lol at the old lady "obama" throwaway joke

buh, Friday, 29 June 2012 03:52 (eleven years ago) link

Would be unsurprised to see a completely different ex-wife in a later episode.

"Holy crap," I mutter, as he gently taps my area (silby), Friday, 29 June 2012 03:52 (eleven years ago) link

yeah i have no doubts about that.

Fas Ro Duh (Gukbe), Friday, 29 June 2012 04:02 (eleven years ago) link

the bit after the credits was pretty amazing, i've definitely been there

frogbs, Friday, 29 June 2012 05:38 (eleven years ago) link

this maybe speaks to my emotional immaturity more than the quality of the ep but i thought the relationship stuff in this was really good, some sense of self-awareness and communication having to be dragged out of louie. & i am maybe overreading but i thought the clinton/gore sign in his apt was interesting too. he has this sorta self-effacing sense of what his character should be in the programme, some of his laziness, like when he gets in a fight with the right leaning comic in s1. it seemed like a prominent thing in support of him being just vaguely mired in the '90s.

blossom smulch (schlump), Friday, 29 June 2012 13:25 (eleven years ago) link

the total disregard for continuity here is really neat and unlike anything I've ever seen on TV before; like, how the hell did Louie decide on that actress to play his ex-wife?

frogbs, Friday, 29 June 2012 13:46 (eleven years ago) link

I mean I'm guessing she's just a great person for the part, but still, I can't even imagine another show that would just do that

frogbs, Friday, 29 June 2012 13:46 (eleven years ago) link

Maybe my expectations were raised too high, but I was pretty underwhelmed by the premiere episode. Also, enough with the stereotype "I-write-well-for-women" Jewish super-smart castrating bitch who happens to be right character...we get it, you're coming off well, Louis, can we just get the old girlfriend back from wherever she flew off to? (and I loved season one but season two not so much)

Iago Galdston, Friday, 29 June 2012 15:30 (eleven years ago) link

(and I loved season one but season two not so much)

does not compute

Fas Ro Duh (Gukbe), Friday, 29 June 2012 15:41 (eleven years ago) link

oh wait, was season two with pamela adlon? all i'm saying is she was the saving grace of that season for me...sorry!

Iago Galdston, Friday, 29 June 2012 15:44 (eleven years ago) link

Feels like this show is about to get over-analyzed episode by episode versus praised as a whole (see: Slate).

the car!

Authorities don't know who shot the 50 Cent the goose. (forksclovetofu), Friday, 29 June 2012 16:24 (eleven years ago) link

meh. seems like the show has already hit the late Seinfeld stage. but i look forward to being totally wrong!

Iago Galdston, Friday, 29 June 2012 16:31 (eleven years ago) link

Eazy's right - I feel like this is the new Arrested Development and will be analyzed as such, but the writing isn't really that rock-solid; it's probably of a better quality, as a whole, but I feel like Louie is designed to be sort of hit-and-miss.

frogbs, Friday, 29 June 2012 16:32 (eleven years ago) link

I don't really buy that this was a "miss". I know MZS was saying that this season is a bit slow getting going but it really takes off about 5 eps in if that gives comfort to the people who didn't care for this. I'm happy to enjoy the rhythms of the show, really, and I love his attention to detail and the small but honest things like him lying on the couch there at the end.

Fas Ro Duh (Gukbe), Friday, 29 June 2012 16:44 (eleven years ago) link

Rad. I love the "is this after midnight?" bit.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 29 June 2012 17:00 (eleven years ago) link

My favorite was that green sign with the line through it, "okay, what does this mean? It's not red, so it can't be bad, right?"

frogbs, Friday, 29 June 2012 17:05 (eleven years ago) link

this was a good ep

I'm happy enough to be back in Louie world even if this wasn't the best episode (definitely laughed hardest at old lady obama joke)

i never thought i'd be one of those people that thought television was bad, but it's clearly turning everyone autistic

I liked the episode, it was fun. Loved the way he nodded to the carefree euro 'HAY I'M RIDING A MOTORCYCLE AROUND TOWN' .while he's looking like the most awkward dude ever riding a motorcycle.
And I got a kick out of the swarm of motorcycle stunt dudes coming from out of nowhere.

I dunno, I thought the girlfriend stuff was a funny play on 'ugh Louis you pathetic shlub'...ie him using her expectations of his loserness to get pretty much all the outcomes he wanted; breaking up with her, some comfort when he's hurt, and for her to leave once he got fed.

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 30 June 2012 05:29 (eleven years ago) link

It wasn't omg awesome or anything, kinda weirdly disjointed with the vignettes but still fun

Yep, he really knocked that "motorbikes are cool" thing right on the head. I was able to turn to my husband and say "that'd be you if I let you buy a motorbike."

ha ha. i just think that part of this show's charm is its range & variety, which this ep did some work in expanding - the relationship dynamics thing, which afaict was a pretty novel depiction of shitty relationship miscommunication - & so naysaying on account of its maybe-failure as a comic exercise (like how seinfeld would suck if it wasn't funny) seems shortsighted. but i am a zealous defender of the show here, so.

blossom smulch (schlump), Saturday, 30 June 2012 20:01 (eleven years ago) link

Basically everyone who's seen the first 5 seems to agree that the first is the least exciting. Which has me very stoked indeed.

Simon H., Saturday, 30 June 2012 20:12 (eleven years ago) link

it felt very much like an odds and ends episode, same as the halloween thing from last season but much better. He says he has at least one multi part episode, so i don't mind him fucking around with a series of short gags about a fucked up day.
Looking forward to the maria bamford arc!

Authorities don't know who shot the 50 Cent the goose. (forksclovetofu), Saturday, 30 June 2012 20:39 (eleven years ago) link

Bamford is on, hot shit! I can totally imagine that the eps will get worlds better from here on out.

Iago Galdston, Saturday, 30 June 2012 21:21 (eleven years ago) link

The guest list on this season is pretty nuts. I'll shut up in case anyone would prefer to be surprised.

Simon H., Saturday, 30 June 2012 22:05 (eleven years ago) link

I would.

catbus otm (gbx), Saturday, 30 June 2012 22:12 (eleven years ago) link

yeah excited for Bamford

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 30 June 2012 23:10 (eleven years ago) link

IMO this show is more depressing and crushing than funny

same thing, really.

"Basically everyone who's seen the first 5 seems to agree that the first is the least exciting. Which has me very stoked indeed."

cosign, not the best episode ever but certainly good tv. the car getting mashed. the biker gang. the parking signs. the breakup. the standup at the beginning. all pretty awesome! season 2 was hit and miss, but with a ratio of about 5 hits to one miss. i vote that dude totally gets a pass on the misses though cause he, like, *reaches*, ya know? if he wasn't brave enough to do the suicidal friend anti-laughfest episode, would he have had the balls to bring subway/pamela to the networks either?

messiahwannabe, Monday, 2 July 2012 12:28 (eleven years ago) link

thought that first ep was *amazing* except for the standup bit which was a bit average. watched it with my girl after we'd had a little tiff and were being a bit quiet with each other. at the end of the ep everything was okay again. thanks mr szekely!

"Louis is the funniest man in America," says his longtime friend Chris Rock. "Everything's clicking. I'm sure Prince felt this way when he did Purple Rain."

last episode was... darling nikki? we still got an i would die 4 u, when doves cry, and beautiful ones coming i reckon

messiahwannabe, Monday, 2 July 2012 13:19 (eleven years ago) link

not to mention his sign o the times coming up in a season or 2

messiahwannabe, Monday, 2 July 2012 13:21 (eleven years ago) link

which means in five years or so we'll get "Batdance"
