I also think that the football player ROBIN VAN PERSIE is massively overrated and annoying.

I would love there to be an "I Love Football" board so I can banish all football threads to the same limbo that Cricket, NFL, basketball, bicycles, videogames and other people's children languish in. I think this would be a brilliant move.

The only slight caveat I have is that the problem is, even though unfollowed boards are bannished from Site New Answers, they still turn up on Blog View. This isn't really a problem with NFL and baseball threads as they don't tend to be active at the time I'm at work and reading blog view, but if there are suddenly 500 football threads in Blog View, that would be irritating.

However, I think it would be a minor request to make site Blog View mirror the Site New Answers filter? That would make everything just perfect. Obviously, if that's a massive programming hassle, then never mind. But it would be nice.

I still have no idea why anyone would want to use Blog View.

Matt DC, Monday, 20 September 2010 09:46 (thirteen years ago) link

It means that you can keep an eye on threads you're not actively following without having to click on them and get that annoying little hollow bullet you can't reset. Also it gives you an idea if threads whose title is confusing or misleading are actually about something you want to read, or if a previously boring thread has mutated into something interesting.

Mostly, it just enables you to look at a whole series of recently updated threads and see what's going on, without clicking every single thread and reading them.

Hence, it's really good for work, when you want a quick hit of "what's going on in ILX" in a short enough capsule to do before the next chunk of work.

Karen D. Tregaskin, Monday, 20 September 2010 09:51 (thirteen years ago) link

i don't care about where football is on ilx, but a real-world equivalent of a sub-board for it would be MUCH APPRECIATED

no this is a good thing - by ghettoizing the topic you draw the real heads in and provide a disincentive for people who don't know what they're talking about - this leads to better discussion and way better/funnier threads

just do more football threads on ile in you want

the difference w/ ilg for instance is that there are loads of threads for games in development that might occasionally or sporadically get new posts, whereas football threads are either for a season or just random

FUCK NO. ILE already has more than enough football threads. It's just about tolerable when it's one rolling thread but if there were half a dozen in new answers, it would be really annoying and intrusive. Like when New Answers gets swamped by 16 different THE ILX TOURNAMENT OF CHEESE or whatever threads all at once.

Karen D. Tregaskin, Monday, 20 September 2010 11:59 (thirteen years ago) link

well it's one or the other tbh, more on ILE or a dedicated board.

illiterate mods are killing ilx (darraghmac), Monday, 20 September 2010 12:04 (thirteen years ago) link

Not really your position alone to dictate things like this. It's also why Hide Thread is a better option than constantly starting new boards to hive off everything that might ever possibly annoy someone. You don't have to click on the threads.

Did you ever think to consider that perhaps retorts/attitudes like this are part of the reason that people who hate football REALLY hate and loathe football, rather than just hate and ignore it?

Imagine how some of you would react if there wasn't just the occasional single clusterfuck thread about religion/atheism, but about a dozen threads about various aspects of obscure theology hovering constantly at the top of new answers?

Obviously, this doesn't happen (and there is actually a supposed dedicated board for religion) but this is why some people would rather have a separate board the same as all the other sports do. Because not everyone is interested in it, and the cultural domination of sport is really objectionable to some people.

But you are probably just trolling and I have probably just taken the bait, but my point still stands.

these aren't reasons for fewer football threads, but i agree about a dedicated board to avoid clogging ILE with too many similar threads

I probably just wouldn't click on them, rather than getting all irate and self-righteous about it.

don't rly give a fuck that you have a few extra threads on SNA that you don't have to click on

Chinedu "Edu" Obasi Ogbuke (nakhchivan), Monday, 20 September 2010 12:22 (thirteen years ago) link

there aren't rly a surfeit of 10 reply football threads being posted every day

Chinedu "Edu" Obasi Ogbuke (nakhchivan), Monday, 20 September 2010 12:23 (thirteen years ago) link

changed my mind, ilx should have an 'i love clusterfucks' board as a priority, we'll deal with football at a later date.

illiterate mods are killing ilx (darraghmac), Monday, 20 September 2010 12:23 (thirteen years ago) link

Well, "I love football" board would have, potentially:

1) dedicated threads for each team,
2) general discussion points, rolling "what's happening" stuff, you know,
3) individual news items, "Lol Gazza", roonie, etcet

What's not to love about that, football dudes?

Mark G, Monday, 20 September 2010 12:26 (thirteen years ago) link

exactly^

not for a second advocating moving the bigger and more popular threads from ILE fwiw, those monsters can co-exist happily with a smaller and more, eh, 'annoying' board

illiterate mods are killing ilx (darraghmac), Monday, 20 September 2010 12:30 (thirteen years ago) link

I have noticed that sub-forums for specific topics have fared a lot better since the introduction of Site New Answers and being able to edit what boards are displayed.

Sub-forums introduced after this distinction have thrived in a way that ones like I Love Film didn't have much of a chance to.

If you are using SNA, it doesn't really seem to change your experience of the board much at all, positively or negatively (in fact, if anything, it would seem to affect it positively if a subforum meant you could have more threads and more discussion) - and yet it has the effect of enabling other people to *definitely* have a more positive experience of ILX by being able to filter more effectively.

I simply do not understand why there is such an objection to this idea. It's no weirder or more inconvenient than having "I Love Music" at this point.

Karen D. Tregaskin, Monday, 20 September 2010 12:37 (thirteen years ago) link

My fear is the same as Matt's I think - that we'd lose random interjections and end up talking only to ourselves. There are worse fates I guess (see: every other footy forum I've ever seen) but it'd at best make it less interesting; at worst, I don't know, fail to attractnew blood and dwindle towards in-jokes.

At the very least keep the big rolling threads here, I say.

Ismael Klata, Monday, 20 September 2010 12:37 (thirteen years ago) link

Works both ways btw - just reading a footy board would mean missing out on a whole load of random ILE cal.

Ismael Klata, Monday, 20 September 2010 12:39 (thirteen years ago) link

New boards seem to be shown in SNA by default - you have to actively turn them off in order to get them not to show. So I really don't think you'd be losing any randomers unless they had deliberately chosen not to see football threads.

Karen D. Tregaskin, Monday, 20 September 2010 12:39 (thirteen years ago) link

I don't know how anyone else navigates the site
