Huh, a thought I had when walking the hills of SF was "It's a good thing this city doesn't get ice." Good luck not sliding into an intersection, guys!

just wanna give 2 restaurant recommendations. last night went out w/the inlaws to a filipino restaurant in San Bruno (why are they all there?) called Intramuros. definitely the best flip food i've ever had.

and tonight went to Tyler Florence's Wayfare Tavern. i read a pretty shitty review of it, but talked to shasta, who's friend was friends w/him and defended it, so wasn't sure what to expect. it was AMAZING. sat at the bar because we were last minute. the poutine was seriously to die for. truffles (shaved and oil), fries, some sort of melted cheese and short ribs. four of my favorite things in the world combined. i shouldn't have ordered anything else, but i got the burger. one of the best in the city. seriously. i couldn't finish it though. pretty stoked on this place.

Jury Exonerates Dude Who Was Just Trying to Sell Another Dude a Cigarette

We find this story odd and disturbing: 28-year-old Matthew Martinez, a local chef, was walking near 8th and Mission when a staggering man holding a beer can came up to him and asked if he could buy a cigarette. Martinez gave him one, and the guy strangely gestures to his shirt pocket which has a wad of bills sticking out of it. Martinez says he took out a single dollar and pushed the rest back in his pocket, but immediately he was thrown up against a car, handcuffed, and taken to police headquarters where he sat for three hours before being told what he was arrested for doing.

It turns out the "drunk" guy was one of eight undercover officers who were part of a sting from the SFPD's controversial "Robbery Abatement" program, which focuses its efforts on protecting those who are "down on their luck" from being robbed. The trouble is, the police have been accused of using this very expensive undercover operation to entrap poor people who may or may not have had any intention of robbing other poor people, doing things walking around with wads of money falling out of their pockets?

Martinez was found not guilty last week, and the jury only had to deliberate for 15 minutes before reaching their verdict.

Public Defender Jeff Adachi says, "This case illustrates how easily the line between crime prevention and crime manufacturing can be crossed." The DA's office, sticking to their guns that Martinez -- who's held positions of responsibility in restaurants in San Francisco, Portland, and New York -- was guilty, said they “respectfully disagree” with the verdict.

Seriously though... this is what the SFPD is up to?

Hello Bay Area ILXors. I am in town briefly (fly back to DC Sat a.m.) and am obligated to mostly family stuff and studying for a stupid exam, but am trying to squeeze in fun stuff where I can.

Question: any recs for lunch in Oakland today? I'm without car in Oakland Hills but can probably bully my brother into taking me somewhere this afternoon. Sit-down and take-out options both welcome.

Apparently eating at Spruce tonight, menu navigation also welcome.

quincie, Wednesday, 8 December 2010 16:39 (thirteen years ago) link

spruce's charcuterie gran selection is my favorite!
duck gelee mousse and the coppa especially
they usually have a lobster pasta dish which is great
also their burger and fries is realllly good.

oakand lunch recs: bakesale betty's or le cheval* (*might have closed or relocated)... tbh it's kind of a soup day so maybe pho at Binh Minh Quan in chinatown?

i love you but i have chosen snarkness (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 16:53 (thirteen years ago) link

Oh good I love good charcuterie! And I'm meeting 69 for lunch at Bakesale Betty's tomorrow!

Apparently my bro wants us to check out his buddy's hot dog joint for lunch--forget what it's called (some sort of pun on "dog" iirc), but bro says they have really really good fries. Like, the kind that are even good cold.

hey guys, USF sold the 90.3FM license to a classical-only station without notifying the KUSF staff. maybe this is business as usual, but it's fucked up. there's a meeting at fromm hall at 7pm tomorrow. a university representative will be there to talk about the future of the station, and KUSF wants as big a public turnout as possible. if you like KUSF or independent freeform radio or protests or whatever, please show up. we'll meet in front of phelan hall on the USF campus at 645pm, then walk over to fromm hall together.

anyone know of a good cheap place to stay near Haight? A friend of mine is visiting for a few days and asked but of course living here I don't know much about hotels. The Metro on Divis has ok yelp reviews but I was dubious thinking it might be noisy being on Divis. There's also the Red Vic hotel which seems intersting but possibly roachy. Any experience at these places/suggestions?

Not the real Village People, Monday, 24 January 2011 04:39 (thirteen years ago) link

It's not noisy at all, in fact it's pretty dead (except for the new restaurant downstairs in the evenings) at night. I wouldn't worry about it. If the sight of crusing tourists doesn't bother your friend, they can try Beck's Motor Lodge on Market/Sanchez in the Castro, not too far from Haight/Divis. The Red Vic is pretty meh.

this is kind of an arrggh question, but I need some help.

My brother & his girlfriend are in SF for Superbowl weekend (visiting from Australia)
I need to find somewhere cool to take them to hang out and watch the Superbowl. First timers, wanna give them a good experience. We were going to bring them back to Sac for classic living room action but it isnt going to work out so we're sorta stuck with the city plan.
They're staying downtown - we will have a car so we can drag them wherever.
Bottom of the Hill is having their heavy metal / chili cook off and there's a couple of other places that look cool, but I'm still not super sold on anything. Anyone got any faves?

Believe me, i totally realize that somene's house is the best option but that's a dead end, so your recommendations will be gratefully received!

VegemiteGrrrl, Thursday, 3 February 2011 03:14 (thirteen years ago) link

That's a tough one... there are a plethora of generic sports bars around Union Square, but BOTH chili cookoff sounds more fun.

Maybe head over to North Beach for more small-scale options or into the TL for more colorful ones?

i love you but i have chosen snarkness (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 3 February 2011 04:57 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, i knew i was asking a lot. Been looking around more and the VinClub in North Beach has a ticketed deal for unlimited apps, beer and wine for $35 which sounded sort of appealing...but yeah, BOTH seemed like it would be sort of fun. Theyre staying near the TL so we could end up somewhere around there too. Football nerd me is just worried about SEEING the game, lol.

VegemiteGrrrl, Thursday, 3 February 2011 05:28 (thirteen years ago) link

I don't see how you can pass up BOTH unless you think the tv's will be too small or something. VinClub would be a pretty weird place to watch football imo.

polyphonic, Thursday, 3 February 2011 06:26 (thirteen years ago) link

I've never been to Vin. Am definitely leaning BOTH

RT @kcbs_morning: We're now told SFFD fought three fires in Castro District this morning. No word yet on any possible connection.

Market St is closed between 15th & Castro due to the 2 separate fires in the Castro.

I was walking past the fire station on Sanchez as they were leaving this morning at about 4:00 AM. It looked like the fire was at the back of that motel on Market or at that mortuary. The odd thing was that another fire station had already arrived at the fire before the station that was less than 1/2 block from the fire. When I left the gym at 5 AM or so, they were leaving again to go to the other fire further up in the Castro.

svend, Thursday, 3 February 2011 15:19 (thirteen years ago) link

SFGate doesn't even seem to mention the fire that was going on at 4 AM.

svend, Thursday, 3 February 2011 15:21 (thirteen years ago) link

sfgate is completely useless. none of the local network morning news were talking about the fires either. everything is outsourced these days.
