in my state the liquor store has free boxes, just take em and no worries.

I am also moving. On Monday morning. Hypothetically. But I haven't packed a lick, I haven't made an appointment with movers yet, and I'm terrified my building's elevator, which breaks down about three times a week, will be OUT on the day and they'll have to bring everything down from the 6th floor.

just push everything down the stairs - well packed of course with marshmallows

I have thrown bags of clothes down several flights of stairs before, but I don't recommend it without reservation.

Looks like a great place, Ned! I'm also moving, this weekend. All the stuff is packed up. Exciting features include an actual backyard (already created a huge garden back there :) :) :), a front porch (not as nice as Ned's, but still functional!), a washer/dryer that's in the basement instead of down the street, and is free, and...a rain barrel that's full of mosquitoes. At least 300-400, maybe more, and larvae. Working on that.

Thought about punching the mosquitoes in the face until they flew away, but eventually decided to drain the rain barrel and start from scratch. And purchase/wear a beekeeper's suit in the meantime.

Silver Spring, about 4 blocks away frimthe metro, but somehow isolated from noise and traffic by huge gardens all around. And the people in the house behind us have this awesome aviary with national geographic-esque birds inside! It's a good spot, I think. Still would rather live closer to downtown DC, but we have to live in MD for another couple years (in-state tuition for E)

Honestly, my pro-tip more than all the others is: Put like things with like. I have classifications of things: "books", "folded clothes", "hanging clothes", "toiletries", "linens", "kitchen", "kitchen - fragile", and so on. Pack and label the boxes and BE SPECIFIC. Not until the frantic very very end should you be contemplating putting a bunch of hangers in a box with two cookbooks, the extra guest bedding, and a lamp without its shade.

Pro tip #2: Have enough boxes, by which I mean "Have an entire world's worth of boxes because otherwise you'll never know what's enough." I had about 35 of varying sizes when I moved last month and I really needed at least 40, maybe 45.

Other favorite tips involve Saran wrap, and having decided where EVERYTHING is going in the new place so you can tell movers where to leave furniture.
