My fondest TV horror movie is Salem's Lot, which scared the everloving shit out of me at age seven (wtf were my parents thinking?). The scene with the knuckleheads driving the van with the coffin in the back… yikes!

Maybe we should start a Kindertrauma thread about too early childhood exposure to horror movies.

yeah i managed to see poltergeist when it came out (i was 9) and it fucked me up for weeks

which in retrospect i also should have voted for but my self-imposed voting rules wouldn't allow it

jjjusten hates little people. he didn't vote for fire walk with me either.

I saw Heavy Metal when I was five. MIND. BLOWN. Lots of other equally-inappropriate examples if I took the time to remember them.

I sometimes think my entire personality was formed by seeing things I shouldn't have at too young an age.

Have any of y'all ever seen The Reincarnation Of Peter Proud?

Hierophantiasis (Jon Lewis), Thursday, 10 May 2012 20:43 (twelve years ago) link

Even Dwarves Started Small is pretty horrifying

Roger Barfing (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 10 May 2012 22:33 (twelve years ago) link

i would have totally voted for that [dark night of the scarecrow] if i had remembered the name oh a week ago or so (although to be fair i havent seen it since i was a kid so i might be giving it too much credit)

OTM! i did remember it, but had the same reservations about the accuracy of my childhood recollections. and i didn't want to waste a vote. i do remember that they hyped the hell out of it in the weeks leading up, so i was super-excited to see it. 14 at the time, so it didn't really mess me up, but it was scary and cool (iirc). final scene still haunts me.

10. “Pour Some Sugar On Me” – Tom Cruise (contenderizer), Thursday, 10 May 2012 22:35 (twelve years ago) link

Even Dwarves Started Small always felt just a shade off seventies decadent Euro-horror. Like all it needs is three seconds of girls making out and it'd be there.

Is there a horror movie where a little person get's stabbed to death and then shot out of a cannon into a wood chipper? If so, that's probably the one jjjusten voted for because he hates the wee.

Results will begin next week, likely Tuesday or Wednesday. It'll be a seven-day unveil of six installments of 15 and then the top 10.

Some of my earliest scares were: The Bad Seed, Whatever Happened To Baby Jane and A Bucket Of Blood. Interesting to me, re-watching them as an adult, the levels of black humor and camp at work in these three.

When I was 6 or 7, there was a moment in Disney's Blackbeard's Ghost--a painting of a woman where you could see the eyes move--that terrified me. The Green Slime frightened me around the same time. The bar for scaring me has always been about as low as it gets.

The movie that fucked me up most as a kid (mentioned for, like, the fiftieth time): Testament.

My ultimate kindertrauma was when my idiot babysitter (a grown up! Not some dumb teenager!) let me watch The Excorcist on TV when I was ten. That was a long sleepless night of lying awake in bed, waiting for the devil to come and possess me. (She also let me watch The Deerhunter.)

Polly biscuit face (carl agatha), Friday, 11 May 2012 18:34 (twelve years ago) link

Trilogy Of Terror is on my ballot solely due to chittering doll kindertrauma, I have never gone near that flick again.

TV commercial for Amityville Horror literally ruined me for 2-3 years

Hierophantiasis (Jon Lewis), Friday, 11 May 2012 18:37 (twelve years ago) link

I probably mentioned this elsewhere but my most traumatic TV childhood experience was seeing this, age 9 (20 minutes of your time but worth sticking with it) :

Balloting is now officially, irreparably closed.

The ballot I was anticipating but afaik never received was Mr. Hal Jam's. :(

jungleous butterflies strange birds (Eric H.), Saturday, 12 May 2012 15:51 (twelve years ago) link

Aw, shame. But at least you got Morbs'.

emil.y, Saturday, 12 May 2012 15:57 (twelve years ago) link

the other thing wasn't work, either

World Congress of Itch (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 12 May 2012 15:59 (twelve years ago) link

As I'm tabulating the results, I can already see Morbs' ballot ousted something from the top 5 I really wanted to be in the top 5. Such wonton destructivism.

(Hint: It was Troll 2.)

jungleous butterflies strange birds (Eric H.), Saturday, 12 May 2012 16:05 (twelve years ago) link

DAMN IT. Well, as long as Troll is still a contender.
