Unlike the others' his instrumental role will never change, since drummers can usually only play one instrument.

Nicknamed by a few "The Egyptian Dude" because of the 'ahkh' in his name, Benny actually isn't Egyptian at all.

i had the pleasure of seeing the sharks once but due to my then practice of eschewing beer in favor of an equal volume of gin and kenan bringing a pint of beam with him i remember surprisingly little of the evening. except someone got arrested and it wasn't me.

river wolf, Monday, 16 April 2007 18:00 (seventeen years ago) link

I might as well ask this here before taking it to IMM:

Any of you guys have any views on weird arse guitar tunings? My octave mando feeds back too damn much for how loud the band is and I need a solid body instrument. Thinking of tuning a 12 sting up CGDAEB or CCGDAE. Any views?

Ed, Monday, 16 April 2007 18:02 (seventeen years ago) link

EEEGBAE

Mr. Que, Monday, 16 April 2007 18:02 (seventeen years ago) link

i was thinking about tuning my lap to either a DADDAD or to a chromatic tuning.

...but i think i'll wait until i know how to play it first

river wolf, Monday, 16 April 2007 18:03 (seventeen years ago) link

incidentally, the show at ronny's on saturday night was INSANITY. they took in $700 at the door (at least that's what they told the bands so who knows how much they really took) which translates into 140 people just in the music room. you could not move in the bar. weird mix of indie doofus hipsters, garage kids, and street punks. flying beer cans and elbows to the head and mike from c0c0c0ma getting so drunk that he was playing his farfisa with his fist until he decided he just couldn't play at all.

oh, and there was a deer skull with mounted antlers being tossed around too.

I need to ponder this 12 string issue further. Are you micing the octave mando, or using a pickup?

I tuned to DDDDDD the other week, with some of the strings just slightly out of tune from others tuned to the same octave to get a neat warbly sound.

n/a, Monday, 16 April 2007 18:08 (seventeen years ago) link

see, what's funny is that i thought you were pointing me to the first article

coulda been good but it was over before it started.

chicago kevin, Monday, 16 April 2007 18:08 (seventeen years ago) link

Ours was pretty rammed (although they keep the numbers down for the space in the lumi) they must have taken £1500 on the door. Although we stuck out like a sore thumb, the sound is great there and the soundman was really on fire. Not sure how many of the audience got us and smith's fans certainly don't throw beer cans or animal body parts.

The octave mando has a pickup, I now have two because my first go with just a mic resulted in no one hearing me at all. I was looking at this bellzouki thing anyway. This saturday I'm going to give myself a headphone mix on the mando and laptop on stage and nothing in the monitors and see how loud we can get it in the room.

Ed, Monday, 16 April 2007 18:09 (seventeen years ago) link

Richard Lloyd, assistant professor at Vanderbilt University and author of a book on Wicker Park art and commerce, said that the economic and cultural future of Logan Square is pretty open-ended.

"It's tricky to say whether this is benign or malign," he wrote of the neighborhood's progression in an e-mail. "Both artists and working class Latinos could end up getting squeezed, so maybe in ten years it's LaSalle Street market makers and lawyers haunting the bar."

Ha ha ha ha.
