makes sense tastewise, also makes the bottle last that much longer. win/win

Cripes, is that a fresh shelf shot from the UK of all the Van Winkles? What are the prices?

well....if you see it grab it. no more is shipping in 2012. depending on where you live it may come back in future years but my sense is that they're going to push the 81 and focus on keeping the supply of 81 up.

Also going away: Elijah Craig 18, to be permanently replaced by Elijah Craig 20, which costs three times as much.

yup

i got that pic from this blog - http://bkarmstrong.blogspot.co.uk/2012/04/amathus-drinks-in-soho-london.html
― just sayin, Thursday, 21 June 2012 20:35 (eleven years ago) link
I've heard tell of a lot of variation from bottle to bottle. Besides, Scotch fans are guilty of tasting for worse than tree bark!
― Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 21 June 2012 20:44 (eleven years ago) link
xpost And yet, if you go to the Amathus site, they only show three variants of Van Winkle, and one is out of stock. The 23 is 275 GBP!
― Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 21 June 2012 20:46 (eleven years ago) link
yeah josh i've heard that too re: variation

15, 20, or 23? they all have the guy.
― call all destroyer, Thursday, 21 June 2012 20:54 (eleven years ago) link
I've only had the 15. A friend got a Van Winkle flight at a restaurant (where someone else was footing the bill).

Friend came over and we did an impromptu tasting of each of the woodford bottles. We approve, but the aged one needs a sliver of ice/splash of water to open it up

The picture up thread is an accurate reflection of Amthus's current in-stock range of Van WinklesIn their Soho (London) shop (I popped in today because i was in the area).
The nice lady in there said that she seems to sell a lot of the stuff to very pleased American tourists. Prices start at £48 for the weaker 10-year.
― Tim, Saturday, 23 June 2012 15:46 (eleven years ago) link
$50 was what the 15-year was going for less than a year ago. Back when you could still sometimes find it. So £48 for the 10 ... wow, from an exchange rate perspective. Tim, how much the 15?
― Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 23 June 2012 19:29 (eleven years ago) link
I didn't make a note, I'm afraid - I think it was something like £75 but don't hold me to that.
I won't be in Chicago for a few months but I'm a fairly regular visitor there, fwiw...
― Tim, Saturday, 23 June 2012 19:38 (eleven years ago) link
Ha, you got my wheels spinning! But even £48 is a lot for a bottle of bourbon, given we live in a golden age when, I dunno, bargains like Old Weller, Elijah Craig and Ancient Ancient Age abound.
― Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 23 June 2012 19:57 (eleven years ago) link
UK prices for US-whisky are always high, except for supermarket stuff like JD.
It seems roughly that $x in the USA becomes £x here, at best!

so $101 for the rye; really not that much worse than it is here and with the added bonus of just sitting on the shelf
― call all destroyer, Saturday, 23 June 2012 20:58 (eleven years ago) link
My excellent local drinks shop sometimes has Winkle Rye, for around £68.

This is more indicative of the price differential...

when the woodford rye 2-pack came out here it was actually around 100 before i started to see it closer to 70 so the price of that thing has kind of been all over the place

that site above has laphroaig for £30 which would be $47. laphroaig here is generally $50 - (more commonly) $60.

not impressed by EC12 (bought at good spirit co) (who stock three van winkles iirc)
― reflexing cozen stail (cozen), Saturday, 23 June 2012 22:19 (eleven years ago) link
That £30 ( as with all quoted uk prices) includes tax. Which your US figures might too, but I can never tell.
― Tim, Saturday, 23 June 2012 22:33 (eleven years ago) link
Nah, ours are usually pretax
