I too am an acutal Chassidic Jew. I am appalled by both the hatred I see here from some of you and the serious ingnorance. Before you label me and many thousands of others please do your homework. I am a Breslover Chassid. I maintain a new blog at http://joyonnarrowbridge.blogspot.com/
If you would like to actually learn something come by and post a question. Ill do my best to answer. I dont try to convert anybody. I have love in my heart, or at least try to, for all of my fellows. I simply choose to live a life the way I believe that my creator has prescribed for me. I live in America where I was under the impression that was not a crime. Please stop the hatred and anti semitism. It is easy to say I am not an anti semtie I have Jewish friends. That is because most Jews dont act or in any way distinguish themselves as Jewish. What's to hate? They are just like you. It is your words regarding those who prasctice traditional Judaism that show your true colors.
I hope I have not offended anyone.

two weeks pass...
Uneducated rascals. My issue with this site is not the views but the errors that derive from a complete lack of education. Perhaps a fund should be set up for most of the contributers to simply educate them up to the high school level. If I receive replies, I will point out all the errors by the most stupid people I have yet to encounter on the net!

I went to a Catholic high school and, believe it or not, received very little education on this subject.

There are a few orthodox jews where I live-a few times while walking around I have been asked if I might be Jewish. At first I thought, "Uh-oh, missionaries." but after I said I wasn't they didn't bother me. Can anyone shed some light on this?

jews for jesus?

glasgow coma score (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 8 October 2005 13:30 (eighteen years ago) link

Most of them round my way tend to ride these huge (like, HUGE) penny farthings. It's got to the point now where there are probably five or six mod shops in my town - big chrome wheels, bucketsaddles, spotlights. Some of them have monster stereos on the side, blasting out that angular maths rock that all hassidic jews everywhere in the world love so much.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v215/lynskey/penny.jpg

Some of my friends in nearby Ganton claim that they don't mix too much with "the Sith", as I believe they call us non-Hassdic jews. That's not the case around my neck of the woods, they're very socially active, mainly organising festivals celebrating early and mid 80's commercial reggae - although my band did get told off last year for playing "Pass The Dutchie", which apparently has "unclean" lyrics.

They want to make sure actual jews are being jewish up to their standards. They don't convert christians.

Jonothong Williamsmang (ex machina), Saturday, 8 October 2005 19:10 (eighteen years ago) link

Jonothong,
Go back to kindergarden. You cannot convert a Jew to Judaism. They are asking if the person is Jewish so that they will be able to offer them a chance at participating in their own tradition. Is something wrong with that?
Your name suits you!

Thomas McKenzie, Saturday, 8 October 2005 19:15 (eighteen years ago) link

Hahah, are you a troll? You're misconstruing what I said and being very pedantic. My friend works at a record where frequently Orthodox jews leave literature for employees of Jewish heritage, inviting them to partake in religious celebrations.

I'm sorry if I caused offense but my understanding was that many orthodox Jews were concerned about how secular some of their less traditional bretheren had become.

Jonothong Williamsmang (ex machina), Saturday, 8 October 2005 19:19 (eighteen years ago) link

I do have a problem when ignorance rules. I am not offended since I am not Jewish, but stupidity does irk me. Have you ever heard of a library? They might have one in your neighborhood! Go check it out.

I know for a fact that's bullshit. It's actually impossible on account of these "brisks" that they have just after they're born where they lob the penis off. I saw a thing on FOX about it.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Saturday, 8 October 2005 19:23 (eighteen years ago) link

Thermo,
Please read my comments. I think they apply to you as well!

Thomas McKenzie, Saturday, 8 October 2005 19:25 (eighteen years ago) link

Also, the bedsheet stuff was addressed way upthread.

You said that they were trying to convert Jews, as implied from the last clause in your sentence. If you knew anything about Judaism you wouldn't have written that.

Ok, right you're BORN a jew. But they try to "convert" them to following orthodox practices, etc.

Quit being such a fucking dick. Why do you care random person who has never posted here before?

Jonothong Williamsmang (ex machina), Saturday, 8 October 2005 19:34 (eighteen years ago) link

You cannot convert to Orthodoxy, that was my point about your ignorance. The profanity just reemphasizes my point. Are you the policeman for this site?

Thomas Mckenzie, Saturday, 8 October 2005 19:38 (eighteen years ago) link

From their point of view! I know plenty of jews who consider themselves atheists.

Jono,
My points were directed at other entries that preceded yours. Perhaps I overstated your ignorance, but I do find a lot of stupidity on this site, that's all. Educated jokes are cool, or, do you have to be stupid to be funny?

Thomas Mckenzie, Saturday, 8 October 2005 19:43 (eighteen years ago) link

I like both kind of jokes.

Some of the people posting today are trolling, Thomas as the sheet thing was addressed earlier in the thread. I think.

Jonothong Williamsmang (ex machina), Saturday, 8 October 2005 19:46 (eighteen years ago) link

Thomas you need to chill. The post is actually pretty clear; try reading it again.

When I was in college I used to get asked if I was Jewish by Orthodox Jews that came onto campus. My Jewish friends told me that if they said yes, they got hassled. The notion is that the people doing this concerned about the way that people who profess their faith practice it, not people of different faiths.

Laura H. (laurah), Saturday, 8 October 2005 19:46 (eighteen years ago) link

Laura and I think they additionally felt that you were "jewish" if your mother was regardless if you self identified as such!

Jonothong Williamsmang (ex machina), Saturday, 8 October 2005 19:50 (eighteen years ago) link

OK I'll chill. Perhaps the tone on this site seemed a bit offensive since I thought it was giving some misinformation.

Thomas Mckenzie, Saturday, 8 October 2005 19:52 (eighteen years ago) link

BTW the Kinsey Institute said that Orthodox Jews have more sex over a life time then most other people. Interetsting?

Thomas McKenzie, Saturday, 8 October 2005 20:31 (eighteen years ago) link

What I want to know is, what is UP with the public rudeness? I was on a v crowded train the other day and an older grey-bearded Hassid forced his way onto the train, TOTALLY smushing a young guy in front of me (who we'll call Max for ease of discussion). Other people on the platform who didn't bother trying to get on presumably said to themselves, "you know, I'll just wait for the next one, it's not worth shoving on there and being crammed into someone who'll be pissed at me" BUT NO this man keeps a completely blank look on his face, stares over all our heads, and forces himself up against Max like he's not even there, in the process dislodging Max's hold on the only pole he could possibly reach, and the whole time acting as if all the other passengers are furniture. The Hassid doesn't a) say excuse me or I'm sorry but it's an emergency, he maintains total silence and b) doesn't even flinch when Max says "Look, I'm sorry but there's no room, HEY I can't breathe!" Just keeps staring blankly and pushing. Deeply weird.

love the brisk/briss thing. isn't brisk a lithuanien stream of Orthodoxy, mithnagdik, opponents of hassidim! I think that it is how they refer to the Soloveitchik family! A sbriskers

a briss in brisk...

Jordan LeMonde, Sunday, 9 October 2005 05:22 (eighteen years ago) link

Yeah, slocki, sorry I wasn't clearer -- this isn't the first time I've witnessed a weird kind of oblivious rudeness from Hasidic men. For whatever reason I don't get the same vibe from women, but the men always seem determined not to notice or acknowledge anyone and the train thing was only the most recent and prominent example.

And I have some half-remembered thing in a far corner of my brain suggesting that it's a gender thing, that if Hasidic men see a woman improperly attired or otherwise err, what's the equivalent of treyf for social conduct? not-frum? anyway, that they'll ignore a woman because to appear to notice or otherwise be drawn into something not-frum would be contrary to the law. I know women don't have the same responsibilities in worship/observance that men do, don't know if that has anything to do with public social behavior.

I'm not asking you or anyone to draw any conclusions, per se, just wondering if there's a known basis for the weirdness.

I live in the same neigbourhood as s1ocki, although a little further to the northwest, where the population is predominantly comprised of Hasidic/Satmar/Lubavichs. My friend Charlotte works at the Hasidic bakery Cheskies, there's like some terribly joke there - a 'harlot serving hasidim. yuk yuk.
