That's a tough one... there are a plethora of generic sports bars around Union Square, but BOTH chili cookoff sounds more fun.

Maybe head over to North Beach for more small-scale options or into the TL for more colorful ones?

Yeah, i knew i was asking a lot. Been looking around more and the VinClub in North Beach has a ticketed deal for unlimited apps, beer and wine for $35 which sounded sort of appealing...but yeah, BOTH seemed like it would be sort of fun. Theyre staying near the TL so we could end up somewhere around there too. Football nerd me is just worried about SEEING the game, lol.

VegemiteGrrrl, Thursday, 3 February 2011 05:28 (thirteen years ago) link

I don't see how you can pass up BOTH unless you think the tv's will be too small or something. VinClub would be a pretty weird place to watch football imo.

polyphonic, Thursday, 3 February 2011 06:26 (thirteen years ago) link

I've never been to Vin. Am definitely leaning BOTH

RT @kcbs_morning: We're now told SFFD fought three fires in Castro District this morning. No word yet on any possible connection.

Market St is closed between 15th & Castro due to the 2 separate fires in the Castro.

SFFD working 2 separate fires in the Castro. 17th & Hartford and 16th & Market. Traffic control on Market.

I was walking past the fire station on Sanchez as they were leaving this morning at about 4:00 AM. It looked like the fire was at the back of that motel on Market or at that mortuary. The odd thing was that another fire station had already arrived at the fire before the station that was less than 1/2 block from the fire. When I left the gym at 5 AM or so, they were leaving again to go to the other fire further up in the Castro.

svend, Thursday, 3 February 2011 15:19 (thirteen years ago) link

SFGate doesn't even seem to mention the fire that was going on at 4 AM.

svend, Thursday, 3 February 2011 15:21 (thirteen years ago) link

sfgate is completely useless. none of the local network morning news were talking about the fires either. everything is outsourced these days.

The place on Irving and 7th? 6th? is pretty good IIRC. Yellow Submarine, I think.

Kingfoot's good, so is Yellow Submarine. Gambino's in the Embarcadero.

The sandwiches at Molinari's are great but I don't think they're quite the sub you mean.

does anything special go on July 4 weekend? seems like a good place to avoid boilerplate jingoism.

your generation appalls me (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 12 April 2011 16:20 (thirteen years ago) link

Lucca's good too, Steve.

You mean here in SF, Morbs? We usually have our patented glowing fog on July 4th.

the Mission pretty much explodes on July 4th, since we're the only neighborhood without any fog. Between 9 and 11 it's nonstop guerilla fireworks, for the most part

I usually go hang in Sausalito w/my family. Dunphy Park has a totally corny, family-oriented 4th of July celebration but it's vaguely hippyish and not at all jingoistic. If you're lucky, you can see Sausalito, Berkeley and SF's fireworks.

last year, i was on the roof of my then-boyfriend's building in downtown Oakland, and we could see the fireworks in Oakland, Berkeley, Richmond, San Rafael, San Francisco, and San Bruno. it was totally amazing.

yeah, i did watch it. but jello is delicious.

eating california rolls of a dude's taint (the table is the table), Sunday, 24 April 2011 21:49 (thirteen years ago) link

I gotta side with Stevie...jello is delicious and all, but the toothpick sculpture is incredible.

VegemiteGrrl, Sunday, 24 April 2011 21:56 (thirteen years ago) link

but....i guess that i am more on the side of 'realism' in depictions of my delightful area, and while the toothpick thing is amazing, i am more into how incredibly real-looking the jello stuff is. i mean, even if i just saw a picture of it without context, i would say, "THAT IS THE BAY BRIDGE MADE OUT OF JELLO HOLY SHIT"

eating california rolls of a dude's taint (the table is the table), Sunday, 24 April 2011 22:01 (thirteen years ago) link

the jello is cool looking but still seems like 'artist uses gimmick to get press' whereas the toothpick guy is more 'crazy dude in basement who would be doing this with his free time even if nobody cared'...which I find much more respectable, really

iatee, Sunday, 24 April 2011 22:41 (thirteen years ago) link

and toothpick guy's work is sentimental which appeals more to me, plus the whimsy of the ball things

I have overdosed on hipster Rube Goldberg contraptions recently (yes, this is a thing) but this dude redeems the genre.
