I can confirm that it will be Riche on 3rd December. Stockholmers come along.

Tag (Tag), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 09:19 (nineteen years ago) link

if i go to stockholm and not berlin for the 1st week of december, i'll come say hello. i think i might know what you look like from the s1n1ster website, and also my ex-roommate lucas said he met you once.

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 10:23 (nineteen years ago) link

It scares me when people remember me from s1n1ster. Oh, I remember Lucas. How is he these days?

Tag (Tag), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 11:43 (nineteen years ago) link

I will try my best to make it along to Riche on the 3rd. I shall be arriving in Stockholm around midday Thursday 2nd and leaving late on Sunday 5th. I have heard that the ship, the Varsa (sp?) is worth checking out. I am staying south of Gamla Stan on the island of Södermalm.

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 29 November 2004 22:32 (nineteen years ago) link

is it more Swedish than Malmo?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 29 November 2004 22:36 (nineteen years ago) link

Three days and counting...come and say hello if you make it to Riche.

Tag (Tag), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 13:05 (nineteen years ago) link

will do - soon as I find out where it is!

MarkH (MarkH), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 13:22 (nineteen years ago) link

If you guys are in town on Saturday - there's a really great club you should come to. It's my bf's record label hosting a thing at a place called H62, it's on Hornsgatan 62 on Södermalm. Four bands/acts playing, all of them fucking brilliant: The Embassy (dancey smart pop music), The Field (ambient laptop dreamy trance-ish), Differnet (a wonderful marriage between chopped up electronics and pop, with soft and cool vocals and Peter Hook-bass), Viktor Sjöberg (soft electronics).

More info here: www.friendlynoise.tk

I don't know if I'll make it to Riche but do come to the Friendly Noise thing, and if you do make sure to say hi! I l.o.v.e. all the acts playing. You will too. :-)

Hey you might find this handy: http://kartor.eniro.se/ if you don't know your way around Stockholm... (Type in street, number, and city, and press "sök", and you'll get a handy little map to print out.)

Hanna (Hanna), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 13:34 (nineteen years ago) link

that is so cool - cheers Hanna! Hornsgatan's very close to where I'm staying too.

MarkH (MarkH), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 14:03 (nineteen years ago) link

Will make an effort to make it on the Sat, but I have a feeling it's my friend's birthday party that night.

Tag (Tag), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 15:00 (nineteen years ago) link

Hey Tag, you and my boyfriend have met, he says, years ago at some B&S concert in Stockholm. Also, is it Marcus T's club you're dj:ing at? I know him!

Hanna (Hanna), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 19:03 (nineteen years ago) link

Hanna, do you still look like this?

http://www.imomus.com/hannastefan.jpeg

I have met Tag so I can remember what he looks like - I was going to say "recently" until I remembered it was at Club Freaky Trigger at Parker Place, so it can't have been very recent at all!

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 15:04 (nineteen years ago) link

Heh, yes I still look sort of like that, but on Saturday probably more drunk like this (except no headphones):

Hanna (Hanna), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 15:19 (nineteen years ago) link

Yes, it is all arranged by Marcus T. I've met your boyfriend? It is possible, as I did go see B&S in Stockholm a few year back. Who is he?

Mark, I may have more "facial topiary" than when you met me.

Tag (Tag), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 17:01 (nineteen years ago) link

Tag, he's on that first pic. His name is Stefan. He was on Sinister back then I think. Never mind, he just said he recognised your name and that you'd met.

Hanna (Hanna), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 21:18 (nineteen years ago) link

It's a nice place I guess, but I'm somewhat bored with this city. It's too small for me. I'm moving to London. But I'll spend the summers in Stockholm though. Nothing beats the summers in Stockholm.......winter just started.....fuck.

How's the weather right now? Can I pack my bikini?

Tag (Tag), Thursday, 2 December 2004 13:22 (nineteen years ago) link

The last of the snow is just melting away. Couple of degrees over zero Celsius. Might rain a little during the weekend. Pack your sensible shoes and a sweater.

Go to the Tivoli, it's awesome. If you like the Jetsons. I like Sodermalm. Also the modern art museum is really good.

I love Stockholm so much that I am moving over in 3 weeks! Goodbye Sheffield, hello Stockholm!

Morley Timmons (Donna Brown), Thursday, 3 March 2005 22:23 (nineteen years ago) link

it felt a bit too quiet when we were there - not many people around, not much going on, but it was a nice city to walk around and the museums were cool. Skansen is lovely to walk around and you could do so for a good two or three hours - i didn't mind the 'fakeness' of it, it's only vaguely theme park and just feels like a cute miniature world and glimpse of another place and time, with owls! it all felt American suburb/smalltown between there and Grona Lund but i'm not sure what i'm basing that on - maybe the degree of snow, space, pretty houses, open streets...really lovely but very quiet. the ferry from Djurgarden to Slussen is all too brief but i just love ferries - really wish we could've made the excursion to Vaxholm as i'm told that's beautiful too. i can't speak for the nightlife sadly but there seemed to be some good coffeeshops and bars scattered around but very expensive to drink generally.

how long does it take to get to malmo on the train?

charltonlido (gareth), Saturday, 23 April 2005 09:34 (nineteen years ago) link

Stockholm to Malmö takes about 4½ hours by regular train, or roughly 2½ hours I’d say by X2000 (high-speed, high-price train).
Alternatively, if you book ahead you could fly on the snålskjutsen service, a snip at 290kr (otherwise it’s about 850-900kr), and it only takes about an hour and a half in a nippy little plane.

David Merryweather (DavidM), Saturday, 23 April 2005 10:22 (nineteen years ago) link

Sven Bastard: If you’re interested in the archipelago I recommend a visit to either Svartsö or Gällno. Both pastoral idyls of forests, lakes, rocky shores, deer, not overcrowded (like Vaxholm) and beautiful in the summer. Plus the ferry ride is longer and even more picturesque.

David Merryweather (DavidM), Saturday, 23 April 2005 10:31 (nineteen years ago) link

No, Stockholm-Malmö = more like 6 hours regular train, 4½ hours x2000 train! Flying won't save you that much time or money what with bus rides to/from airports etc.

Hi there!

Hanna (Hanna), Sunday, 14 January 2007 21:54 (seventeen years ago) link

We're in Sodermalm! (Madchen and I are, I mean). We don't want to go home, although the snow today was horizontal. We're going to see the Vasa tomorrow and be tourists. It'd be great to FAP, but I think we have to be on the airport bus at 18. Maybe next time?

stet (stet), Monday, 15 January 2007 00:45 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah next time! Man, you managed to pick the wrong weekend weather-wise, Sunday was so so crappy. Hope you had a good time anyway! Have fun at the Vasa.

Hanna (Hanna), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 07:22 (seventeen years ago) link

Sunday we went to the cinema. It was about all I could cope with!

im going to stockholm!! i arrive on the 2nd and leave on the 10th. what things should i do? im looking for both daytime sights (museums, galleries, tourist attractions, record and general shopping) and nighttime stuff (bars, clubs, etc.) is it going to be really unbearably cold?

max, Friday, 21 December 2007 19:04 (sixteen years ago) link

I was there in August. Definitely go to to Moderna Museet, and try some sushi. The city library is pretty amazing to see (it's all round and stuff) and the Vasa Museet, so amazing you'll ignore the groups around you.
Shopping is basically the same as most european capitals, H&M everywhere, but you'll get some good Scandinavian design.
They say it will be cold, but so cold it will just be dry. Wrap up.
i forget what Island I was on with the cool bars. the metro is great!

o-ess, Saturday, 22 December 2007 11:08 (sixteen years ago) link

bump in case anyone who has suggestions missed this last time around

max, Saturday, 29 December 2007 16:35 (sixteen years ago) link

It isn't very cold, just rainy and dreary. Go to Södermalm for Swedish hipsters and some shopping and getting drunk, go to St Eriksgatan for record stores, take a walk round Gamla Stan (old town) if you don't mind other tourists, and yea Moderna Muséet is nice.

six years pass...

Gonna be in Europe this spring and thinking about dropping into Stockholm and Oslo. My question is whether 3 nights in each is enough - keeping in mind my main objective is to explore the city by foot and maybe take in a museum, rather than visiting specific things. Also, I typically walk a lot when visiting cities, so can cover a lot of ground.

I obviously realize not all Scandinavian cities are the same, but I can't help compare to Copenhagen, which I decidedly can "do" in 3 nights.

Any and all advice is greatly appreciated!

Fiddler on a hot tin roof (ed.b), Wednesday, 16 April 2014 00:02 (ten years ago) link

3 nights in Stockholm and Oslo each, that is.

Fiddler on a hot tin roof (ed.b), Wednesday, 16 April 2014 00:03 (ten years ago) link

I feel Oslo can definitely done in 3 nights. Stockholm, being a pretty big archipelago, will be a bit more challenging to do by foot. There's a metro system though, so I think it could be done. Have been there only once though, as a kid some 30 years, so can't tell from recent experience. Have fun! I'm considering Norway for a holiday again this year, such a beautiful country. Will you be "just" visiting the capitals? Asking because the nature's beautiful in both Sweden ánd Norway, great for hiking.

willem, Wednesday, 16 April 2014 07:50 (ten years ago) link

Stockholm is bigger (geographically, demographically, culturally) than the other Nordic capitals, so I'd spend a bit longer there than in Oslo. Probably more historical sights there too, since it used to be the central hub for this whole area. And yeah, Willem is right, Stockholm is not as walkable as, say, Copenhagen or Helsinki, due to its size. You should probably get a metro card.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 16 April 2014 08:54 (ten years ago) link

Thanks!

Fiddler on a hot tin roof (ed.b), Wednesday, 16 April 2014 16:33 (ten years ago) link

I think that Stockholm is walkable as long as you're up for walking and you can def see most of it in 3 days/nights (and catch Skansen/Vasamuseet or sth) but it can't hurt to use metro options too.
