now he's harassing wild animals just minding their own business in heaven

Seriously, we should have locked the thread right after this post.

Seconded.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 17:14 (seventeen years ago) link

Yes, let's not let anyone defend the dude or say anything nice about him.

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 17:16 (seventeen years ago) link

thirded

xpost - he was awesome.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 17:19 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, that was my point ailsa not that this thread turned into a clusterfuck of stupid grandstanding. Kudos to you.

Young Fresh Danny D (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 17:19 (seventeen years ago) link

Man everyone is talking about this, it's bigger than Iraq.

Ogmor Roundtrouser (Ogmor Roundtrouser), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 17:28 (seventeen years ago) link

So instead of a banner with an eagle crying we need one showing crocodile tears?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 17:32 (seventeen years ago) link

ha bloody ha

always crashing in other people's cars (kenan), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 17:34 (seventeen years ago) link

Sorry, Dan, misunderstood, thought you meant you agreed that he was an animal harasser and that was as good a point to end on.

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 17:37 (seventeen years ago) link

That comment feels like it was the only humorous comment that wasn't completely mean-spirited (the mental image is priceless and totally endearing). Given some of the stuff that followed and the outright nastiness that started popping up in the thread, that one seemed like a good one to end on (although we would have missed the mysteriously-hysterical "ha bloody ha" post from Suddenly-British-Kenan so maybe I spoke too soon).

I am still somewhat perplexed by his manner of death, not from the "how can someone die like that?" angle, but rather from the "HOLY SHIT A STINGRAY BARB IN THE HEART?????" angle.

Young Fresh Danny D (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 17:56 (seventeen years ago) link

Has this thread missed the fact that he may be afforded a state funeral in Australia if his family wish it? (though I'm not convinced fron the quotes that that's what the governor means by the state honouring him, but hey...)

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 18:05 (seventeen years ago) link

They announced that on the radio this morning. I boggled. Like others, I had no idea that he was really THAT famous.

Young Fresh Danny D (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 18:12 (seventeen years ago) link

"Pacific Ocean to be renamed Steve's Lake."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 18:15 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah. Part of me thinks "yeah, cool, he's a national hero and an excellent ambassador for the country" and part of me thinks he's like the Hasslehoff of conservationism and WTF with the state funeral malarkey?

Mind you, George Best got as good as a state funeral here - probably the most high-profile funeral outwith Diana and the Queen Mum in my lifetime, so it's not *that* unlikely, I guess, if he's that highly regarded. But is he? An Australian who isn't Esteban to explain, plz.

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 18:20 (seventeen years ago) link

With the Hasslehoff comment, I'm not meaning to denigrate any work at all that he had done for Australia, wildlife conservation, etc, the guy put his money where his mouth is and made a lot of things interesting and accessible for a lot of people, raising awareness and money in the process. But, really, he was a walking parody of himself (Crocodile Hunter: The Movie, or whatever it was called? Come on!) in the process - a loveable, instantly recognisable, fool.

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 18:24 (seventeen years ago) link

On NPR yesterday, every time they mentioned his death they simply called him *Steve Irwin - Conservationist*. it sounded weird. i had no idea about the ted turner land stuff either. (er, famous crazy american who has bought millions of acres of american land for the purpose of conservation for those who don't follow u.s. media tycoons.)

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 18:27 (seventeen years ago) link

The oddest bit from here:

On Tuesday, Australia's federal parliament paused to honour Mr Irwin, whom Prime Minister John Howard said had died in "quintessentially Australian circumstances".

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 18:31 (seventeen years ago) link

"quintessentially Australian circumstances".

wouldn't that be falling down and hitting your head on a rock after too much lager? hahahahahaha, but i kid.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 18:35 (seventeen years ago) link

I am still somewhat perplexed by his manner of death, not from the "how can someone die like that?" angle, but rather from the "HOLY SHIT A STINGRAY BARB IN THE HEART?????" angle.

Elliot Smith would've pulled that fucker out and then stuck it back in.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 18:36 (seventeen years ago) link

:(

Sam: Screwed and Chopped (Molly Jones), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 18:37 (seventeen years ago) link

Elliot Ness would have booked the stingray on tax evasion charges.

Young Fresh Danny D (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 18:37 (seventeen years ago) link

*Steve Irwin - Conservationist*.

The Guardian obit has him as a "television wildlife presenter", all but ignoring the work he did in education and conservationism, basically going for the "he's a wacky and inexplicably popular TV/film star" tack instead. Mind you they also let Germaine Greer loose on him in a vile manner (see upthread), so...

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 18:40 (seventeen years ago) link

Eliot would have helped the stingray build a communicator so it could phone home.

Young Fresh Danny D (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 18:40 (seventeen years ago) link

jodie foster would have stabbed that stingray with her cheekbones before it had a chance to strike.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 18:40 (seventeen years ago) link

I don't remember that scene in "Nell".

Young Fresh Danny D (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 18:42 (seventeen years ago) link

Did the stingray die? or we ignoring the pain of its loved ones?

Sam: Screwed and Chopped (Molly Jones), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 18:48 (seventeen years ago) link

fuck that stingray

ath (ath), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 18:49 (seventeen years ago) link

Of course it's tragic that he met an untimely end, but I just can't
see how anyone could see that insane baby-dangling
picture and conclude he was merely "eccentric." He was sadly
unhinged.

Squirrel_Police (Squirrel_Police), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 20:20 (seventeen years ago) link

Actually I think he was pretty merrily unhinged, if you want to be
precise about it.

Young Fresh Danny D (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 20:23 (seventeen years ago) link

He wanted his death to be shown on TV, apparently.

StanM (StanM), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 21:12 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh, I thought I'd posted that to the thread, but I must have just emailed it to someone instead. Yeah, I'm not entirely sure I want to see that.

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 21:15 (seventeen years ago) link

"Hey kids, gather around the television for a very special episode of The Crocodile Hunter!"

Yikes.

Young Fresh Danny D (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 21:16 (seventeen years ago) link

I'd buy that for a dollar.

mr. brojangles (sanskrit), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 21:16 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, you're right. They look just like him. Poor kids.

His wife was a snappy dresser, though. I'm sure she'll have no problem finding a replacement.

could a mod bend the rules and figure out a way of embedding this video?

have to admit it had me pretty choked up by the end.

Okay.

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 03:01 (seventeen years ago) link

That video is quite lovely.

State funerals here are usually given to former politicians or war veterans, and sometimes to well-known personalities who are deemed to have contributed to the country, like Kerry Packer. It's an honour, but not especially rare. Often it's a matter of enough public demand. AND some pretty vile and controversial people have received a state service in the past, like Sir Joh Bjelke-Petersen.

salexandra (salexander), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 07:00 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh, it seems there won't be a state funeral anyway:

http://www.abc.net.au/news/newsitems/200609/s1734412.htm

Steve Irwin's father says he is determined to carry on his son's work.

Bob Irwin has spoken publicly for the first time since his son was killed by a stingray while diving off Port Douglas in far north Queensland two days ago.

Surrounded by media and those who had come to pay their respects, Mr Irwin held an impromptu press conference at Australia Zoo on the Sunshine Coast.

Hundreds of floral tributes and fan messages acted as a backdrop and family friend John Stainton was by his side.

Mr Irwin described how he was struggling to come to terms with his son's death.

He explained how he and his son had joked about death, but not taken unnecessary risks.

He said their relationship was as mates, rather than father and son.

"I'm a lucky, lucky guy that I've had the opportunity to have a son like Steve," he said.

Mr Irwin said the family had declined the offer of a state funeral.

He said his son would not have wanted a large funeral.

"The state funeral would be refused, because he's an ordinary guy, he's just an ordinary bloke," he said.

"He wants to be remembered as an ordinary bloke."

Mr Irwin also called on the media to respect the family's privacy.

He said his daughter-in-law Terri is coping as well as can be expected.

Ha ha, a state funeral for a guy who wrestled crocodiles! I love Australia!

A state funeral? No way that my tax dollars is ever going to pay for Steve Bloody Irwin's funeral...

Domenico Buttez (ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!!), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 08:54 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm starting to get the impression that you're not a fan.

StanM (StanM), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 08:56 (seventeen years ago) link

Erm, state funeral as in a QUEENSLAND state funeral. So rest-assured Esteban, your hard-earned dollars are safe, as indeed are Queenslanders' $$$.

salexandra (salexander), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 08:58 (seventeen years ago) link

Queensland can afford it. We have less debt than any other Australian state apparently.

I'm down for runnin' up on them crackers in the city hall... (papa november), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 09:12 (seventeen years ago) link

I expect the Big Pineapple brings in a lot of revenue.

C J (C J), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 09:16 (seventeen years ago) link

I don't think state means state if you know what I mean (and you probably don't).

Besides, they might have to flog off The Big Rum Bottle and that's unacceptable.

Domenico Buttez (ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!!), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 09:22 (seventeen years ago) link

I remember what a good sport Irwin was on Graham Norton's old C4 show - wrestling with a blow up croc in a paddling pool etc. Marvellous.

I had to watch that youtube clip on mute because of fuckin Green Day.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 09:25 (seventeen years ago) link

SI strikes me as a Green Day kinda guy.
