Contemplating a trip to SF this fall...
Me-too. Probably won't happen but if it does I'll be coming to this thread with questions and concerns every hour on the hour.

Is Audium any good?
― djh, Saturday, 4 September 2010 20:08 (thirteen years ago) link
Apologies for wrecking this thread with touristy questions ... I'll shut up now.
― djh, Monday, 6 September 2010 20:52 (thirteen years ago) link
No worries! I've never been, so I can't comment... Maybe someone else? Many SFcans are at Burning Man - maybe that's the reason for the silence...?

I wrote SFists, but it looked lame.

^^ that blog has gone downhill

It looked completely insane like 20 minutes ago.

Still looks insane!

~$250 to fly Virgin America from DFW to SFO. Any reason to favor a week in mid-December (after finals, before holidays) vs one after New Years?

uh, airports will be more insane?
― sarahel, Friday, 10 September 2010 03:35 (thirteen years ago) link
... @ ^^^
anyways milo, weather in Dec is nicer than Jan. Plus you can see some of the holiday decorations downtown. Jan will have more retail sales. Less tourists but more conventions.

went this past february (mikeb, u weren't there were you? went for tina b's bday). it's kinda silly. it's a neat experience, but hella dated (like 60s dated). i didn't dislike my experience, but like mike says, go altered.

surprised that 53 homes were destroyed but only four people died (not complaining)

This morning there was a fire at Montgomery and Bush - smoke coming out of a manhole there. What's with all the burnitude?

PG&E, you gonna get sued
― Dr. Lol Evans (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 10 September 2010 16:04 (thirteen years ago) link
The problem may have been averted if PG&E were not so fast in laying off the meter readers. SmartMeters are not that good at detecting everything. ” by californicated1

jaxon I wasn't at Tina's b-day (how high were you? ;) ) unfortunately but I've been to the Audium four or five times and yeah, you're OTM there. the performances don't differ much at all; you get the feeling this would have been incredibly avant-garde in 1970, today not so much. I remember thinking when I went the first couple of times in the late 90's that it would be an utterly fantastic place for an acid party. :D

Anybody else been to Nomu on Balboa and 5th?
― Un peu d'Eire, ça fait toujours Dublin (Michael White), Thursday, 16 September 2010 14:13 (thirteen years ago) link
It's NAMU and I've been 2x. Once was with a chef who the Namu chefs admire so we ate and drank like kings for the sum totale of $0.00 but a few months later I returned with 3 friends and we had a couple of their apps including their famous Korean Tacos and by the time I got home those Korean Tacos had run their course (and some) to a very unpleasant end. Never returned.
― Fartbritz Sootzveti (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 16 September 2010 14:20 (thirteen years ago) link
Oops, sorry. I was underwhelmed by the tacos, tbh, but their ramen was awesome, the collard green wrapped rolls were strange yet delicious, their tofu was out of this world, so unctuous, and the shitake DUMPLINGS! were great, too. Their pickle starters were excellent and the soba was good, too. I really liked it.

DUMPLINGS!

Namu is good, but I prefer Halu's cheaper and better ramen.

Also DUMPLINGS!
Where is Halu?

8th and Clement.
― Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Thursday, 16 September 2010 15:56 (thirteen years ago) link
They don't have DUMPLINGS! though.
― Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Thursday, 16 September 2010 15:57 (thirteen years ago) link
I'm perplexed how I ended up typing that but rather content with the unbridled dumpling enthusiasm it conveys.
― Un peu d'Eire, ça fait toujours Dublin (Michael White), Thursday, 16 September 2010 16:02 (thirteen years ago) link
Halu indeed has DUMPLINGS!! THE JAPANTOWN OF THE INNER RICHMOND: DUMPLINGS!!!! but they are known as "gyoza".
― Fartbritz Sootzveti (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 16 September 2010 16:06 (thirteen years ago) link
Apparently there is some code somewhere which converts normal d u m p l i n g talk into DUMPLINGS!
We re-discovered it when we were talking about the Bai Ling eats fetuses masterpiece on the decade of film thread.
― Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Thursday, 16 September 2010 16:07 (thirteen years ago) link
Halu doesn't always have gyoza, but yes sometimes the DUMPLINGS! OF JAPAN are on the special board. They are fantastic when they do have them though.

Didn't read that but I wouldn't at all be surprised that Bai Ling did eat fetuses.
― Un peu d'Eire, ça fait toujours Dublin (Michael White), Thursday, 16 September 2010 16:16 (thirteen years ago) link
Yes, well the movie DUMPLINGS! is a expose of exactly that.

Alex, do you have Jaxon's IM? He is doing a thinkpiece on USA remakes of foreign horror films and I told him that this is right in your wheelhouse.
― Fartbritz Sootzveti (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 16 September 2010 16:48 (thirteen years ago) link
I do have it and he should have mine too. I'm not a super expert on these things since a lot of the US remakes have sounded so faithful that I didn't bother seeing them.
I wonder what the US remake of DUMPLINGS! would be called though? MEATLOAF! HAMBURGERS! THIN-CRUST PIZZA! The mind boggles.
― Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Thursday, 16 September 2010 17:14 (thirteen years ago) link
it would be called TEX WASABI

I just googled that.
I wonder what the US remake of DUMPLINGS!! would be called though?

There is a place in Berkeley where you can get placenta stew, but it's kinda on the DL for obvious reasons.
This DUMPLINGS! movie sounds like a remake of that HK horror film from 25 (?) years ago called "Human pork bun" (rough translation).
