Talking about boobs seems kind of weird to me, I must admit, and I can't imagine it being anything other than super-awkward, unless it's w/yr s.o.

"Boob scotch"?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 08:59 (seventeen years ago) link

Shame! (xxpost)

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 08:59 (seventeen years ago) link

I always wondere why in America it is so TOXIC to show a boob. Boobs are awesome, why should they be covered? They fee babies! Everyone cried about Janet Jacksons at the superbowl, but whos gonna stop the video tapes of ass kickings? You can show boobs I say, and why not show less violence?

Boobs forever

I find it weird that random people (who the hell is "Eman"?) find it necessary to post nothing but "STFU". No one's forcing you to read the thread!

"Boob scotch" means feeding scotch to a boob?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 11:44 (seventeen years ago) link

it is STIRRED by the boob.

guns to deal with vodka (haitch), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 11:51 (seventeen years ago) link

jesus, you can't wilfully misinterpret boob scotch, it's like the simplest concept to grasp in existence!!

guns to deal with vodka (haitch), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 11:52 (seventeen years ago) link

What's the point of it tho?

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 11:53 (seventeen years ago) link

To see a boob, I'd guess.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 11:53 (seventeen years ago) link

That's what I suspected

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 11:54 (seventeen years ago) link

Tuomas your problem here is that you're confusing your lack of body-awkwardness with something that everybody should want to aspire to or possess naturally, and whether by dint of being born in Non-Finland or being raised by crypto-prudes most folks aren't that ready to just toss off millions of years of biological imperatives and act like it's all hunky-dory. It's the same impulse I daresay that makes certain caucasian folks think that if they achieve a certain level of "awareness" of race issues and they mean well they're allowed to use the n-word. Your heart may be in the right place but your head is in the fuckin' clouds, man.

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 12:32 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh, I have tons of body-awareness, but that doesn't stop me making fun of it. And I have female friends with a similar attitude towards the body, which leads to an occasional exchange of boob jokes or comparing of asses. However, I didn't mean to imply everyone should share this attitude. Since one's body-image is perhaps the most fragile part of many people's psyche, I wouldn't dare to apply the same standard to everyone.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 12:42 (seventeen years ago) link

?!?!!?!?!!?!?!?!!?!!?!?!?!?!!?!

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 12:43 (seventeen years ago) link

What?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 12:44 (seventeen years ago) link

I think that disclaimer should've gone somewhere much further towards the beginning of this thread.

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 12:45 (seventeen years ago) link

Hrm. I wouldn't be embarassed or offended by a friend commenting on my boobs, as long as it isn't a negative comment (oh my, yoúr boobs look awfully saggy today!). But that might be caused by the fact that I have really small boobs and don't perceive them as "erotic objects". So it's just another body part. Like the difference between nude ballerina's/modern dancers and nude pin-ups: the context defines the sexuality, I think. (ok sorry if this is a bit incoherent, this kind of weather makes my brain melt)

Eva van Rein (Gaia1981), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 12:54 (seventeen years ago) link

the context defines the sexuality

oh, suuuuuure.

Seriously, Try Punching This Guy in the Face and See What Happens (Enrique), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 12:56 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm actually not quite sure what I meant by that :P I guess I'm trying to say that there ARE situations where boobs lose their eroticism. Like in National Geographic documentaries, or at naturist campings or sth.

Lost eroticism?

Mädchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 13:04 (seventeen years ago) link

tombot in being a more convincing feminist than all the "sensitive" dudes on ilx put together non-shockah.

Except that it's a pile of bullshit.

Dan OTM! I understand what is trying to be said there but for quite a lot of ppl that still doesn't make them "lose their eroticism." Depends wholly on the viewer, doesn't it?

FWIW I really don't care if my male friends discuss or compliment breasts but I can see why it'd be a rather daft thing to just bring up out of the blue; you'd have to actually know the person you're talking to pretty well and know that it is something that wouldn't offend them or take them off guard. It's not a conversation for random mixed-sex acquaintances. But this has already been said.

Also: THE WORD "BOOBS" IS ENOUGH TO MAKE ME WANNA SLAP HALF OF YOU! Man, I hope you guys don't actually say "boobs" when talking about this stuff. Cos THAT is actually creepy.

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 13:07 (seventeen years ago) link

I think that disclaimer should've gone somewhere much further towards the beginning of this thread.

I think people on this thread have been to quick to generalize from what I've said. Just because I think there are ways to talk about bodies that aren't sexist or offensive doesn't mean everyone has the right to talk about anyone's body. Of course personal integrity comes first.

In my own case I've noticed that treating body issues with humour alleviates them at least a bit. Like my example of the ass comparing contest: I don't think either one of us are happy with our bottoms, but making this issue into a joke helps to deal with it, at least it does so with me.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 13:10 (seventeen years ago) link

Hrm, this makes me wonder if the male members of some tribe where the women walk around with bare breasts all day go: BOOBIES!! every five minutes?

Eva van Rein (Gaia1981), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 13:11 (seventeen years ago) link

Five MINUTES? That's generous.

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 13:14 (seventeen years ago) link

No, I don't think so. It depends on the viewer, in the sense of what's he's socialized to: the male tribesmen wouldn't probably find the boobs interesting, but an Western anthropologist might.

(x-post)

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 13:14 (seventeen years ago) link

So it is relative to context, but the viewer and the viewed are always part of that context too.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 13:15 (seventeen years ago) link

AND it makes me rethink my attitude towards Greek statues of naked people: I always supposed it was meant to be an image of the concept of beauty, but maybe they were just horny sculpturers. how sad :P

Oh, indeed. In my opinion, completely naked breasts aren't erotic at all, 99% of the time.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 14:08 (seventeen years ago) link

I think the big problem with TOMBOT's thought experiment is that most people (male and female) think breasts are visually pleasing and scroti are not. I can't fathom the context where someone genuinely, unironically says, "Hey, check out the scrotum over there! LOOKIN' GOOD!" And this is why I love America. (signed Hunter, Age 3)
