she just needed to be 'gently caressed', eh

thomp, Tuesday, 10 April 2012 16:58 (twelve years ago) link

in other words: she's sort of like an abused dog. she can't talk and if she couldn't doesn't really have an awful lot to say. drogo is her new owner and treats her far differently and this ultimately wins her over.

i haven't read the sequels yet but hoping that maybe these whole ideas come into play somehow, as they haven't thus far and daenery's is given the weird characteristic of being "the sympathetic queen" which - maybe isn't entirely *unlike* herself, but that she alloted visery's to abuse her for so long and in such a way that maybe she grew somewhat immune to it and the witness of it. i'm not making a lot of sense, but what i'm saying is that i can connect the dots in the book whereas hbo severed what i thought a pretty essential character trademark in the name of making people gasp on their couches

kelpolaris, Tuesday, 10 April 2012 17:02 (twelve years ago) link

they really did away with quite a bit of her early character development, where we see her choosing to shrug off the old Danaerys, like the freedom she experiences horseriding informs her newfound confidence in her relationship with Drogo

I really enjoy her character in the books, and i agree she's definitely been done a disservice in the writing of the tv series, at least early on. She seems to inhabit the strength now, but yeah where it comes from doesn't make sense without a lot of those early moments that they excised or changed.

VG very much otm, I was trying to explain to my wife the other night that the show isn't really doing her storyline justice so far.

the actress is p bad and blank too

lag∞n, Tuesday, 10 April 2012 17:07 (twelve years ago) link

are there viewer ratings for season 2 published? kinda curious if people are still watching this considering sean bean is forever absent

kelpolaris, Tuesday, 10 April 2012 17:07 (twelve years ago) link

tbh it sounds like it is doing a pretty good job of underlining and reinforcing what was already implausible and unpleasant about it

thomp, Tuesday, 10 April 2012 17:08 (twelve years ago) link

kel: people are still watching, and it retained pretty much all its viewers from the s2 premiere.

polyphonic, Tuesday, 10 April 2012 17:11 (twelve years ago) link

I don't mind the actress, she seems to have a lot of the characteristics of Dany, and she's handled the adversity storylines really well I think.

it's just a downer when there's a really good female character that gets the shaft because, idk, someone decided she's too pretty to be strong? who knows. I'm not really sure why the choice was made, but it's annoying.

That being said, I enjoy the show for the most part. And as long as they don't fuck with Arya's storyline we'll be cool.

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 10 April 2012 17:12 (twelve years ago) link

I think the biggest problem is that the majority of Dany's growth occurs in interior monologue, which is difficult to express in film.

They should make it like Herman's Head

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 10 April 2012 17:22 (twelve years ago) link

idk she's the leader of her own crew now and has dragons but the actress just doesn't embody any gravitas particularly, occasionally she'll yell BLOOD OF MY BLOOD or w/e but it's not that convincing, maybe this is supposed to be some transitional growin into her role period, or maybe the wiring is bad or w/e but that thread seems a lil vague atm

lag∞n, Tuesday, 10 April 2012 17:25 (twelve years ago) link

the wut do dragons eat line was funny

lag∞n, Tuesday, 10 April 2012 17:26 (twelve years ago) link

occasionally she'll yell BLOOD OF MY BLOOD or w/e

lol

also OUR ENEMIES WILL DIE SCREAMING

she's big on that one

dmr, Tuesday, 10 April 2012 17:27 (twelve years ago) link

I'm p pumped for when the dragons get bigger

lag∞n, Tuesday, 10 April 2012 17:28 (twelve years ago) link

I buy her as the character in the state she has currently reached, it's just that as pointed out above the show did not give us the connective tissue between 'timorously abused' and 'in the flush of power'.

tales from endoscopic oceans (Jon Lewis), Tuesday, 10 April 2012 17:29 (twelve years ago) link

exactly

how awesome are the baby dragons though
have we talked about that

because they are

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 10 April 2012 17:31 (twelve years ago) link

The dragons are great, and the compositing of them into the live action shots is good. Same can't be said about the wolves who are nowhere near as well integrated.

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 10 April 2012 17:33 (twelve years ago) link

S2 premiere higher than S1, second week retained virtually all viewers.

It has been renewed for a third season, though it took a week longer than HBO normally does (which is generally as soon as the ratings come in for the premiere episode).

Speculation that there were negotiations to try to lock down a fourth season, as Benioff/Weiss have made it clear they want to stretch Book 3 across two seasons.

I didn't think the wolf in the Jamie scene in ep 1 was very good, but the shot with the girl in ep 2 was pretty great imo.

stay in school if you want to kiw (Gukbe), Tuesday, 10 April 2012 17:37 (twelve years ago) link

why cant they just make all the episodes now, the whole seasons thing is tiring

lag∞n, Tuesday, 10 April 2012 17:38 (twelve years ago) link

I agree

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 10 April 2012 17:42 (twelve years ago) link

I wonder if had ten seasons in front of me now how long it would take me to watch them

lag∞n, Tuesday, 10 April 2012 17:43 (twelve years ago) link

I would call in sick and watch them all in one day

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 10 April 2012 17:44 (twelve years ago) link

day = whenever I started to whenever I finished
also I would purchase one (1) colostomy bag and a lot of snacks

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 10 April 2012 17:45 (twelve years ago) link

I watched the first season in one sitting

lag∞n, Tuesday, 10 April 2012 17:45 (twelve years ago) link

You could p much burn through 10 seasons in the hospital recovery time after a colectomy (10 days iirc)

tales from endoscopic oceans (Jon Lewis), Tuesday, 10 April 2012 17:47 (twelve years ago) link

I rewatched the first season in one sitting a couple of weeks before S2 started

I don't have the willpower to go, eh one is enough, I'll watch the next one tomorrow.
delayed gratification is for weirdos, lol

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 10 April 2012 17:48 (twelve years ago) link

Having not read the books, I've heard that book 3 is bonkers (and I think the later books ignore entire characters?) so I hope HBO allows them to write season 3 with the understand that it will be concluded in season 4. Or else I'd imagine that the creators are pulling their hair out right about now.

no but it has to go forever

I need wolves and dragons

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 10 April 2012 17:51 (twelve years ago) link

According to rumor GRRM has told Benioff/Weiss how the story ends in case Tim Tebow gives him a heart attack and kills him before he finishes the books.

Respectfully, Tyrese Gibson (Nicole), Tuesday, 10 April 2012 18:14 (twelve years ago) link

I feel very pessimistic about the chances for the books or tv show to reach a satisfying conclusion

Moodles, Tuesday, 10 April 2012 18:19 (twelve years ago) link

honestly if grrm croaks it'll prob bode well for the TV series tbh. if they've got a plot outline (and the plot is the the series main (sole?) strength), then they can go ahead and shoot stuff without having to wait for another five years in the making 1000page bloat fest

catbus otm (gbx), Tuesday, 10 April 2012 18:22 (twelve years ago) link

I have my doubts, because there are way too many separate story threads going on and I can't see how they can all be tied up. I hope I'm wrong, though. xp

How much time passes between Game of Thrones and A Dance of Dragons? Are the kids going to age too fast for the story?

yes

how long does it take dragons to grow up

lag∞n, Tuesday, 10 April 2012 18:25 (twelve years ago) link

xxpost

I think between those two is like 1 or 2 years

Moodles, Tuesday, 10 April 2012 18:25 (twelve years ago) link

Martin has actually said he wishes he made the kids older now

Number None, Tuesday, 10 April 2012 18:27 (twelve years ago) link

I agree with Nicole.

The book series is unusual to me because I've never read anything that was so utterly dependent on a big ending that ties up all the loose ends while blowing your mind at the same time. But by the end of Dance With Dragons, I started feeling very skeptical that this could actually be accomplished.

i hope this isnt a spoiler but dragons can basically continue growing for as long as they live, as long as they're not confined to a space that will limit their size.

My Little Pony has confirmed this, yes.

so why were the last dragons small and deformed? xpost

stay in school if you want to kiw (Gukbe), Tuesday, 10 April 2012 18:31 (twelve years ago) link

They were inbred.

Moodles, Tuesday, 10 April 2012 18:31 (twelve years ago) link

and they didn't let them out to play

Number None, Tuesday, 10 April 2012 18:32 (twelve years ago) link

aah. were they trying to keep a bloodline or were they just running out of dragons?

stay in school if you want to kiw (Gukbe), Tuesday, 10 April 2012 18:32 (twelve years ago) link

i heard the last dragons had the power of the glow

polyphonic, Tuesday, 10 April 2012 18:32 (twelve years ago) link

basically i was just wondering if Dany's dragons are proper dragons or those little fucked up ones. like she finally gets it to fly up and its about to kill someone and then it just coughs up a puff of smoke and sheepishly shrugs.

stay in school if you want to kiw (Gukbe), Tuesday, 10 April 2012 18:33 (twelve years ago) link

the old dragons were kept chained up in a keep, so their size potential was limited
