lord knows, nothing you can do in America gets you hated more than doing a talk show

yeah that's a good idea. people who want something real bad, obtain it, and then get it taken away from them should just quit--great life advice

in fairness, maybe this is God's way of encouraging Conan to improve his golf handicap

how have leno's ratings been since his return?

i know he did well the first night, and dropped after that, but i haven't heard more since, say, the first full week ended. . .

You guys are right, a daytime talk show aimed for Gen Y is guaranteed to be a huge hit!

No doubt this 4pm time slot will enable him to really stretch out his creative muscles and do whatever he wants. The freedom! The freedom!

My advice to Adam Bruneau is to retire now.

It's impossible for him to retire, but the last two weeks of his Tonight Show run are probably going to be his peak in popularity and positive feeling. Fox show will be third-ranked vs. Leno and Letterman, may not even be as entertaining as Ferguson (who does the weird late-night thing better than Conan, tbh), will inspire a lot of "maybe NBC was right" stories, etc.

Letterman's morning show circa 1980-81 was sorta fascinating but in no way as fulfilling (for him or the viewer) as Late Night.

EXCLUSIVE: Does Max Weinberg Want to Be Jay Leno's New Bandleader?

Written by Kyle Buchanan | 06 Apr 2010, 5:10 PM | 11 comments

After the Late Night Wars toppled Conan O’Brien from The Tonight Show and reinstalled Jay Leno in his place, it seemed as though the battle lines had been drawn: on one side, there was Team Coco, on the other, Team Leno, and never the twain should meet. That’s what makes the news we’re about to reveal all the more surprising.

Sources tell Movieline that Conan O’Brien’s longtime bandleader Max Weinberg recently made overtures to Leno about joining the new Tonight Show as Leno’s bandleader. He’d be replacing Kevin Eubanks, who announced in February that he had plans to leave the show.

It’s a post that Weinberg has long coveted, though he only held it briefly during O’Brien’s truncated tenure. “I think one of the biggest thrills in my life was seeing my name in the same sentence as Doc Severinsen, who, in my view, is the gold standard for Tonight Show bandleaders,” Weinberg told Inside Jersey last August after assuming the gig. “There’s never been anyone who did it quite near the class and the brilliance of Doc Severinsen in the original Tonight Show Band. I used to think when I was a kid what a great job that must be — you know, same place, every time, everyday. Lo and behold, here I am 40 years later, doing it. That sounds deep, deep, deep, deep, deeply satisfying to me.”

In some ways, the news comes as a shock: even entering into discussions with Leno would mark Weinberg as a high-profile defector from the Conan camp, and could spark another round of backlash against Leno just as he’s settling into the Tonight Show.

Still, we hear that despite his long association with O’Brien, Weinberg was less than beloved by staffers. When O’Brien’s show was still located in New York, Weinberg would send interns to do gardening work at his house on the New Jersey shore, and would involve staffers in his pay disputes with the network — at one point, even enlisting an intern to tabulate every minute of screen time Weinberg had racked up over two years in an argument for a salary raise. Though several members of Weinberg’s band will be joining O’Brien during his live summer tour, Weinberg himself is conspicuously absent from the list.

When asked to address the matter, an NBC spokeswoman said only, “We are not commenting.” Reps for Leno and Weinberg have yet to get back to us.

Developing…

When they were auditioning bandleaders for the Conan Late Night, it came down to him and John Lurie. I always thought they made the wrong decision.

i've really enjoyed the Max Weinberg 7 over the years (as late night bands go), but it seems like i've heard before from a friend of a friend of a band i can't even remember anymore saying max was big, big douche

Conan's Max-led band was my absolute favorite out of all the late night shows, which is why it bums me out that Max sucks. Those fellas can groove.

All the other bands (Paul Shaffer, Kevin Eubanks, whoever is on Jimmy Kimmel's show) are so blah and sterile. The Roots get a pass because they're The Muthaf#%kin' Roots, but their best work is not on television.

Conan O'Brien coming to TBS
Posted: 12:44 PM ET

And the winner of the Conan O'Brien sweepstakes is ... TBS.

According to a press release sent out by the cable network (which, like CNN, is a unit of Time Warner), the comedian is joining TBS to host a late-night show that is expected to debut in November. O'Brien's show will be followed on TBS' schedule by George Lopez's "Lopez Tonight," which will move to midnight.

"In three months I've gone from network television to Twitter to performing live in theater, and now I'm headed to basic cable," O'Brien said in the statement. "My plan is working perfectly."

O'Brien is currently embarking on a nationwide comedy tour, but he made bigger headlines earlier this year when NBC decided to move Jay Leno back to "The Tonight Show's" late-night slot. O'Brien, who had been hosting "Tonight," left the network.

Oh well, hope the show's good; I'll never see it.

jam master (jaymc), Monday, 12 April 2010 16:55 (fourteen years ago) link

Well thank god he doesn't have to follow Lopez or even people with cable would never watch the show.

Of "Trade Federation" fame, (Viceroy), Monday, 12 April 2010 16:57 (fourteen years ago) link

In actuality, whether it would've been Fox (who currently has no late night audience) or TBS (who at least has original programming in that slot already) makes no difference. He'll rate behind Leno and Letterman. Since he's on cable, where rating aren't as important, maybe he'll be afforded the freedom to go back to a loose and bonkers kind of show.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 12 April 2010 16:57 (fourteen years ago) link

Has anyone talked to George Lopez yet about his show being pushed back an hour? Seems ironic.

According to TBS, talks began in earnest just last week -- and after "Lopez Tonight" star George Lopez personally gave O'Brien a call.

"I can't think of anything better than doing my show with Conan as my lead-in," Lopez said. "It's the beginning of a new era in late-night comedy."

Sounds like George is really just being a team player here.

Will they change the name of the Lopez show since it is technically not on at night anymore? (lol)

Actually, the more I read about, the more it sounds like Lopez played a big role in bringing Conan to TBS. Whether or not he'll one day be bitter about it remains to be seen, but he's got to know his chances of being watched are better with Conan as a lead-in than with some terrible Tyler Perry sitcom.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 12 April 2010 17:25 (fourteen years ago) link

I wonder why they didn't just put Conan on at 12 instead of 11? Surely Daily Show/Colbert will cut hugely into his ratings at that time.

Nhex, Monday, 12 April 2010 17:31 (fourteen years ago) link

I wish he was moving the show back to NYC, but it seems he's not. Comedians are just funnier in New York, aren't they?

Johnny Fever, Monday, 12 April 2010 17:55 (fourteen years ago) link

A basic-cable channel is one that's included in nearly all cable packages. Premium channels like HBO or Showtime cost extra.
