The REAL ‘Stuff White People Like’

^proven by science^

pissky in the jar (onimo), Thursday, 9 September 2010 14:47 (thirteen years ago) link

For instance, it turns out that all kinds of people list sushi as one of their favorite foods. But Asians are the only group who also list sashimi; it's a racial outlier. Similarly, as we shall see, black people are 20 times more likely than everyone else to mention soul food, whereas no foods are distinct for white people, unless you count diet coke.

Stuff White People on OK Cupid Like

Pleasant Plains, Friday, 10 September 2010 14:34 (thirteen years ago) link

the weirdest thing about those lists to me was that apparently the only middle eastern girls who use ok cupid are hipsters:

scarves
cat power
new wave
the unbearable lightness of being
baudelaire
impromptu
i love nature
exhibit
buddhism
quirky
sensitive
brooklyn

and most crucially

2) you don't tape the fucking thing with the intention of showing it off on youtube
3) you are on less of a broadway power trip

holy shit. The predictability is blowing my mind. Are these people copying each other or do they each think they've had an original idea or is it some combination of both? Does this aesthetic have a name? I've seen it before, have been mildly repulsed by it and dismissive of it, but I don't know how to categorize it for my own smug identity politics.

I knew a guy who was/is locally famous for making latte art and he was the only person I met with easily diagnosable narcissistic personality disorder.

Had never heard of kinfolk mag before finding that site but wow

What’s your favorite time of day to drink tea?
Funny, one of the original drafts for our website began with this tagline: All Day We Drink Tea. So yes, I drink tea when I feel like drinking tea, regardless of the time of day. While I usually have my tea and food separately, I’ve also been experimenting with food and cocktails prepared with tea. For example, dashi with a bit of roasted oolong added at the very end accentuates its smoky notes. As of late, I’ve been obsessing over tea-based cocktails. My latest after work drink is my take on an Old Fashioned, made with bourbon, maple syrup, yuzu, bitters and a 20-year aged oolong tea. It’s really delicious.

ngl, thought the grapefruit one was latte art at first and was reluctantly impressed. But now pretty sure its just two halves of a grapefruit

Most of these people seem to be pro or semi-pro photographers virtually pitching for work.

Kinfolk is very twee but aesthetically less objectionable than a lot of hipster stuff. They all seem to lead lovely lives of neatly arranged rustic tranquility but I wouldn't want to hear their music or read their novels.

Wristy Hurlington (ShariVari), Sunday, 1 February 2015 22:05 (nine years ago) link

what makes "hipster stuff" more objectionable?

Mistah FAAB (sarahell), Sunday, 1 February 2015 22:10 (nine years ago) link

Kinfolk is definitely hipster stuff as well. I tend to find their aesthetic brighter, prettier and less busy than a lot of similar magazines, though there's obviously a huge overlap with the terrible people in the artisan / Innocent Smoothies threads.

Wristy Hurlington (ShariVari), Sunday, 1 February 2015 22:24 (nine years ago) link

kinfolk is not hipster stuff. The aesthetic isn't hipster.

A Severus of Snapes (contenderizer), Sunday, 1 February 2015 22:36 (nine years ago) link

Hipster is a fairly malleable term but the urban-rustic, ecologically-minded, artisan-spoon-whittling thing that defines how most people where I live think of hipsterism is entirely in line with Kinfolk's shtick.

i'm getting a total connecticut vibe from this stuff

CoolRadio, Sunday, 1 February 2015 22:36 (nine years ago) link

hipster = engaged semi-desperately w/ pop culture, trying to stay ahead of it to maintain a position from which one can sneer at those less aware. therefore, it's constantly in flux. "urban-rustic, ecologically-minded, artisan-spoon-whittling" may for a moment seem hip, thus of interest to hipsters, but this too shall pass. hipster, in general, must be hostile, cynical, suspicious, and hungry to exclude/secede. anything that scans as complacent, domestic, conformist, comfortable, or middle class will eventually become the object of hipster contempt. e.g., the kinspiracy is hipster, kinfolk is just an urban and supposedly sophisticated spin on aspirational lifestyle bullshit.

A Severus of Snapes (contenderizer), Sunday, 1 February 2015 22:45 (nine years ago) link

if we go back to the theory posited by myself and my fellow Phd in Hipster Studies, Mr. Weingarten, that there are circles of hipsterdom, with the center being truly "hipster" and the outer circles having some overlap and proximity, this kinfolk stuff is in one of the outer circles ... understandably associated with hipster culture by someone quite unfamiliar with it, but to hipster scholars, laughably far from it.

Mistah FAAB (sarahell), Sunday, 1 February 2015 22:50 (nine years ago) link

I maintain that this is a natural evolution of hipsterism that only those close to the ground will truly recognise as such. It doesn't surprise me that those in the ivory towers of academia are taking a while to catch up.

Wristy Hurlington (ShariVari), Sunday, 1 February 2015 23:09 (nine years ago) link

this, ftr, is real-deal hipster shit. must proceed from assumption that when most people talk about "hipsters", all they're doing is making clear how far behind the curve they've fallen.

no offense, ms. hell. i tip my invisible and unwashed hat.

kinspiracy tumblr would have been better without the "white people" bit, just pandering to future denizens of a deeper circle of hell than that represented by the audience for "Kinfolk" itself.

(Surely this has been covered right? That they can't do this "white people" thing again without revealing their essentialist notions of other races? That other races aren't just "naturally creative," as their dopey little joke about making white people feel creative implies? That this is "natural rhythm" territory? That people in other races are just as good at being bourgeois and boring, and shouldn't have to endure a complex about it built around it being "acting white"?)
