Jenny, Thursday, 1 November 2007 20:53 (sixteen years ago) link

Hide the children.

jaymc, Thursday, 1 November 2007 20:54 (sixteen years ago) link

So our weekend is an hour longer. Nice.

KitCat, Thursday, 1 November 2007 20:56 (sixteen years ago) link

What's everyone doing for their long weekend?

KitCat, Thursday, 1 November 2007 20:56 (sixteen years ago) link

Seeing enough garage rock to kill a mule.

Laurel, Thursday, 1 November 2007 20:57 (sixteen years ago) link

Probably going you-know-where on Friday night. Haven't decided yet on the rest.

jaymc, Thursday, 1 November 2007 20:58 (sixteen years ago) link

You-know-where = a certain bar where a certain DJ is spinning.

jaymc, Thursday, 1 November 2007 20:58 (sixteen years ago) link

in NYC, I'm going to the FMU Record Fair then to see Warhol's Chelsea Girls.

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 1 November 2007 20:59 (sixteen years ago) link

Going to yoga at 9 am on Saturday with Jessifer and Jourtney. I haven't made any other plans.

Jenny, Thursday, 1 November 2007 21:00 (sixteen years ago) link

Were there any takers on a potential Saturday night karaoke outing? Hmm?

Jenny, Thursday, 1 November 2007 21:00 (sixteen years ago) link

I would sing with all this CHILXors.

jaymc, Thursday, 1 November 2007 21:01 (sixteen years ago) link

in NYC, I'm going to the FMU Record Fair
Is that the one Andy from 7secdelay talks about?

KitCat, Thursday, 1 November 2007 21:02 (sixteen years ago) link

the Hippie Parade, yes

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 1 November 2007 21:04 (sixteen years ago) link

Oh I would do karaoke on Saturday for sures. I thought you were talking about NEXT Saturday for some reason.

n/a, Thursday, 1 November 2007 21:12 (sixteen years ago) link

I have doubled commitments next Saturday - I'm working a lawyer dinner and then I'm jumping on the Lez Boat for drinks with Leslie et al. So this Saturday was what I was thinking.

Jenny, Thursday, 1 November 2007 21:25 (sixteen years ago) link

Dr. Morbius, you act like you're an old man.

Jesse, Thursday, 1 November 2007 21:44 (sixteen years ago) link

Jesse are you working Saturday?

Jenny, Thursday, 1 November 2007 21:45 (sixteen years ago) link

Dan, is this someone you've been on a date with before?

No but I have wanted to for a while so I am all aflutter.

dan m, Thursday, 1 November 2007 21:46 (sixteen years ago) link

You know what slang term I don't like? "Fuck with," meaning (as best as I can tell) "get into" or "experience." Could be that I've only ever heard it used by white hip-hop bloggers (as in "I haven't even fucked with that new Kanye album yet"), but it just kind of grates.

jaymc, Thursday, 1 November 2007 21:46 (sixteen years ago) link

And by "heard it used" I mean "seen it used."

jaymc, Thursday, 1 November 2007 21:47 (sixteen years ago) link

I have to go see Maps tonight at the Field Museum. Boo!

coco, Thursday, 1 November 2007 21:48 (sixteen years ago) link

xp - That's because a person would sound like a total assfaced bozo if they actually SAID that out loud.

La Lechera, Thursday, 1 November 2007 21:48 (sixteen years ago) link

(apologies to all those who have employed this term IRL)

La Lechera, Thursday, 1 November 2007 21:49 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah, sorry, deej.

jaymc, Thursday, 1 November 2007 21:50 (sixteen years ago) link

Haha. But you know, I'm fine with "fuck with" meaning "mess with," as in "Ah, lighten up, I'm just fuckin' with ya."

jaymc, Thursday, 1 November 2007 21:51 (sixteen years ago) link

Well, sure. That's well established.

La Lechera, Thursday, 1 November 2007 21:51 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah, to me "fuck with" implies some level of tinkering or changing. To my mind, you cannot "fuck with" the new Kanye album unless you were a producer.

Jenny, Thursday, 1 November 2007 21:52 (sixteen years ago) link

And by "heard it used" I mean "seen it used."

There's a new slang term blossoming in this sentence, though. You know the usual phrase "I'll wait for the DVD." With music it can be "I'll hear it used" (i.e., buy it used).

Eazy, Thursday, 1 November 2007 21:53 (sixteen years ago) link

It's more of a put-down than the DVD phrase, because it implies that it'll be easy to find in the used bins.

Eazy, Thursday, 1 November 2007 21:54 (sixteen years ago) link

Jenny- I'll probably be able to be up at Johnny's by 6:45 or so, you still up for a beer or two?

Laurel- Say goodbye to Joe and Xtine for me, they're leaving NYC for Pennsylvania. Cavestomp is their swansong, RIP the thing with two heads.

Dan- I did not notice you fluttering. Also, my mild dyslexia makes me think of fluffernutters when I see the word "fluttering".

chicago kevin, Thursday, 1 November 2007 21:54 (sixteen years ago) link

different "used" though

La Lechera, Thursday, 1 November 2007 21:54 (sixteen years ago) link

Here's the usage that got me riled up enough to post (from Tom Breihan's Village Voice blog):

There have been music-based video-games like Dance Dance Revolution in the past, but I haven't really fucked with them. Guitar Hero is impossible not to fuck with.

jaymc, Thursday, 1 November 2007 21:55 (sixteen years ago) link

I am a curmudgeonly late (usually never) adopter of slang. See: insider/outsider language. Very rarely am I on the "insider" side of things. That guy seems to be forcing his way inside by aggressively using this construction.

La Lechera, Thursday, 1 November 2007 21:56 (sixteen years ago) link

Jenny - No. I am not working.

John, etc.- what about: "Crack? No. I don't fuck with that."

Jesse, Thursday, 1 November 2007 21:56 (sixteen years ago) link

or "I've fucked around with Sudoku, but found I was too damn dumb to do it."

Jesse, Thursday, 1 November 2007 21:57 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah, it's different from what John said, but I can't wait to try it out.

"How about this Blackout, man?"
"I'll hear it used."

Of course, "used bins" won't exist much in a few more years.

xpost- it's possible not to fuck with Guitar Hero. Not owning a Playstation-type console and not spending time in the homes of those who do make it very possible.

Eazy, Thursday, 1 November 2007 21:57 (sixteen years ago) link

As someone with too much shit in a studio apartment, I am suddenly looking forward to the demise of the book and the compact disc.

Eazy, Thursday, 1 November 2007 21:58 (sixteen years ago) link

but fuck around with =/= fuck with most of the time

La Lechera, Thursday, 1 November 2007 21:58 (sixteen years ago) link

a home without books is a body without soul, eazy. cicero said that.

chicago kevin, Thursday, 1 November 2007 21:59 (sixteen years ago) link

except he left off the "eazy" part.

chicago kevin, Thursday, 1 November 2007 21:59 (sixteen years ago) link

Dan- I did not notice you fluttering. Also, my mild dyslexia makes me think of fluffernutters when I see the word "fluttering".

LaTeX code doesn't really do it for me... but trust me, every time I remember "oh yeah, date tomorrow" I get a little adrenaline shot.

dan m, Thursday, 1 November 2007 21:59 (sixteen years ago) link

i ain't got no soul.

chicago kevin, Thursday, 1 November 2007 21:59 (sixteen years ago) link

jon spencer said that.

chicago kevin, Thursday, 1 November 2007 21:59 (sixteen years ago) link

cool dan, i look forward to seeing you skipping around the office tomorrow.

chicago kevin, Thursday, 1 November 2007 22:00 (sixteen years ago) link

True Amanda. What about "I don't fuck with that shit" usage though?

Jesse, Thursday, 1 November 2007 22:00 (sixteen years ago) link

Kevin, Joe mentioned that move when I saw him at B&L's show! I barely know him, though, we prob won't like hang out this weekend or anything. Basically unless I can convince anyone to take my other ticket, I'm going to all three days alone.

I am really so sad and tired right now, I shouldn't be allowed near a computer.

Laurel, Thursday, 1 November 2007 22:00 (sixteen years ago) link

I think Cicero would include eBooks that I can read on my wristwatch.

Eazy, Thursday, 1 November 2007 22:01 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah Kevin! Ya mo be there.

Jenny, Thursday, 1 November 2007 22:02 (sixteen years ago) link

suerte, dan!

jesse - i dunno. i would imagine that it's the same type of usage as "fuck around with" but the person got lazy and dropped the "around" because phrasal verbs with two prepositions are unwieldy? i have no idea.

but i maintain that this is a matter of showing inclusivity into a group (hip hop enthusiasts?) and waving of the slang wang.

La Lechera, Thursday, 1 November 2007 22:03 (sixteen years ago) link

:( Laurel
