Yeah, I read further and noticed that. Barry Ween was not bad as an original thing, right?

I actually saw the show AFTER having seen some of his comics work and was impressed because a lot of dudes I know who are a lot like him crank out much worse material

mh, Thursday, 7 July 2011 15:24 (twelve years ago) link

then Puck called him out during a reunion show using the same argument and I had to ask myself some difficult questions

otm, when you're on the side of The Puck then it's time to look within

my incredulity at Judd's comics career has little to do with the quality of his work and everything to do with his portrayal on The Real World

although he is responsible for creating resurrecting Jason Todd as THE CLITORIS, er I mean RED HOOD

someone would end up dead

liquid television kicked ass

the first couple beavis and butthead clips really spoke to me

goole, Thursday, 7 July 2011 15:46 (twelve years ago) link

also there was the serial one with puppets about some kind of tough talking stripper/killer/biker chick? wow that could have been huge these days with all this zac snyder shit we're dealing with

I really think about 75% of my antipathy towards living in the countryside is due to growing up 15 minutes outside of the perimeter that had access to cable

do we prefer the early Aeon Fluxes -- where she always ended up a splat -- or the Aeon Fluxes with something resembling a plot?!?

Notes

A deleted scene shows the woman Trevor was kissing while Æon was falling slamming a door between her pelvic area repeatedly.

How is this not the obvious winner?

might need to be drunk for this.

"there was the serial one with puppets about some kind of tough talking stripper/killer/biker chick?"

this was called winter steele or something and it was pretty bad. watching it was like an extended version of that guard licking linda hamilton's face in T2.

haha thx

wikipedia of course has extensive listings of every episode of liquid television

much trips down memory lane had by me

goole, Thursday, 21 July 2011 19:43 (twelve years ago) link

did you guys ever see the PEDRO ZAMORA tv movie?!

It was very surreal. There were actors playing Puck and Judd and shit and they kind of had scene-for-scene re-enactments of key pivotal plot points from the show but it was so surreal to see actors re-enacting reality TV but also being really, really bad actors. I can't explain it. You must rent this movie solely for the Real World shit.

do they recreate the scene where judd meets dave eggers?

apichathong song (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Thursday, 21 July 2011 22:35 (twelve years ago) link

DC: Do you still keep in touch with Dave Eggers (author of "A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius")?

Judd Winick: No I don’t. I was quite surprised to find myself in his book, but Dave was very fair, very complementary, and very kind. He could have been cruel, and no one would have faulted him. I did send him a letter and a copy of Pedro and Me.

hardcore oatmeal (Jordan), Thursday, 21 July 2011 22:39 (twelve years ago) link

Judd is purple and Dave is yellow.

polyphonic, Thursday, 21 July 2011 22:42 (twelve years ago) link

wait but how did they meet in the first place? i feel like i'm missing a crucial part of the real world mythos here.

apichathong song (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Thursday, 21 July 2011 22:42 (twelve years ago) link

apparently he interviewed to be on the show? idk, i never read "a heartbreaking work..."

hardcore oatmeal (Jordan), Thursday, 21 July 2011 22:45 (twelve years ago) link

apparently judd beat him out for a spot on that season!

apichathong song (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Thursday, 21 July 2011 22:46 (twelve years ago) link

the Judd they cast in the TV movie is kinda hot

homosexual II, Thursday, 21 July 2011 22:46 (twelve years ago) link

Judd was on a job hunt sending comics to the SF Chronicle? and also to Eggers' Might magazine which was really big at the time.
Judd did land the chronicle gig I think. but not Might magazine. But somehow Eggers also met Puck because in the book, he describes him as "ollie ollie 720 frontside grind" or something.

Philip Nunez, Thursday, 21 July 2011 22:48 (twelve years ago) link

the fake Puck is so awful

homosexual II, Thursday, 21 July 2011 22:48 (twelve years ago) link

eggers made it to the final round for that season and theres a long section in the book where he imagines an interview w/ an mtv producer

& then puck (and maybe judd too?) did a photoshoot for might magazine when eggers was running it

max, Thursday, 21 July 2011 22:50 (twelve years ago) link

Judd's comic strips were so awful.

tylerw, Thursday, 21 July 2011 22:53 (twelve years ago) link

apparently judd beat him out for a spot on that season!

Now I'm imagining some alternate universe scenario where Eggers was on the show...think of all we might have been spared.

Anyhoo:

GOD I REMEMBER THAT SEX IN THE 90s!

Other remember when shit: peak-era Dan Cortese as a Burger King spokesman, during that weird time in 1993 when BK served popcorn and tried to be a respectable restaurant, where the surly teenaged employees would actually deliver the food to your table.

Also: with Red Johnny & the Round Guy, the Round Guy quit show-biz and Red Johnny went back to his real name and started doing voice over work. Later, he hooked up with Matt Groening and is now best known for voicing a certain alcoholic robot.

I worshipped Liquid TV, to the point of taping entire seasons of it. This was during the years when I was a massive tapehead and my folks would buy me like 10-packs of blank VHS for christmas and it was awesome. It would take me a few more years before I got into actual decent music(I was a big Aerosmith fan at the time), but...

They gave Alex Winter his own sketch comedy show in the summer of '91, around the same time Bogus Journey came out. Eddie the Flying Gimp and Willard Shrek the convenience store guy are still referenced by my brother & I to this day.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GvJ9qqyKYEE

What was the name of the one sorta-hott alt-chick on RW: Montana or something? I can't even remember which mid-90s season she was on, except that she showed up in the Road Rules competition a few times.

Crazed Mister Handy (kingfish), Friday, 22 July 2011 03:20 (twelve years ago) link

man, youtube really does have a lot of crazy 90s mtv shit
