xp

deej, Friday, 29 February 2008 20:07 (sixteen years ago) link

I also agree that it's better for behavior than appearance, but I might not like it for behavior, and I could take it as complimentary re looks if from someone with much greater aesthetic sense.

I don't mind having a cute ass, but being a cute person? Not so much.

what do women mean when they call a guy 'cute'

deej, Friday, 29 February 2008 20:10 (sixteen years ago) link

"women"

Laurel, Friday, 29 February 2008 20:10 (sixteen years ago) link

womyn?

sleep, Friday, 29 February 2008 20:12 (sixteen years ago) link

Though I think you can be infantilized and still sexualized, as long as you are objectified. Men, particularly str8s, are less into that for obv cultural reasons

Gavin, Friday, 29 February 2008 20:12 (sixteen years ago) link

That's weird, because str8 women are totally into it.

Laurel, Friday, 29 February 2008 20:13 (sixteen years ago) link

I fucking hate being called "cute" because I am not 11.

HI DERE, Friday, 29 February 2008 20:14 (sixteen years ago) link

they also hate being called "sweet". they think it means you are calling them a pussy.

No, that's not the issue with "sweet" -- I think "sweet" more often cuts back to the near-universal young-man moment where you make some big gesture of adoration to someone you're pining for and she says "oh, that's so ... that's really ... really sweet of you."

nabisco, Friday, 29 February 2008 20:15 (sixteen years ago) link

A puppy is cute; I am hot.

Dr Morbius, Friday, 29 February 2008 20:16 (sixteen years ago) link

I'm with morbs!

El Tomboto, Friday, 29 February 2008 20:17 (sixteen years ago) link

Laurel, I meant it's more of a threat to stereotypical male self image to be objectified (instead of being the active looker) than it is to stereotypical female self image which is raised to solicit the gaze. There are many refreshing and wonderful exceptions.

Gavin, Friday, 29 February 2008 20:18 (sixteen years ago) link

o_O

Laurel, Friday, 29 February 2008 20:19 (sixteen years ago) link

You guys are all crazy. ILX overthinking things nonsense.

dell, Friday, 29 February 2008 20:19 (sixteen years ago) link

I think some men might be into it, but moreso in the right context. I think it works better as a term of endearment than for flirting/dating.

gabbneb, Friday, 29 February 2008 20:20 (sixteen years ago) link

Now that you mention it, Morbs, you are pretty handsome. The dimple, though, is actually cute.

Laurel, Friday, 29 February 2008 20:20 (sixteen years ago) link

Laurel, I meant it's more of a threat to stereotypical male self image to be objectified (instead of being the active looker) than it is to stereotypical female self image which is raised to solicit the gaze.

With all due respect, this is perhaps the most nonsensical thing I have ever read.

dell, Friday, 29 February 2008 20:21 (sixteen years ago) link

+ nabisco also correct re the association of sweet. cute and sweet are both strongly associated with insincerity and condescension whenever applied to adults

El Tomboto, Friday, 29 February 2008 20:22 (sixteen years ago) link

All due respect = zero

Laurel, Friday, 29 February 2008 20:22 (sixteen years ago) link

Given that I've read both Nude Spock and squirel_police on this board, that is nowhere near the most nonsensical thing I've ever read.

HI DERE, Friday, 29 February 2008 20:23 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah there is def some condescension in 'cute'

deej, Friday, 29 February 2008 20:23 (sixteen years ago) link

Look, if somebody calls me cute or sweet, it better be because they like that my better impulses are hidden under this thick, cracked hide and a lot of eyeliner, and they better be somebody who's close and trusted enough to make personal observations about my chewy center. The rest of yous back the hell up.

Laurel, Friday, 29 February 2008 20:24 (sixteen years ago) link

What planet do you guys live on?!!!! Good christ.

NO! I REJECT YOUR COMPLIMENT!!! wtf?

dell, Friday, 29 February 2008 20:24 (sixteen years ago) link

I can't imagine many guys caring much either way about a straightforward "cute," said in a non-patronizing way. (Especially in an indirect way -- if someone's like "that girl thinks you're cute," who doesn't view that as good?) It's only bad in that limited patronizing context that includes "you're so funny" and "isn't that sweet," as discussed.

nabisco, Friday, 29 February 2008 20:25 (sixteen years ago) link

you boys are so sensitive. it's...endearing.

bell_labs, Friday, 29 February 2008 20:25 (sixteen years ago) link

I think it works better as a term of endearment than for flirting/dating.

in a relationship just about anything works as a term of endearment, though.

El Tomboto, Friday, 29 February 2008 20:26 (sixteen years ago) link

One might even say...ahh no.

Laurel, Friday, 29 February 2008 20:26 (sixteen years ago) link

it's a dope womanpower insult tool

Arms, Friday, 29 February 2008 20:27 (sixteen years ago) link

Haha what's the patronizing code language used by guys to mean "that's nice of you, but I am currently trying not to bust out laughing at the fact that you thought you could get with this?"

nabisco, Friday, 29 February 2008 20:27 (sixteen years ago) link

Actually yeah, I'm totally hearing the word "cute" as used by your overbearing great aunt as opposed to as used by the lascivious sexpot grinding against your crotch on the dance floor. It's more than acceptable in the latter circumstance.

HI DERE, Friday, 29 February 2008 20:27 (sixteen years ago) link

heh i need to start reading thredz

deej, Friday, 29 February 2008 20:28 (sixteen years ago) link

When I was little we used 'Cute' to mean 'good-looking', as in "Oh my god he is so cute". Sort of like how 'hot' is used now.

Now, if I say a guy is cute, it would be a compliment but not a sexual one. Just one of affection. My boyfriend doesn't accept my 'cute' compliments very often, and I have to change my phrasing to 'ruggedly handsome' or something.

franny glass, Friday, 29 February 2008 20:29 (sixteen years ago) link

(I suppose the irritating male habit would be to go for it anyway and then turn to an "it's not you, it's me" thing.)

nabisco, Friday, 29 February 2008 20:30 (sixteen years ago) link

"M'am, I reserve the right to refuse service to anyone. I have not and will not charge you a cent and you're free to take your business elsewhere. I'd rather not call the police, but if you insist on continuing to disturb me, I will. Please leave."

dell, Friday, 29 February 2008 20:30 (sixteen years ago) link

I guess a more serious answer is "Sorry, I have to get up early tomorrow..." My tactic used to be to wait for her to turn the other way and then duck behind random people in the crowd.

HI DERE, Friday, 29 February 2008 20:32 (sixteen years ago) link

dudes who have been around know that the vast majority of women use "cute" and "sweet" to feign affection out of guilt so we ain't fucking buying it. end of story.

El Tomboto, Friday, 29 February 2008 20:35 (sixteen years ago) link

and as with any other negative semantic association it's the word that counts, not your intent

Arms, Friday, 29 February 2008 20:36 (sixteen years ago) link

That isn't necessarily true, Tom. I've seen a lot of times where "cute" is used as the safe designator of "wau he's attractive", kind of a placeholder until she gets to know the designated cuteboy and can figure out if he's worth boning.

HI DERE, Friday, 29 February 2008 20:37 (sixteen years ago) link

xp I don't even know who you are.

Laurel, Friday, 29 February 2008 20:38 (sixteen years ago) link

not guilt so much, they just don't wanna hurt your feelings, a compliment's a compliment etc. xposts to tombot

blueski, Friday, 29 February 2008 20:38 (sixteen years ago) link

Oh wait, I can think of a complimentary line that probably has the same effect on some girls: "you're so easy to hang out with" (with or without explicit "it's like hanging out with one of the guys")

xpost - yeah, I think the "that's sweet but go away" thing is a very small subset and I wouldn't kneejerk read that into "cute" at ALL

nabisco, Friday, 29 February 2008 20:39 (sixteen years ago) link

(A lot of men, OTOH, seem to be able to decide a girl is worth boning upon sight and spend the time afterwards trying to figure out if it's worth sticking around to bone again.)

HI DERE, Friday, 29 February 2008 20:39 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah to me there's a difference between "cute" and "sexy"- "cute" is for, I dunno, kittens or puppies. Not potential sexual partners.

the tune is space, Monday, 28 March 2011 19:50 (thirteen years ago) link

girls around the office use either "cute" or "hot", nearly interchangeably. as in "omg who's the new cute/hot guy?!???!". i'd say the only difference is "hot" guy is 1 degree of attractiveness about "cute" guy.

I don't recall ever being called cute (and I looked uncannily like Donny Osmond most of my social life). It would have been nice.

i get both from my gf so i must have some major weight oscillations

they look neotenous

As Stephen J. Gould famously pointed out, Mickey Mouse displayed ever more neotony as he aged. nagl imo.

Aimless, Tuesday, 29 March 2011 00:51 (thirteen years ago) link

haha, better be careful!

Publicidad de Sexo (Abbbottt), Tuesday, 29 March 2011 01:05 (thirteen years ago) link

I say that because "haha, better be careful" is the only phrase Mickey Mouse says, in my imagination.

Publicidad de Sexo (Abbbottt), Tuesday, 29 March 2011 01:06 (thirteen years ago) link

I've actually been called neotenic!

corey, Tuesday, 29 March 2011 01:08 (thirteen years ago) link

!!!
I have only seen pics of you but you have way too angle-y a face* to be considered neotenic imo. You do have crazy huge eyes, tho, maybe that's why that was said?

*trying to think of a non-weird way to say this & failing, it is agl tho do not worry

Publicidad de Sexo (Abbbottt), Tuesday, 29 March 2011 01:20 (thirteen years ago) link

Me, I basically look the same now as I did at age eight. This is not a thread about chubby cheek chicks tho.
