentioned above. There's probably some audience demographic that loves that shit though

Dan I., Thursday, 22 January 2009 23:16 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah the Kate stuff is dull - I'm presuming she's there to give some shape to the Aaron thing but Claire would be better. I'm mostly basing this on the fact I met a girl who looked like Claire at a party a couple of months ago and damn...

Kids are always boring though - maybe they should use time travel magic to automatically make Aaron like 18.

Matt DC, Thursday, 22 January 2009 23:18 (fifteen years ago) link

Speaking of kids, aren't they supposed to take Walt back?

Matt DC, Thursday, 22 January 2009 23:18 (fifteen years ago) link

I would love a scene where Ben sneaks up on Kate from behind, and then she turns around and reflexively throws the baby at him.

Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Thursday, 22 January 2009 23:18 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah I agree charlotte (so far) is just a poor character, how little has she developed since being brought in compared to miles and daniel? where are they even going with her? I guess she can still be developed. I dunno, I guess I'm saying they just don't write v good female roles. and they've taken the foot off the gas (long ago) for good characters like sun and kate...

Local Garda, Thursday, 22 January 2009 23:20 (fifteen years ago) link

They haven't really done much with Miles yet either and they need to very shortly. He can talk to dead boars!

Matt DC, Thursday, 22 January 2009 23:21 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah they've not done a lot but he's sketched out pretty well, like he actually has a personality.

Local Garda, Thursday, 22 January 2009 23:22 (fifteen years ago) link

Actually I think the issue is that Lost is generally amazing at writing mystical/action characters, okay at writing comic characters and a bit dull when it comes to domestic characters. See also - Jack, Michael.

Matt DC, Thursday, 22 January 2009 23:23 (fifteen years ago) link

I think Jack is a v good character.

Local Garda, Thursday, 22 January 2009 23:24 (fifteen years ago) link

Is the compass Richard gave to John also one of the items he picked when Richard visited him as a child?

POLAR BAER PYJAMAS (nickalicious), Thursday, 22 January 2009 23:24 (fifteen years ago) link

Also the guys that wanted to chop off Juliet's hand - I don't think any of them had a DHARMA symbol of any kind on their jumpsuits.

Does anyone else think the final scene of season 5 is going to be Faraday down in the donkeywheel hole?

POLAR BAER PYJAMAS (nickalicious), Thursday, 22 January 2009 23:26 (fifteen years ago) link

I don't think the final scene of Season 5 will focus on a character introduced in Season 4, no.

Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Thursday, 22 January 2009 23:27 (fifteen years ago) link

Also, it was getting a bit ridiculous how every character that came into shot like ever, had to have their head out of view/identity hidden until the last... possible... MOMENT OF TRUTHHH!

Not the real Village People, Thursday, 22 January 2009 23:28 (fifteen years ago) link

- The last lightflash timeshift thing ended up with them in the past, right? With Desmond still in the hatch. Wondering where nu-others (handchoppers) fit in here.

This seems obviously during the Dharma purge; thus there will be no Desmond in the hatch (too early for that), it could possibly be one of Desmond's predecessors, there could be no one in the hatch as well....

The british accents and WWII-era fatigues had me guessing this was probably whenever Widmore found the island -- pre-Dharma, before they "took the island from him" or whatever he told Ben after Ben sneaked into his hotel in season 4.

WHOAH! Had to wait a day because of work and torrents, but this was quite the start of a new season! And gawd do I heart Daniel Faraday. He's by far the most intruiging character that was introduced after season 3.

Some questions though, please help me out here if you can:

1. How do we know pendulum lady is Faraday's mother?
2. What was the significance of Charlotte's nose bleed, which scared Faraday quite a bit?
3. Why did Sun call Kate? Why did she want to meet up?
4. Who's butcher Jill and what's her connection with Ben?

@Roz, these are two sites I use to get my Lost fix rather quick after airing:
