untitled Brian Williams' daughter's project

buzza, Thursday, 3 May 2012 14:11 (twelve years ago) link

thomp, do u watch 30 Rock regularly?

Mordy, Thursday, 3 May 2012 14:14 (twelve years ago) link

yes, it's so much easier to remember 'that is non-celebrity brian williams' daughter' every time you hear the name of the character 'marnie' or see 'olivia williams' in the credits than it is to remember that the character is named 'marnie' or the actress 'olivia williams'

alternatively, it's straight up misogynist bullshit

i am genuinely curious! i think ilx needs to know more about how you feel about television

mordy i watched the first two and a half seasons and then found i didn't like it as much as i did when i started. i have been watching occasional episodes of this season and got fairly excited about the live one.

thomp, Thursday, 3 May 2012 14:20 (twelve years ago) link

i don't think we need to otm every vacuous accusation of misogyny.

Mordy, Thursday, 3 May 2012 14:21 (twelve years ago) link

there are 4 characters in the show. i most frequently hear them referred to as: brian william's daughter, david mamet's daughter, lena dunham, and the british one. the first two are the daughters of very famous ppl, ppl whose fame completely eclipses their progenies at this point in time. lena dunham's name is lena dunham. the british one's father's name is not 'the british.'

Mordy, Thursday, 3 May 2012 14:22 (twelve years ago) link

don't then, you condescending douchebag

Bad Company's Drummer's Daughter (stevie), Thursday, 3 May 2012 14:23 (twelve years ago) link

'daughter of britannia'

lag∞n, Thursday, 3 May 2012 14:24 (twelve years ago) link

I'll agree that referring to the cast of Girls as "such-and-such's daughter" is douchey, but...I guess referring to the parentage of the Beatles progeny who are talking about starting a band = misandry?

You Don't Throw Oranges On An Escalator (Deric W. Haircare), Thursday, 3 May 2012 14:25 (twelve years ago) link

don't then, you condescending douchebag

yeah, that's a totally tonally appropriate response. your dad is gay.

Mordy, Thursday, 3 May 2012 14:25 (twelve years ago) link

she is actually from a british girls clone called

Burdz

yes, you're right. that would be misandry. that is exactly correct.

nakhchivan, Thursday, 3 May 2012 14:27 (twelve years ago) link

this show was funded by grants set aside for white history month iirc

lag∞n, Thursday, 3 May 2012 14:28 (twelve years ago) link

'white history monthing' seems like it's actually a surprisingly helpful verb form

thomp, Thursday, 3 May 2012 14:29 (twelve years ago) link

i don't think we need to otm every vacuous accusation of misogyny.

if you don't see how this is condescending then you must be profoundly unaware of how much of a douchebag you seem

Bad Company's Drummer's Daughter (stevie), Thursday, 3 May 2012 14:31 (twelve years ago) link

yeah i think maybe mordy called ilx shrill but u know ilx can be shrill and mordy is profoundly aware of that

nakhchivan, Thursday, 3 May 2012 14:41 (twelve years ago) link

the casting should be applauded on esthetic grounds rather than as materiel for the usual nominative/communitarian ruction

nakhchivan, Thursday, 3 May 2012 14:44 (twelve years ago) link

i would totally be up for a two lights biopic in which every character was played by the illegitimate son of a brat pack member

nakhchivan, Thursday, 3 May 2012 14:45 (twelve years ago) link

i just realized the person being referred to in the "your dad is gay" line was the co-star of Bosom Buddies

s.clover, Thursday, 3 May 2012 15:02 (twelve years ago) link

the casting obliquely makes a case for nepotism as a rising tide that lifts all boats, cuz daughters and sons are equally favoured it actually has a 'progressive' component

and it works as a 'wry commentary', cuz here is a show about young NYC media hopefuls, but don't forget that the people playing them already have media careers at 22 or w/e thanks at least in some mesure to their connections

i dont think anyone is arguing they arent good enough for their roles? so yeah.....kirke especially is kinda brilliant tho but see tiny furniture more for that

idk how much this is the case in america, with its political dynasties and tradition of plutocratic pseudo-nobility but in the uk at any rate, there seems to be a return to values that (tacitly or otherwise) favour ~good breeding~ and nepotism is in especially fine form these days

nakhchivan, Thursday, 3 May 2012 15:28 (twelve years ago) link

Again we are in some looking glass world where being the daughter of Bad Company's drummer opens doors.

Andrew Farrell, Thursday, 3 May 2012 15:32 (twelve years ago) link

does anyone actually refer to her in a casual discussion of the show as Bad Company's drummer?

Mordy, Thursday, 3 May 2012 15:34 (twelve years ago) link

yyyyeah but not really, there are no bad fames any more than people care that your baronetcy came from a victorian opium magnate

nakhchivan, Thursday, 3 May 2012 15:34 (twelve years ago) link

theres no way the drummer of bad company could be any sort of industry connect guy

lag∞n, Thursday, 3 May 2012 15:36 (twelve years ago) link

yes mordy we know she's "the british one" let it go

Neil Young’s social media channels (some dude), Thursday, 3 May 2012 15:36 (twelve years ago) link

just looking thru this thread no one has ever referenced her by calling her the Bad Company's drummer's daughter except when discussing how lolzy it is that anyone would care about that particular fact.

Mordy, Thursday, 3 May 2012 15:36 (twelve years ago) link

i think in a way it's better for style section editors &c if u are like the child of someone from poison or ub40, if you are the kid of scott walker it is to be expected that you will be cool and it's not really a thing

nakhchivan, Thursday, 3 May 2012 15:38 (twelve years ago) link

holy shit, simon kirke? then surely more accurately she's Free's drummer's daughter

lag∞n, Thursday, 3 May 2012 15:42 (twelve years ago) link

she was referred to as Bad Company's Drummer's Daughter on that infamous rewrite of the poster that was posted on the internet somewhere

well they are both true

lag∞n, Thursday, 3 May 2012 15:43 (twelve years ago) link
