Well, it happened to me, and I'm still here.

Mark G, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 11:10 (fifteen years ago)

We already have a second generation in Rufus and ilx babies like Beeps so while ILX itself may not exist, there may be a future ILX Legacy or something.

hoy orbison (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 23 November 2010 11:21 (fifteen years ago)

I would sy I was 2nd gen, mainly because there were quite a few here when I started, and there are a few ILX references of old I never clued onto. The word "Broheems" was really funny for some reason...

Mark G, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 11:23 (fifteen years ago)

I'd imagine it's most likely to end for technological reasons - ie one day there suddenly isn't a server any more. I'd imagine at that point it would displace into smaller communities elsewhere (as it's been doing all along really).

Matt DC, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 11:25 (fifteen years ago)

I worry about the next generation of ILXors, I just don't think they share the values of ILX. Do they even have any values???

I see what this is (Local Garda), Tuesday, 23 November 2010 11:26 (fifteen years ago)

install sensors in the hearts of every current poster, shut the server off when the last one dies.

Antoine Bugleboy (Merdeyeux), Tuesday, 23 November 2010 11:26 (fifteen years ago)

never thought it would last this long

Jefferson Mansplain (DG), Tuesday, 23 November 2010 11:38 (fifteen years ago)

ilx 2.0 lives on in the heart of all true zingers.

never having met an ilxor IRL I'm still not convinced ilxor.com isn't just conceptual "web art"

I Want to Change My Password... (am0n), Tuesday, 23 November 2010 15:10 (fifteen years ago)

well i've done my part - there are now two little people in my house that literally wouldn't exist if not for ilx, so yeah, it lives!

Kim, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 15:56 (fifteen years ago)

ive spent about a third of my life on ilx so far, was there in the very early days under a different name, asking about fancy coats. in 2002 i used up my dolebum time quota and got stuck in a victims support office so downloaded the entire archives of ilx, stuck them on a disc and spent every day for 6 months reading through them. mm good times

NI, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 16:12 (fifteen years ago)

poll looks more unambitious with every passing day:
Will ILX still be here when this poll ends

I share your concern. That's why I, along with some other participants on this and other preferred cyberspace destinations have inaugurated CONDOM, the Coalition Opting for Neighbourly Decency on New Messageboards. We're greatly concerned with the rupturing of traditional moral safeguards which occurs in young people after repeated exposure to chillwave music videos and Facebook agricultural simulations (watering cans with bikini motifs, operating cybertractors at unsafe speeds or customizing them to output rude noises, etc...)

unfished business is the only one who does public appearances these days. country matters and acoulethic just can't be arsed these days, though you can occasionally spot them reciting Gray's Elegy together on the Peterhouse Cambridge quad (but don't wave and don't say hi!).

How would one do this?

c&p loong threads onto word i'd say?

It sounded like NI dumped the whole site onto CDs. C+P would be prohibitively time consuming.

I imagine there is a way for admins to backup everything on the server... wouldn't know how regular peeps access this 'feature.'

Grim Viceroy Tales: Hit the Trail… to Flavor! (Viceroy), Sunday, 28 November 2010 17:18 (fifteen years ago)

One day I am going to spend a lot of time finding my old posts and saving them on my computer. I have never been able to keep a blog or diary, but my posts on ILX are a pretty good record of my daily thoughts and activities, so they will suffice.

i need to organize my zines (Jesse), Sunday, 28 November 2010 17:24 (fifteen years ago)

yeah i used some webcrawler thing that made a mirror of the entire ilx site. don't really know how it worked, had loads of trouble with it at the time. im sure someone on one of the computer problems threads could help though if you wanted to do it now - if that's even possible these days. it was nearing a gig back then, must be about 20x that by now.

that said, a few years later when i worked at some other civil service job (with not-goodwin and stone monkey) i used to c&p interesting threads into word and print them out in teeny tiny font and spend all day reading them. ilx helping waste taxpayers money since 2002.

is there a tool that would display all the posts you made on ilx, like jesse said? surely some tinkering with the search function could do this, would be pretty handy

Still do this when someone restarts a funny and LONG thread from before my time.

Yeah, I'd like to make my autobiog from all my "interesting posts of longer than 3 sentences". There's gold in these hills!

Mark G, Monday, 29 November 2010 09:35 (fifteen years ago)

Dear God. I don't want to see things I wrote eight years ago. At best, they'd be something I'd think to say even now, which means I haven't grown up at all. At worst... well. They'd be worse-to-much-worse.

I've looked; there's nothing of any importance here to embarrass me in all of the nine years I've been here. I've been online long enough to have made all of my early posting mistakes on long-vanished dial-up BBSs and mailing lists.

I'm imagining a library where every single ilx user has a volume containing his/her complete posting history. the real gem of the collection would, of course, be...
