phoenix, i bought a gq and the cologne ads were killing me. being the worst smelling thing on a plane is quite an achievement.

I miss the days of being able to just wander around an airport. Each time I go through LAX, I get "locked" inside the international terminal which is basically just one long hallway with a newstand, a duty-free shop, and a Burger King.
― Pleasant Plains, Friday, 7 December 2007 17:35 (sixteen years ago) link
Hi, JBR!
― Laurel, Friday, 7 December 2007 17:36 (sixteen years ago) link
LAX does have some of those caged in smoking areas that you can access even after you have been locked down. which is better then most
― carne asada, Friday, 7 December 2007 17:38 (sixteen years ago) link
hi laurel! i'm sitting in a corner of the terminal and a couple of cute australian kids are playing with matchbox cars in front of me.
― get bent, Friday, 7 December 2007 17:43 (sixteen years ago) link
St Louis has smoking fishbowls, too! They're actually better than usual, b/c they're not completely enclosed so the 4th side is open to the terminal, they must just have really efficient ventilation systems (b/c you can't smell any smoke outside 'em).
The best is still Minneapolis, though -- the smoking section is attached to a honest-to-god BAR, and it's just around the corner and down the hall from the best used bookstore I have ever been in.
― Laurel, Friday, 7 December 2007 17:45 (sixteen years ago) link
I liked Minneapolis with their tiny little escalators.
― Pleasant Plains, Friday, 7 December 2007 17:51 (sixteen years ago) link
memphis has a bar you can still smoke in. in terminal c i think, i know it's not in the same terminal as american airlines.

Nice BBQ place, too.
― Pleasant Plains, Friday, 7 December 2007 18:00 (sixteen years ago) link
I will be in two airports today. Except they're Orange County's and Oakland's, and therefore there is nothing to say about them.
― Ned Raggett, Friday, 7 December 2007 18:06 (sixteen years ago) link
I am eating bbq in a terminal.
I'm not in an airport, tho.

I remember standing outside Oakland's airport, trying to work the machine that gives you a bus ticket to the BART station at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum. It ate all my quarters and I just stood there wondering what I was going to do when the bus came. (It finally spit out a ticket saying that I still owed a dollar.)
I got on the bus and sort of spazzed out trying to explain to the driver that I had put in the full fare into the machine, but it had short-changed me.
She responded by saying "It's cool! Relax, man. Have a seat." That was the moment that California won me over.

my favorite airport in the LA area has got to be Long Beach. that place is great
― carne asada, Friday, 7 December 2007 18:49 (sixteen years ago) link
Little Rock's cool since they added the video screen showing weary passengers stomping up the departure corridor.
― Pleasant Plains, Friday, 7 December 2007 19:08 (sixteen years ago) link
oh that is awesome!
― tehresa, Friday, 7 December 2007 19:09 (sixteen years ago) link
I walk like a monkey, staring straight into the camera, when I'm walking through there.
― Pleasant Plains, Friday, 7 December 2007 19:20 (sixteen years ago) link
long beach is awesome, burbank also awesome. lax = not awesome, except for the encounter.
jbr -> nyc

I almost just asked where your layovers were before remembering that those some cities have direct flights to places.
― Pleasant Plains, Friday, 7 December 2007 21:55 (sixteen years ago) link
my layover was in denver (frontier's hub). it was fine; i was able to get some edible food at a sitdown "bistro."

i dropped off a friend at the Little Rock airport last night. it looked pretty cool. i didn't get to see the aforementioned screen though.

It's in the new waiting area since you can't go into the actual terminals anymore.
Another Little Rocker?
― Pleasant Plains, Saturday, 8 December 2007 16:57 (sixteen years ago) link
nah. I was over there for work for the last couple of weeks. Little Rock is OK! I'd never spent any time there, other than passing through going to TX. Perhaps a little on the sleepy side, but they seem to have done a lot of things right that Mem got wrong.

Tomorrow I go from SNA to SEA. The best thing about SNA = the "FAA approved" takeoffs for reduced noise. Basically wind the plane up hard on the tarmac, release the brakes, zoom sharply up to a couple thousand feet, then cut the engines and coast out over the ocean. Eventually the engines get kicked back in and away you go.

LR copied Memphis and put a damn trolley downtown that nobody ever rides.
We also have a submarine that the mayor desperately wants everyone to see. Maybe when Raggett comes to town.
― Pleasant Plains, Saturday, 8 December 2007 17:37 (sixteen years ago) link
yeah it's dumber than shit (as is ours), but at least it's more or less confined to Markham(?) in the downtown mall area. they extended ours (which is embarrassingly empty) off of Main, through the medical district where it finally peters out in Midtown, for no other apparent reason than to completely muck up the traffic flow on Madison. The way I go to work. Brilliant.

i am not in an airport yet, but will be soon. i just checked and my flight appears to be delayed approximately an hour. should i go later than i planned, or just sit through the delay in case it somehow ends up leaving earlier?
― tehresa, Thursday, 20 December 2007 20:50 (sixteen years ago) link
My dad recommended I go on time. Now it's even more delayed and I'm drinking a pint glass sized gin and tonic at the airport chilis oh my
― tehresa, Thursday, 20 December 2007 23:20 (sixteen years ago) link
that's like 100% of the fun of getting delayed

and i'm stranded.
at least you have internet. what airport?
― J0rdan S., Friday, 21 December 2007 05:42 (sixteen years ago) link
o'hare.
never ever try traveling on two separate airlines in the same day. especially around the holidays. if one fucks you over the other couldn't care less.
― gr8080, Friday, 21 December 2007 05:42 (sixteen years ago) link
i honestly might be here for a day or two.

i'm camped out next to some payphones because its the only electrical outlet i could find. one of the payphones was ringing so i picked it up and said "hello?" a woman on the other end asked if Drea was there and i told her no Drea had left.
fuck i am bored.
― gr8080, Friday, 21 December 2007 05:52 (sixteen years ago) link
oh grady :(
go to bar! seriously, it helped me for about an hour. maybe they are closed now though? i was about to murder people by the time my plane finally boarded.
i once did 2 different airlines for international travel: super bad idea.
― tehresa, Friday, 21 December 2007 05:54 (sixteen years ago) link
the thing is that i cant get through security until i'm signed up for standby and i cant do that for another 5 hours.
there is this hilton right across from where the taxis pick you up. i suppose i could get a drink there.
― gr8080, Friday, 21 December 2007 05:57 (sixteen years ago) link
DO IT. Stay out of security as long as you can... once you're on the other side, it's soooo hellish.

a guy just came looking to plug his phone in but i'm using the only two outlets. i offered to unplug my computer for a while but he said nevermind and walked away.
