I really like yr album cover design, cek, it's gorgeous and serene...

Sorry I spoiled the thread but I couldn't resist showing of Ophelia. :-D

<I>nat's cheating - that was a joint effort 8)</I>

Ah yes, I admit she's *co-designed*.

Kate, I am superjealous of your drawing skills!

Honestly tho, Nath, you did nine months plus of post-production work.

tiny photos too!

it's a 30's building so we wanted to give it a kind of cruise liner/ art deco feel without doing a pastiche.

jed_, Friday, 15 June 2007 17:42 (sixteen years ago) link

Great banquette tufting, jed!

I DIED, Friday, 15 June 2007 17:45 (sixteen years ago) link

thanks I DIED, i like yours.

the banquet is actually a bit of a disappointment to me - the buttoning should be deeper but hey, you get what you can afford. also i'm quite pleased that there are actually more seats than there were originally but the place looked absolutely full of chairs before.

jed_, Friday, 15 June 2007 17:49 (sixteen years ago) link

Love the flier, Abbott.

StanM, Friday, 15 June 2007 17:58 (sixteen years ago) link

Abbott, that flier is awesome. Nice tits!

I DIED, where is your restaurant? Does it exist yet?

caek, Friday, 15 June 2007 21:27 (sixteen years ago) link

Those restaurants are both Washington DC area, one's in permitting right now and the other's in construction. I don't really care for either of those project phases.

i'm surprised dom earworm hasn't got you to do art for him shakey

electricsound, Friday, 15 June 2007 23:17 (sixteen years ago) link

I wouldn't say no, but he was, um uncommunicative when we tried to get something together in the past (previous incarnation of the band was slated to be one of earworm's final releases - didn't work out)

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 15 June 2007 23:22 (sixteen years ago) link

GAH you guys are all fucking awesome. I hade no idea you did (extremely spectacular) arts, Shakey Mo.

Yr mouf painting is incredible (and incredibly creepy) Jeff.

And to answer yr question, PP, it was just with some inky ball point, like a midline-price 12-pack kind you get from office supply stores, and a Sharpie to fill in the blacker fields. Same as comics, yeah. If I want to print or scan them, I usually just photocopy them first, which yields crisp lines & perfectly even black fields w/out scratchy pen/overlapping Sharpie marks.

Abbott, Friday, 15 June 2007 23:22 (sixteen years ago) link

I didn't get to photocopy that one (it's the original), so it still has sharpie overlap lines. :(

Abbott, Friday, 15 June 2007 23:24 (sixteen years ago) link

Shakey Mo, I am totally going to be in touch shortly.

caek, Friday, 15 June 2007 23:32 (sixteen years ago) link

In the meantime Shakey, can you say a bit about how you draw your images? Pen and ink + colours in Photoshop? I am curious about the mechanics of it.

Pleasant Plains, Friday, 15 June 2007 23:45 (sixteen years ago) link

TOM, re: blowing up, did you try Live Trace yet? It might do a good job with your line art. See, e.g. http://blog.wired.com/geekdad/2007/05/last_year_we_de.html

caek, Friday, 15 June 2007 23:46 (sixteen years ago) link

I've gotta go right now but briefly process is - pencil sketch->lightbox + black old-school rapidograph pen->scan into photoshop->fill in colors

altho sometimes I'll add the colors prior to scanning and kinda work with those in photoshop

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 15 June 2007 23:55 (sixteen years ago) link

(there's also a fair amount of collage work)

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 15 June 2007 23:55 (sixteen years ago) link

please!

caek, Friday, 15 June 2007 23:58 (sixteen years ago) link

Thanks guys, really appreciate the feedback. Trying to do more of the star wars droid things, something that people recognise. And generally looking at droids and spaceships from other famous movies/tv shows.

I'm dying to do a painting of the red dwarf ship, hard to find a decent image that has the detail though.

Great stuff, Ste. Here's the final portrait from my class, she looks a bit too mean, hair is too flat, etc etc. Definitely want to get more impressionistic in future.

Drop soap, not bombs (Ste), Thursday, 18 December 2014 15:57 (nine years ago) link

Particularly Judgement On Gotham, which was the first time I'd seen his work, and then further on his Doom Patrol covers. So slick and natural.

Drop soap, not bombs (Ste), Thursday, 18 December 2014 16:07 (nine years ago) link

judgement on gotham was the first time i saw bisley too. got it for xmas and it blew my 11-year-old mind.

bizarro gazzara, Thursday, 18 December 2014 16:18 (nine years ago) link

I've watched some fascinating interviews with Simon, where he talks about how when he paints it's almost subconscious, and that if he comes out of that trance then the lines he's drawing just lose their power.

Totally on board with that.

Drop soap, not bombs (Ste), Thursday, 18 December 2014 16:33 (nine years ago) link

Hey Ledge, did you ever get that dip pen you mentioned? Been practising with one myself this week.

A little bit scratchy, probably a cheap nib, but really impressed with the type of natural line it produces. Also wanted to use better ink, not keen on those design pen inks (always say their waterproof but hmm not sure) and my fountain pen (with converter-cartridge) just struggled to get the ink flowing and always clogged up.
