we dont get big concerts at my school, mostly just smaller LA bands like silver daggers, kind hearts and coronets abe vigoda, and best of all ZOLAR FUCKING X who ruled. (all those bands brought by the radio station BTW; our programming board doesnt do a goddamn bit of work)

max, Thursday, 26 April 2007 21:27 (seventeen years ago) link

we had naughty by nature my fresh year

deej, Thursday, 26 April 2007 21:30 (seventeen years ago) link

It obv. varies from school to school, but most of the time the quality of the shows booked just relies on whether the folks with good taste are the type to give a shit and get somewhat involved in campus life.

Often having one of the 5-10 votes on who the activities board books involves little more effort than showing up at some basement for half an hour and putting your name on a list.

I mean, I can never be bothered, but still.

Freshman year, when I was at Carbondale, we had Dave Chapelle come like a few episodes into the first season of the show. This, thank god, was right before any of the annoying-ass catchphrases attacked our nation's college campuses like a plague.

haha table at least 2 of those bands have ilxors in them!

FYI Western KY University is in Bowling Green, KY, not BGSU.

nickalicious, Thursday, 26 April 2007 21:43 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh wait, I see now that jaymc.xls already addressed this. SORRYS.

nickalicious, Thursday, 26 April 2007 21:43 (seventeen years ago) link

Stevie we have one big concert a year and I'm never that excited about it - actually, ours is tonight, and I'm not going because it's Thursday, which is NOT the fucking weekend yet. I'd actually like to go, but I have an absolutely mandatory class presentation tonight. I'm sure it's cheaper on a Thursday, though.

There are a couple concerts a year that the radio station puts on, but I only went to one in the fall, the one they had a couple weeks ago was on a Monday. A MONDAY! Again, mandatory class thing, for the exact same class, which happens to be the one I hate the most. Would it be so hard to schedule a concert on a Friday or Saturday? My school is way too small.

Sorry for the vitriol, I'm exhausted and a little annoyed at all the fun I'm missing for the sake of a subject I don't even like but need as the last course for my major.

Maria, Thursday, 26 April 2007 21:45 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm in lol college too. But i don't have anything remotely as great as an activities board or whatever. People just come to their classes and get the fuck out once they're over. Which is prolly one of the reasons why i've stopped going to the classes.

Jibe, Thursday, 26 April 2007 21:51 (seventeen years ago) link

admittedly, when i was doing most of the booking for the board, i skipped class a lot. when the punks came and then excepter came a few days later, i didn't go to class at all.

our program board had battles last week, yo la tengo last night, and hold steady/thermals tonight

impudent harlot, Thursday, 26 April 2007 22:14 (seventeen years ago) link

I saw Buffalo Tom at an RMIT freshman gig and they (the band) were all REALLY REALLY drunk.

Trayce, Thursday, 26 April 2007 22:40 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh Jeuseus I sure adore some Sleepytime Gorilla Museum.

Abbott, Thursday, 26 April 2007 22:41 (seventeen years ago) link

The Thermals put on a great show.

Buffalo Tom were one of the best shows I've ever seen surprisingly.

I was on the program board when I was at NYU but I can't remember what we brought to campus. I was mostly drunk at that time.

Duke (where I work, not where I go to school) had Clap Your Hands Say Yeah opening for T.I., which I almost went to because that is the funniest concert lineup I have ever heard

apparently everyone booed CYHSY and T.I. showed up late because he was hangin' out at P.F. Chang's and then left after half an hour (to go back to Chang's? WHO KNOWS)

Next year I'll be at the Sciences Po, which I guess gives me even less reason to post.

Oooh, i just had an interview with them this morning! How easy is it to get to Sc Po from abroad?? Are you an exchange student or will you be a Sc Po student?

Jibe, Friday, 27 April 2007 09:35 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh Jeuseus I sure adore some Sleepytime Gorilla Museum.

They were such nice people! I hung out with them for a while before their set, and then they came on and totally freaked the shit out of me. It was so shocking, for some reason, that these friendly and relatively normal-seeming people were such fuckin freaks.

Any other business majors in this bitch? Can we network or something?

31g, Friday, 27 April 2007 14:12 (seventeen years ago) link

i was almost an econ minor. then this shitface gave me a B- in his class because I wrote a paper on Bolivia's cocaine trade-- a subject he wasn't fond of-- despite the fact that the paper was well-written and all my other grades were great. i really liked his class, too: Economic Development in Latin America. endlessly interesting.

well, it was that and the fact that oberlin's econ dept. is full of pervs.

the table is the table, Friday, 27 April 2007 14:26 (seventeen years ago) link

I actually might change my major to Econ or something else, I've only been in business for a semester. I basically waited as long as I possibly could to declare a major.

Also, I don't know if this is unique to film school, or unique to my school, but if I'm taking a senior level class, and all the students are seniors, can we not spend the first two weeks going over the exact same shit we learned in our very first film class? Please?

GAH I KNOW HOW MANY TIMES DO I HAVE TO LEARN WHAT THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD IS? Oh right, in every single upper and lower division science class.

Abbott OTM. Especially annoying when you already have a biology degree.

i am old and still an undergrad (this is my second attempt at getting my BA).

jesus christ i am so fucking over it. it's my own fault really - i've managed to drag this second attempt out to 4 freakin' years. one class this trimester, one over summer, and if i actually manage to pass both i'll be graduating in may. i'm sick of retards. seriously, even at 300-level, the people in my english lit classes who can't actually read.... fucking amazing. the whole system appears to be a joke.

and i feel completely ill-prepared for a 'real job'.

I went to a brunch for MFAs and two Korean girls asked me if I liked Harry Potter, David Beckham, The Beatles and "The Woman King".

admrl, Monday, 10 September 2007 03:42 (sixteen years ago) link

They also asked me to sing them a Beatles song. I said no.
