How will he make more money, though?

I assume he has plans to sell the property?

two weeks pass...

where should i stay in san francisco? i need to get to the mission district relatively easily/quickly at rush hour each morning. am looking at union squareish area bc it's very close to transit... any other recommendations?

tehresa, Friday, 16 March 2012 19:21 (twelve years ago) link

union square would be fine for your purposes but it won't be cheap

civic center/south of market or tenderloin

sarahell, Friday, 16 March 2012 19:47 (twelve years ago) link

I wouldn't really recommend the tenderloin. I mean, I spend time there and I have friends there but y'know some people might be alarmed by preponderance of speedfreaks/crackheads, trannywhores, random stabbings, crazed homeless people etc

Agree. Plus Tenderloin is not terribly fun to walk around at night (reinforced for me after seeing a show at GAMH last night.)\

Any reason why you don't want to just stay in the Mission? Upper Market near Castro/Church is also a good spot.

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Friday, 16 March 2012 19:56 (twelve years ago) link

yeah was gonna suggest the Church/Castro axis, there's decent B&Bs around there

otoh if you are comfortable with the prospect of seeing someone take a shit in the street at any given time of day, by all means hit up the Tendo!

mission hotels didn't seem particularly great from the online reviews. can anyone recommend a good one?

tehresa, Friday, 16 March 2012 20:01 (twelve years ago) link

my mother-in-law stayed at some B&B near us that seemed pretty decent, I think it was on Van Ness. Lemme look it up and see if I can find it.

I think it was this one

how do you feel about doilies lol

i do not wish to stay at a b&b for a week! hah. maybe one night. but i'm going for a work trip so i think it would get... awkward. i dunno, for a week, i guess i want more amenities that a hotel offers like a gym, my own bathroom, etc.

tehresa, Friday, 16 March 2012 20:06 (twelve years ago) link

there are cheap hotels around Union Square too. They really run the gamut.

lou reed scott walker monks niagra (chinavision!), Friday, 16 March 2012 20:10 (twelve years ago) link

yeah the hotels in the Mission aren't gonna meet your needs. if it's a work thing and they're payin for the stay, Union Square or or the SOMA hotels are best for that kind of thing

xp

union square plus a few blocks to the north, a few blocks to the east, a few blocks to the south, and like 1.5 blocks to the west keeps out out of the tenderloin

lou reed scott walker monks niagra (chinavision!), Friday, 16 March 2012 20:12 (twelve years ago) link

what are hotels in the mission? aside from really ratty looking places with signs that say they offer color tv.

lou reed scott walker monks niagra (chinavision!), Friday, 16 March 2012 20:12 (twelve years ago) link

those are the only ones

I assume it's a zoning thing

what are hotels in the mission? aside from really ratty looking places with signs that say they offer color tv.

this is the impression i was getting from searches. glad it's not just me!

tehresa, Friday, 16 March 2012 20:16 (twelve years ago) link

ok, another q: is there a relatively quick/easy way to get to santa cruz other than renting a car?

tehresa, Friday, 16 March 2012 20:16 (twelve years ago) link

I had some cheap friends stay at a place on bush st. that was essentially a "cheap hotel" but not a flop. there are a number of places like that around there. that puts you fairly in the center of things. hotel astoria maybe? or grant hotel? these kinds of places are all similar, I think.

lou reed scott walker monks niagra (chinavision!), Friday, 16 March 2012 20:18 (twelve years ago) link

no; i think there is a train/bus combo you can take

sarahell, Friday, 16 March 2012 20:18 (twelve years ago) link

yes, Greyhound from Transbay terminal

hbo with a shotgun (admrl), Friday, 16 March 2012 20:18 (twelve years ago) link

my brother took some hellish multi-hour bus trip that I would never advise

lou reed scott walker monks niagra (chinavision!), Friday, 16 March 2012 20:19 (twelve years ago) link

Greyhound's gonna make a LOT of stops

the other option is caltrain to san jose then amtrak bus

sarahell, Friday, 16 March 2012 20:20 (twelve years ago) link

you can take Caltrans to somewhere that has a bus route that connects to Santa Cruz iirc. it was painful the one time I did it. Just rent the car, it's like an hour/hour and a half to drive it (provided you aren't going during rush hour)

xp

yes but then you get to see San Jose, Foster City, Los Gatos etc

xxp

lou reed scott walker monks niagra (chinavision!), Friday, 16 March 2012 20:22 (twelve years ago) link

Los Gatos is pretty posh iirc

sarahell, Friday, 16 March 2012 20:22 (twelve years ago) link

Do you hear me knockin'?

hbo with a shotgun (admrl), Friday, 16 March 2012 20:23 (twelve years ago) link

If you're close to Market St. in SOMA or Union Square, BART will get you to 16th St. or 24th St. fairly quickly depending on the scheduled trains.

I know 4lly stayed here once - http://www.hotelmilanosf.com/

Transit-wise, it's pretty central. It's been ages but I used to know their chief engineer and I long ago worked on a photo shhot that used their business center as an office for a week.

L'ennui, cette maladie de tous les (Michael White), Friday, 16 March 2012 20:39 (twelve years ago) link

Union Sq is probably your best bet, anywhere near Powell Station is properly central. When are you here?

kinder, Friday, 16 March 2012 23:20 (twelve years ago) link

is a FAP in order? been a long time

thanks, all. I'll be there mid-april, exact dates tbc but roughly 4/7-13. kinder, I didn't realize you were an sf ilxor!

tehresa, Saturday, 17 March 2012 02:58 (twelve years ago) link

I am! For the time being, anyhow. I was wondering if you guys ever fapped, I think there was one a couple of years ago? but I hadn't been here long also I was scared....

two weeks pass...

I just moved to the bay area. Staying in temporary digs in temescal until they're done with the carpet at our awesome new place near where the mission/dubocetriagnle/Castro meet (right by sushi zone).

I'm always looking for more cool shit to do in the area. Already have plans to check out pancakes and noise on Sundays at the lab and maybe make it a semi regular thing. I saw 222 hyde's radioactivity night listed on the east bay express and tried to go on Friday but the bartender said she'd never heard of such a thing. Come to this thread to see that a couple ilxors djed that night once upon a time. Anything like this still go on? Anybody got any cool shows/gigs coming up?

Anybody got tips for a good mission bar crawl that starts closer to the outer mission and ends by market?

I <3 SF bars

Blomqvist, Jesper (admrl), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 19:57 (twelve years ago) link

El Rio near Mission & Valencia (south of Cesar Chavez) is a good place to start, great outdoor area. Then there's Phone Booth on 25th/South Van Ness which I like for some reason even though it's small. You can pretty much smoke in there if that's your thing. Medjool on Mission/21st isn't amazing but the roof terrace is cool. Homestead on 19th/Folsom is good too, and I've ended up in Beauty Bar on 19th/Mission a few times (gets crowded and a bit shitty later on though ime).

And Make-out room is fun!

kinder, Tuesday, 3 April 2012 20:01 (twelve years ago) link

Does it live up to its name, I bet not

I prefer the Throw-up Room on Guerrero

Blomqvist, Jesper (admrl), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 20:02 (twelve years ago) link

Pop's on 24th is enjoyably dive-y, a few blocks from my friends' rad record store.

sarahell, Tuesday, 3 April 2012 20:04 (twelve years ago) link

do they still have the saturday night "northern soul" thing at the elbo room? that was always big fun.

the late great, Tuesday, 3 April 2012 20:07 (twelve years ago) link

and also on the route

the late great, Tuesday, 3 April 2012 20:08 (twelve years ago) link

hate to admit but i always enjoyed the backyard at zeitgeist, even though it's like the portlandia funhouse-mirror version of SF
