xost Stoke get away with things because referees look at the first minute of a game and think: "Jesus. If I blow for everything we're not going to get any football between the free kicks." So they don't blow. They allow Stoke to dictate what the rules of the game are to be. Wimbledon did the same thing. And it's not just at the Britannia - it's on the road too.

aye you see that a lot with early fouls. Today in the Scottish Cup Final there was a blatant elbow by a Hearts player that was 70/30 yellow/red imo and it went unpunished - pundits were saying the ref didn't want to book anyone too early because he wanted to keep a lid on the game o_O

Djibril Citté (onimo), Saturday, 19 May 2012 16:01 (fourteen years ago)

idk, if stoke players were already getting booked for persistent tactical fouling by about 15 mins, you might actually see some football

Serov devochka s persikami (nakhchivan), Saturday, 19 May 2012 16:10 (fourteen years ago)

The decapitation-at-the-thighs by Vinnie Jones on Steve McMahon in the first minute or two of the 1988 FA Cup Final is an astounding example of the genre

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 19 May 2012 16:17 (fourteen years ago)

Didn't work so well for Gazza in 91, but then Spurs did win the cup so who's to say tbh

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 19 May 2012 16:20 (fourteen years ago)

Then booked a Hibs player a few mins later (not to mention the dodgy penalty)

Stoke 9/2

Serov devochka s persikami (nakhchivan), Saturday, 19 May 2012 17:46 (fourteen years ago)

Djibril Citté (onimo), Saturday, 19 May 2012 17:47 (fourteen years ago)

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 19 May 2012 17:50 (fourteen years ago)

how about?
West Ham 4
Blackpool 9
West Brom 9
Southampton 12
Reading 16
Wolves 16
Bolton 20
Blackburn 25

Djibril Citté (onimo), Saturday, 19 May 2012 17:50 (fourteen years ago)

not Owen

Djibril Citté (onimo), Saturday, 19 May 2012 17:50 (fourteen years ago)

Grant holt

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 19 May 2012 17:51 (fourteen years ago)

Holt is even money to join Sunderland.

Those odds are for Joseph Anthony "Joey" Barton.

Djibril Citté (onimo), Saturday, 19 May 2012 17:52 (fourteen years ago)

If QPR are really paying him 90k a week, he'll be going nowhere

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 19 May 2012 17:54 (fourteen years ago)

He's likely to miss a third of the season after his final game shenanigans. That's like £1m for sitting around unless QPR work out a way to fine him.

I have heard that Redknapp goes to Chelsea.

It has been said authoritatively but I feel that it will not happen.

The rest is close season.

the pinefox, Sunday, 20 May 2012 13:23 (fourteen years ago)

hello football fans

a small question out of mild curiosity. last night my twitter timeline EXPLODED in unanimous hatred for someone called john terry. i assume this is a footballer. what has he done to be so bad & hated?

(bear in mind i assume all footballers are one or all of racist/homophobic/rapists/thugs given that the only times they impinge on my consciousness are because of one of those things, so to be EXTRA hated he must be really awful)

liberté, égalité, beyoncé (lex pretend), Sunday, 20 May 2012 15:01 (fourteen years ago)

haha

lex

there is, iirc, a thread actually called 'john terry- why is he so bad & hated?'

i'm not sure it even explains so much as vents that hatred tho.

pet tommy & the barkhaters (darraghmac), Sunday, 20 May 2012 15:04 (fourteen years ago)

he is really, really awful- even for an english international millionaire professional footballer

pet tommy & the barkhaters (darraghmac), Sunday, 20 May 2012 15:05 (fourteen years ago)

And last night he got what he wanted most in all the world.

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 20 May 2012 15:06 (fourteen years ago)

it's v hard to explain the difference between Terry and yr conception of pro-footballers in general except to say that Terry seems unhealthily comfortable with his lifestyle choices more than most players i guess

Vermicious Knid A (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 20 May 2012 15:07 (fourteen years ago)

ah. ok. that thread's opening few posts are quite succinct. he really is that much worse than the rest? do even the fans of his club hate him? or maybe i just don't follow any of them. lol @ him being england CAPTAIN, why would they pick someone so unanimously reviled?

liberté, égalité, beyoncé (lex pretend), Sunday, 20 May 2012 15:08 (fourteen years ago)

most of his club's fans like him, many England supporters like him, we'd have to go into the weird socio-geographic rifts that run thru the notion of supporting England too.

Vermicious Knid A (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 20 May 2012 15:10 (fourteen years ago)

srsly don't believe lex has never heard the phrase 'john terry' before today given his sterling attempts to be the most extracurricular football player of all time with his forays into criminal justice, celebrity gossip etc

Serov devochka s persikami (nakhchivan), Sunday, 20 May 2012 15:22 (fourteen years ago)

going into that would be about the only thing that could make football interesting for me!

xp i may have done but footballers' names mostly don't stick in the mind, they all blur into one all-cheating all-racist thug

liberté, égalité, beyoncé (lex pretend), Sunday, 20 May 2012 15:30 (fourteen years ago)

maybe worth doing a 'the weird socio-geographic rifts that run thru the notion of supporting England' ILE thread

ambiguity of 'England' deliberate

Serov devochka s persikami (nakhchivan), Sunday, 20 May 2012 15:34 (fourteen years ago)

i'm sure we've had some debate about it on the England manager threads but i don't know if there's a full-on thread dedicated to it

Vermicious Knid A (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 20 May 2012 15:36 (fourteen years ago)

and possibly wider - english athletes in general? i have always found the assumption that english audiences are only interested in hearing about english sportspeople quite weird and frustrating

liberté, égalité, beyoncé (lex pretend), Sunday, 20 May 2012 15:36 (fourteen years ago)

possibly relevant in OLYMPICS YEAR

liberté, égalité, beyoncé (lex pretend), Sunday, 20 May 2012 15:36 (fourteen years ago)

also the thread on nationalism which was more US-centred i think. but i'm clearly in too funny a mood to argue about stuff today. don't know why tbh.

Vermicious Knid A (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 20 May 2012 15:37 (fourteen years ago)

Union Jacks almost automatically make me boo and i can't explain that fully either.

Vermicious Knid A (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 20 May 2012 15:38 (fourteen years ago)

He is the ur-cheating all-racist thug though. The thing that makes him particularly hateful is that he dresses this up in quasi-heroic for England and St George blather and whenever he gets called out on anything his usual response is "I didn't do it" even when it's caught on camera that he did.

Homosexual Satan Wasp (Matt DC), Sunday, 20 May 2012 15:40 (fourteen years ago)

oh god one of my friends delivered some a+++++ union jacks commentary on twitter the other day, if i knew how to screencap or anything i'd repost it somewhere

they're not as bad as st george's crosses obv but being surrounded by them in JUBILOLYMPICS YEAR is doing my blood pressure no good at all

liberté, égalité, beyoncé (lex pretend), Sunday, 20 May 2012 15:40 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, i enjoy most sports but the combination of the Monarchy, the Olympics and a kind of One Show all-in-this-together Britishness is making me half pukey half psycho at the mo

Vermicious Knid A (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 20 May 2012 15:42 (fourteen years ago)

lol @ him being england CAPTAIN, why would they pick someone so unanimously reviled?

he is especially representative imo

they all blur into one all-cheating all-racist thug

that thug is john terry, tbh

pet tommy & the barkhaters (darraghmac), Sunday, 20 May 2012 17:41 (fourteen years ago)

so would there be something in the theory that he is some sort of lightning rod focus for everything (fans) already hate about the sport? encapsulating all the negativity that you kind of have to ignore or do some suspension-of-disbelief shiz elsewhere?

liberté, égalité, beyoncé (lex pretend), Sunday, 20 May 2012 17:57 (fourteen years ago)

that's pretty astute

Number None, Sunday, 20 May 2012 17:58 (fourteen years ago)

I don't know that we ignore it, but yeah there might be something in that, especially in him wearing his ugliness/unthinkingness as a badge of pride.

There's also a monumental lack of self-awareness, combined with ruthless, a bit cheaty and morally-unmerited success, that is most distasteful. He reminds me a lot of Gordon Brown actually.

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 20 May 2012 18:02 (fourteen years ago)

yeah it's true, and i kinda why i find the visceral hatred of him either hysteric/hyperbolic or just lame like the LOL JT IS A CUNT stuff which is an insult to the proud tradition of lol football via ken c and a hoy hoy

Serov devochka s persikami (nakhchivan), Sunday, 20 May 2012 18:04 (fourteen years ago)

i was going to do a poll of most hateful golden generation player but i think ive brought enough rote negativism to the board as it is

Serov devochka s persikami (nakhchivan), Sunday, 20 May 2012 18:05 (fourteen years ago)

nobody who has seen the super grainy footage of lampard jr and ferdinand sr trying to coerce blowjobs out of girls in ayia napa circa 2000 could plausibly argue that terry is an altogether worse category to them

Serov devochka s persikami (nakhchivan), Sunday, 20 May 2012 18:11 (fourteen years ago)
