haven't run in a week so psyched to finish my first attempt at 10k in an hour flat.
― Jesse James Woods (darraghmac), Tuesday, 6 April 2010 21:30 (fourteen years ago) link
I haven't posted here in a few days, but the weather has been nice and I'm running a lot. It's amazing how much better I feel if I'm out there four days a week. Getting new shoes as soon as I get my orthotics back.
― Jeff, Tuesday, 6 April 2010 22:25 (fourteen years ago) link
I am impressed by you guys
― ogmor, Tuesday, 6 April 2010 22:49 (fourteen years ago) link
Am feeling you here, forks! My calf is still a mess from straining it four weeks ago or so. Tried to run it off at first, but I think that's just made it a lot worse, so now I'm not running at all until it's fixed. Should have rested it straight away really. Hugely frustrating not being able to run, and all that fitness just being pissed away in the meantime. Brighton marathon in 10 days, I think I can now safely cross that one off the calendar. Booooo legs!

Oh come on Nick, you can still run the marathon... just go out, you know, really easy. Enjoy a good 5 hours on the course.

ha they're 1x current marathon runner and 1x former marathon runner. it's good high-level/long term goals motivation, but i'm not gonna let it dictate my pace for tonight or anything.

― forksclovetofu, Wednesday, 7 April 2010 13:44 (fourteen years ago) link
i think for some reason i just really dislike vocally competitive people. don't mind me. i'll be tooling along comfortably in the back of the group with no injuries and no puking.
― figgy pudding (La Lechera), Wednesday, 7 April 2010 13:50 (fourteen years ago) link
gotta be honest, when the older dude was running i'm pretty sure a mile was actually a shorter distance.
― Jesse James Woods (darraghmac), Wednesday, 7 April 2010 13:55 (fourteen years ago) link
it was one dinosaur length, which is actually shorter than a modern mile
― figgy pudding (La Lechera), Wednesday, 7 April 2010 14:00 (fourteen years ago) link
Oh come on Nick, you can still run the marathon...
Kind of wary about making things worse tbh. Might start the race and see how it goes though, have paid to do it after all.
Darraghmac, fuck those guys, everyone has to start somewhere.
― Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Farting in Space (NickB), Wednesday, 7 April 2010 14:00 (fourteen years ago) link
:-) I'm quite sure I run my own mouth off around the canteen to take a bit of stick back about it tbh.
― Jesse James Woods (darraghmac), Wednesday, 7 April 2010 14:04 (fourteen years ago) link
Yup, just take it easy.
Remember my race report involving the "uking" at mile 3, then pushing through 15 more? You can do this. ;)
― I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Wednesday, 7 April 2010 14:13 (fourteen years ago) link
Not sure if I really wanna uke tbh.

xp interval injury worry people - what surface are you running on? Doing your fast sessions on grass will be a lot kinder to your legs than other surfaces. Concrete paths in particular are lethal.
― seandalai, Wednesday, 7 April 2010 20:17 (fourteen years ago) link
Did 2.6 or so miles in 30 minutes tonight, walked about 1/4 of it.

I have been interval-ing on treadmill for ease of timing and speed control.
Just did a goodbye seattle 5 miles from my gym to down along the waterfront path and back. Windy, chilly, grey, waves crashy, rain spitting: it felt awesome and totally matched my mood.
― tehresa, Wednesday, 7 April 2010 21:32 (fourteen years ago) link
Skipped my interval workout last night. Drove 15 minutes with my fiance to the nearest middle school with a 1/4 mile track, and the lights were shut out, huge NO TRESPASSING signs at every gate threatening to call police on violators, etc. By the time I got home it was pushing 11pm so I cracked a beer and watched an episode of Dexter instead.
Tonight's plan is to head out the door, no map, no planned distance, just fucking run around like an animal. Fiance's working late so I'll take my phone and head home when she's doing the same. How many miles can I sneak in... that's the question.

Planning to just run, remember where I've turned on various streets, then use Gmaps Pedometer to figure out how far I've run once I have finished.

So, I made it about 8 miles altogether. She called once I was hitting my stride around 5-6, so turned around and called it a night.
Next time: 30 miles.

so strange on how the times when i start out and i feel like i'm dogging it, i end up picking up my game half way through and feeling like i can run forever.
I’m totally ready for that 4 mile on Sunday btw, I did 4 last night with relative ease. Amazing how fast my endurance has picked up just from running regularly for a few weeks now

7k in 37 minutes = the furthest I've ever run!! boo ya. building up to first 10k in about 6 weeks.

I posted this upthread last month:
I carry straight water for anything around 4+ miles/45 minutes or longer. At 7-8 I start carrying a sports drink (I use Heed, which is like Gatorade et al., without all the processed crap and corn syrup). Around half-marathon distance or longer I will carry a drink that also has some protein in it (my choice is Perpetuem; similar to Heed, but with a 3:1 ratio of carbs to protein).

I take along water for anything longer than about 8 miles or if it's ridic hot, and then I carry a few sachets of energy gel for anything further than 10 miles.
