yes. My wife and I were both like, "what?"

so glad that patchface isn't in this

I cannot host as my wife hates Walker (latebloomer), Monday, 9 April 2012 02:57 (twelve years ago) link

Taking this less and less seriously as the show progresses. It really does seem to be targeted at 14-year old boys.

Jon takes after Ned, doesn't he?

btw the tumblrs are whining about the show departing from the books, those big babbies should be careful Craster doesn't leave them out in the wilderness.

I haven't read the books, but I hope they do depart from them because goodness gracious this is too sprawling at the moment. I know it probably has to be that way for a bit, but I'm hoping it coalesces at some point and we have a coming together.

Still glad that they keep moments like Robert's bastard's "I sold armour" line.

lol yes that was A+++, both of Gendry's scenes were great.

im happy when it departs because i dont know what exactly is going to happen and also tbh the books do peter out after 3 so if they're planning on fixing that, im onboard

A Little Princess btw (s1ocki), Monday, 9 April 2012 05:13 (twelve years ago) link

yeah the second ep kinda sucked to be honest. it was like they decided they need to show how cruel and ugly and dehumanising this world is, particularly to women, and "they did you notice that the first time? COS IF NOT HERE IS ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF IT! oh you missed that one did you? WELL HERE'S ANOTHER EXAMPLE AND IT'S EVEN LESS SUBTLE, HOW ABOUT MORE ROUGH ANAL SEX? LOOK AT HOW THESE PEOPLE ARE MERE OBJECTS, HER, HER AND HER TOO, LOOK."

can someone tell me what the change from the books was

I don't think Stannis and Melisandre were sleeping together in the books. In fact Stannis comes across as very non-sexual, he's married and has a daughter so he's obviously had sex with his wife at least once but probably only out of duty. It seemed out of character for him.

Dust, Monday, 9 April 2012 12:41 (twelve years ago) link

Nah, it is kind of implied that they're doing it, just very obliquely. Much like Renly and Loras.

Number None, Monday, 9 April 2012 12:51 (twelve years ago) link

Yes, but it is somewhat alluded to in the books. I forget who, but they commented on Stannis's disinterest in/impatience with his wife, and all the time he has for the younger, more beautiful Melisandre.

But then again he doesn't have a wife or family in this does he?

gyac, Monday, 9 April 2012 12:54 (twelve years ago) link

Melisandre mentioned his wife being locked up in her tower

Number None, Monday, 9 April 2012 12:54 (twelve years ago) link

Ty, I haven't seen the second episode (or missed that from the first!)

gyac, Monday, 9 April 2012 12:57 (twelve years ago) link

My reading was that Stannis was desperately keen on a son, not so much horny for that bod.

abcfsk, Monday, 9 April 2012 13:07 (twelve years ago) link

it is acknowledged or at least very strongly implied that Stannis and Melisandre got it on in the books at least on one occasion. i mean, i can't say anything without giving a kinda-not-really-spoiler-y detail, but it is right in there. i don't think anything is said about stannis looking to get a male heir thru her tho. certainly her intentions are different.

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 9 April 2012 13:23 (twelve years ago) link

anyway, in terms of the big 'change', i think ppl are referring to the very end?

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 9 April 2012 13:25 (twelve years ago) link

can someone tell me what the change from the books was?

the last scene w/ jon snow didn't happen in the books as far as i remember

ciderpress, Monday, 9 April 2012 13:29 (twelve years ago) link

I believe on the Stannis et Melisandre question, that he dreams a sort of murky, magical, succubus-like encounter, and she takes that from him without his full consent. It IS mentioned often that she's taking the Stannis' wife's place at his side, but that's like a transfer of power & authority, not a sign of a sexual liaison.

lag∞n, Monday, 9 April 2012 14:12 (twelve years ago) link

i seem to remember them being quite clear that melisandre was getting it on with stannis. in one of the later books someone says that she warms his bed or something like that, which kinda makes it clear what they're doing.

Hm I don't remember that being specifically told to us by a reliable narrator? If another character says it, it's just as likely to be their unreliable PoV.

is there a spoilery thread?

diamonddave85, Monday, 9 April 2012 16:51 (twelve years ago) link

the book threads are spoilery, though if you haven't read all 5 books i would avoid them

ciderpress, Monday, 9 April 2012 17:06 (twelve years ago) link

anyone watched ep2? more like game of porn

the brothel keyhole-blowjob --> wiping-off-the-corner-of-the-mouth --> deep kiss with new client scene was way over the top

dmr, Monday, 9 April 2012 18:17 (twelve years ago) link

^ and that sort of thing doesn't usually bother me that much. I mean, come on, the wiping the mouth this was just gross.

wolf kabob (ENBB), Monday, 9 April 2012 18:19 (twelve years ago) link

tbh until just now I thought I had read too much into that bit because I didn't think they would have actually shown that. Gah.

wolf kabob (ENBB), Monday, 9 April 2012 18:20 (twelve years ago) link

yeah it took me a minute to register that they were really going there

dmr, Monday, 9 April 2012 18:29 (twelve years ago) link

even some of the dialogue like what that prisoner said to arya about putting a stick up her anus or whatev, it's a bit gleefully gross.

I guess I'm too desensitised to really find that ott. Genuine lolz at the chain of people spying on other people - as well as that subtext of the ways in which Littlefinger and others use spying/voyeurism etc.

Thinking back this was pretty strong thematically, but I didn't really appreciate that so much while watching it due to jumping from story to story.

stay in school if you want to kiw (Gukbe), Monday, 9 April 2012 18:49 (twelve years ago) link

the thing about the wiping of her mouth that made it gross to me was that it was like identifying her as "look, she even needs a man to wipe her mouth for her, she is literally nothing more than a tool for fucking"

most of the other fuck scenes in the episode at least involved a major character or had some plot purpose, I think that's one reason it seemed gratuitous

dmr, Monday, 9 April 2012 18:53 (twelve years ago) link

but that's the point, surely. that's the set-up for Littlefinger's little speech to Roz.

The first part (re: dream succubus) is my impression as well, though I do think believe they eventually start doing it, like, carnally.

Davos/Saan scene was worth the whole ep in my opinion

'he cuts off your fingers - and you fall in love with him!'

Brakhage, Tuesday, 10 April 2012 01:13 (twelve years ago) link

^^

Didn't care for the sullen way the actress played Yara/Asha, who in my mind was much more boisterous.
