Anybody else been to Nomu on Balboa and 5th?

Un peu d'Eire, ça fait toujours Dublin (Michael White), Thursday, 16 September 2010 14:13 (thirteen years ago) link

It's NAMU and I've been 2x. Once was with a chef who the Namu chefs admire so we ate and drank like kings for the sum totale of $0.00 but a few months later I returned with 3 friends and we had a couple of their apps including their famous Korean Tacos and by the time I got home those Korean Tacos had run their course (and some) to a very unpleasant end. Never returned.

Oops, sorry. I was underwhelmed by the tacos, tbh, but their ramen was awesome, the collard green wrapped rolls were strange yet delicious, their tofu was out of this world, so unctuous, and the shitake DUMPLINGS! were great, too. Their pickle starters were excellent and the soba was good, too. I really liked it.

DUMPLINGS!

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Thursday, 16 September 2010 15:41 (thirteen years ago) link

Namu is good, but I prefer Halu's cheaper and better ramen.

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Thursday, 16 September 2010 15:42 (thirteen years ago) link

Also DUMPLINGS!

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Thursday, 16 September 2010 15:42 (thirteen years ago) link

Where is Halu?

Un peu d'Eire, ça fait toujours Dublin (Michael White), Thursday, 16 September 2010 15:49 (thirteen years ago) link

8th and Clement.

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Thursday, 16 September 2010 15:56 (thirteen years ago) link

They don't have DUMPLINGS! though.

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Thursday, 16 September 2010 15:57 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm perplexed how I ended up typing that but rather content with the unbridled dumpling enthusiasm it conveys.

Un peu d'Eire, ça fait toujours Dublin (Michael White), Thursday, 16 September 2010 16:02 (thirteen years ago) link

Halu indeed has DUMPLINGS!! THE JAPANTOWN OF THE INNER RICHMOND: DUMPLINGS!!!! but they are known as "gyoza".

Fartbritz Sootzveti (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 16 September 2010 16:06 (thirteen years ago) link

Apparently there is some code somewhere which converts normal d u m p l i n g talk into DUMPLINGS!

We re-discovered it when we were talking about the Bai Ling eats fetuses masterpiece on the decade of film thread.

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Thursday, 16 September 2010 16:07 (thirteen years ago) link

Halu doesn't always have gyoza, but yes sometimes the DUMPLINGS! OF JAPAN are on the special board. They are fantastic when they do have them though.

We have a show tonight at the Bottom of the Hill if anyone is looking for something to do...

Didn't read that but I wouldn't at all be surprised that Bai Ling did eat fetuses.

Un peu d'Eire, ça fait toujours Dublin (Michael White), Thursday, 16 September 2010 16:16 (thirteen years ago) link

Yes, well the movie DUMPLINGS! is a expose of exactly that.

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Thursday, 16 September 2010 16:36 (thirteen years ago) link

Alex, do you have Jaxon's IM? He is doing a thinkpiece on USA remakes of foreign horror films and I told him that this is right in your wheelhouse.

Fartbritz Sootzveti (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 16 September 2010 16:48 (thirteen years ago) link

I do have it and he should have mine too. I'm not a super expert on these things since a lot of the US remakes have sounded so faithful that I didn't bother seeing them.

I wonder what the US remake of DUMPLINGS! would be called though? MEATLOAF! HAMBURGERS! THIN-CRUST PIZZA! The mind boggles.

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Thursday, 16 September 2010 17:14 (thirteen years ago) link

it would be called TEX WASABI

There is a place in Berkeley where you can get placenta stew, but it's kinda on the DL for obvious reasons.

This DUMPLINGS! movie sounds like a remake of that HK horror film from 25 (?) years ago called "Human pork bun" (rough translation).

Fartbritz Sootzveti (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 16 September 2010 18:30 (thirteen years ago) link

It's not. Are you thinking about The Untold Story with Anthony Wong?

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Thursday, 16 September 2010 18:39 (thirteen years ago) link

I guess there are translations which have Human Meat Pie in the title:

wtf pork chop?

人肉叉燒包 where
人肉 = "yak yun" (?) = human
叉燒包 = cha siu bao = pork bun

Fartbritz Sootzveti (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 16 September 2010 19:18 (thirteen years ago) link

It's a good movie.

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Thursday, 16 September 2010 19:37 (thirteen years ago) link

Although it's kind of unsettling eating pork buns for a while afterwards.

every time it gets nice in this city, my weird druggy neighbors keep us up all night partying with their windows open. I can't wait for fog and rain.

I read this whole story and I still don't really understand what people in my 'hood were so angry about

is it that they don't want any vendors in the park? or is it that they're angry that they weren't consulted about WHICH vendors would get to operate? I kinda can't fathom any Mission resident having a beef with La Cocina. Blue Bottle is a different matter but it's not like they're a horrible company or anything. and unless all these people were going to recommend a tax increase to make up for the Dept's $70k shortfall, what did they expect the Dept to do? I totally don't have any problem with either vendor operating in the park. Would be excited if they just fix the park's drainage problems and retrofit the bathrooms.

This reads like a Santa Cruz city council meeting...

schwantz, Tuesday, 28 September 2010 23:47 (thirteen years ago) link

it's just weird - there's all this negativity from the crowd, the elected officials seem like they're bending over backwards to appease everybody, same with the vendors. but people's objections are never really articulated

It doesn't hurt that it's a block away from my place but this new joint is awesome:
