Picked up on New Years Day appropriately enough:

Shuly Nathan - An Outing (late 60's Hebrew folk -- Israeli label, great cover)
Charles Mingus - Black Saint and The Sinner Lady (a little rough but cheap and mono. curiously has the name 'jaxon' written on the inside of the gatefold)

this morning for a buck a piece:

the originals - california sunset (nice 70's motown soul)

incredible string band - the big huge

src - milestones (wahoo! needed this record. cover is a little beat up, but the vinyl is nice. sounds amazing.)

george danzer & band - jetzt oder nie (completely bonkers german record from 1982. included inside is a full page letter from some german dude to an american girl explaining why he was giving her this record for christmas. he went and saw the movie ET for the second time in a week and it still could not make him cry! so german.)

grand funk railroad - on time (2 copies actually. they were both in great shape and i couldn't resist. plus, one of my fave records ever too.)

linda hopkins - s/t (funky early 70's soul record. very aretha.)

the tymes - the sound of the wonderful tymes (parkway doo wop)

don shirley - the gospel according to don shirley (jazz piano don doing gospel tunes)

ellen mcilwaine - everybody needs it (had this years ago and didn't play it much. jack bruce on bass.)

john dankworth & orchestra - the $1,000,000 collection (dankworth has some pricey records out there - mostly cuzza the breaks - this isn't one of them. still cool moody mod jazz stuff on this though.)

santana/mclaughlin - love devotion surrender

savage grace - s/t

murari - s/t (hippie commune album from 1979 and which sells for, like, nothing, but i couldn't remember if i'd heard it or not. probably heard it and forgot all about it.)

the cowsills - s/t (i've been getting into the cowsills lately. god help me. especially the later stuff.)

peter stampfel & the bottlecaps - s/t

eric anderson - a country dream

busoni - doktor faust (dgg boxed set)

pepsi 1970 (boxed set of pepsi jingles featuring bonnie dobson/johnny cash/loadstone/odetta/tammy wynette/bb king/patti austin/mongo santamaria/friends of distinction/three dog night)

pepsi 1971 (double album of pepsi jingles featuring johnny cash/ides of march/ronnie dyson/bb king/bj thomas/delanie and bonnie/roberta flack/tammy wynette.)

steven quarella - book of love (private press xian 70's folk. hey, you never know...)

scott seward, Wednesday, 20 January 2010 19:23 (fourteen years ago) link

nice grabs skot!

can someone advise me about later incredible string band records? i have 5000 spirits, hangman's beautiful daughter, and wee tam, and im always looking for a copy of the s/t. but i see a bunch of the others around, too. anyone wanna weigh in on rankings of big huge/liquid acrobat, U, changing horses, i looked up, etc etc etc?

69, Wednesday, 20 January 2010 19:45 (fourteen years ago) link

i love U and hard rope & silken twine

The Book of Eli Porter (ojo), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 20:05 (fourteen years ago) link

wee tam/big huge, either seperately or together is essential. i dunno, i say buy any isb if you see it for a good price. changing horses was never a fave of mine, yet, i really like stuff on earthspan and liquid acrobat, and hard rope and silken twine. so, there is plenty of goodness in the later albums.

scott seward, Wednesday, 20 January 2010 20:08 (fourteen years ago) link

word. i saw like all of the albums (except s/t) at amoeba LA this past weekend, and i was tempted...

69, Wednesday, 20 January 2010 20:17 (fourteen years ago) link

wau, SRC for a buck is great! so is the big huge!
and i think i need that ellen mcilwaine record. my jam on the murari record is "Adore, Adore Ye All." I have two Murari recs.

and a bunch of dollar records. some new wave, some new age, some jazz.

mason proffit - wanted! (surprised there's no discush of these dudes on the country-rock threads.)

always wondered if they had other songs besides "Two Hangmen." that track was one of those weird "local favorites" that inexplicably always got played on classic rock radio when I was growin up (KSHE-95 St. Louis Missouri)

Etron Fou Leloublan - Les Sillons de la Terre

this is v v good iirc

Walter Carlos - Switched On Bach

Blade Runner FAKE ost - doh thought it was the vangelis one but i looked closer now and it looks like it's going to be like an orchestra redoing the vangelis stuff : (

Matt Llama - The Witch Channel - hairy scary improv/jazz/prog/psych/parts that sound like cluster, etc pretty ace...my store's been getting lots of weird limited edition hand screen printed shizz like this and i liked the artwork...pretty great actually

Bob Dylan - Infidels

Vermonster - Instinctively Inhuman - can't wait to listen to this...weird ass hand drawn black and white cover, 12 inch with only 2 songs - one is a 16+ minute version of Black Sally by Dennis Wilson, the other side is 20+ minute song called "Stoned Guitar".....from 1991, on a label called "Twisted Village" listed as a PO box in Windham, CT....vanity press I guess...

you forgot what a hardcore blogger is (M@tt He1ges0n), Saturday, 23 January 2010 20:32 (fourteen years ago) link

Twisted Village is the label run by Wayne & Kate of the band Major Stars! Also they're both in Vermonster. And they have a store in boston called Twisted Village, but they were orig based in CT.

lol I made that same mistake. it's not very good

dmr, Saturday, 23 January 2010 23:34 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah it sucks, really gloppy bad pops orchestra type arrangements with some corny synths

of course head heritage has a blurb on vermonster, which has proven to be pretty brain melting! good score for $9

skot I've been on a huge classical jag lately, it's kinda been all I have been listening to (well, except for Friday and Saturday nights when I get drunk and listen to Black Sabbath and The Band and post on ILV.) I even just donated 50 bucks to our local classical station during their Fall fund drive! and I am going to two Chicago Symphony Orchestra concerts this month (Boulez, conducting Schoenberg, Debussey, and Ligeti -- so super psyched.)

but the weird thing is, I never feel compelled to buy the stuff on vinyl. I dunno why. maybe always assume that "any* surface imperfections will mar the listening experience? in a way that they won't with rock? i dunno what it is. i never check the classical sections at my local stores

any *LIVING STEREO* items in yr haul??

i want this one

whoa awesome lot scott

69, Saturday, 20 November 2010 23:21 (thirteen years ago) link

just listening to a wonderful hungarian folk box from that haul. so good. (gonna keep it. i'm definitely having fun. so much of this is mint unplayed audiophile stuff. wish i had a zillion dollar stereo system. but even without one it all sounds so good.)

i've always bought classical records. and i've learned a lot over the years. i've always said that they are the best value in all of record collecting. its not unlikely at all to find pristine euro-pressings in thrift stores for a dollar. so many classical fans belonged to clubs and they would get stuff every month and never listen to half of it twice. listening to a virgin classic digital pressing from germany now and its sonic heaven.

scott seward, Saturday, 20 November 2010 23:43 (thirteen years ago) link

and if people are intimidated by classical don't be! just dig in! you can totally own heaven for a dollar.

scott seward, Saturday, 20 November 2010 23:45 (thirteen years ago) link

all that guy's home-made cassettes were up for auction too! and reel to reels. and all the cool wooden tape dressers too! i call them dressers. i don't know what to call them. they have drawers. for tapes. like those fancy cd ones. he also had this HUGE wooden cd carousel and i don't think anyone bought it. i thought about getting it for the store but it weighed a ton. plus fuck a cd. and his card catalog for his collection was there.

scott seward, Saturday, 20 November 2010 23:49 (thirteen years ago) link

if i had had the money i totally would have gone for the CDs though. i don't think i've ever seen a more comprehensive or immaculate classical cd collection. thousands and thousands of them. and all collector euro stuff. unbelievable. the guy who bought them isn't even a dealer. he just has a huge cd collection and needed some classical!

scott seward, Saturday, 20 November 2010 23:51 (thirteen years ago) link

and if people are intimidated by classical don't be!

see, thing is, I'm not intimidated by the genre itself -- I know the composers I love (Mahler, Sibelius, Haydn, Shostakovitch foremost among many), and own tons of crap on CD

I just have this weird ass aversion to classical LPs. it's a hang-up, i know

estoy en buenos aires y encuentro una tienda mas wack con el nombre GUITARRAS. dude had some gross stacks of swag and some OG prestige record in the bin marked at 1000 pesos (bw 200 and 300 USD). he also had two separate storerooms of records that he wouldnt open for me, and when i went to check some rotary connection LP to see if pete cosey was on it, he got mad! i tried to explain, but he wasnt feelin me in general i guess. :( im just venting, im sure i was just annoying him while he diddled his guitar.

then hit this lil mall store (lotsa these weird lil mall stores here...) called abraxas and picked up the slapp happy/henry cow LP, francis monkman's ENERGISM on innovative communications, and some rando italo 12" that will maybe be good.

in general, the trip has been a total blast. lots of walking, lots of empanadas y cervezas, and TONS of feral cats, which is annie's total #1 dream.

more to come! abrazos.

Did OK on a batch of '50s 45s that I got for $10, most of which I didn't know. Some good doo wop sides (Passions, Impalas, Innocents, Crests) and two Eddie Cochran records. Actually, one of the records I bought because it had Kenneth Gamble's name on it and it turned out to be a really good early soul single: "Who Do You Love"/"Oh So Soon" by the Sapphires.

I also got the Bobby Fuller Four's first lp.

found copies of the first three pescado rabioso LPs and an almendra or two at G@LLO C@NTARO, but the prices were a lil loco. i tried to get dude down to $50USD on the third pescado rabioso LP, but he wouldnt bite. more than that, and its silly for me to buy it here imo...

just got one lil thing today from a cool jazz record store in the same mini-mall as G@LLO C@NTARO:

they offered at the jazz place to go buy me a coffee while i browsed, which was extremely nice. oh and PS, g@llo c@ntaro dude also fell asleep while i was in the store LOL.

cheating because I don't have this on vinyl (yet) but I think this Jim Sullivan reissue on Light in the Attic is right up ILV's alley. title track is killing me lately. cosmic folk/psych with orchestra backing from David Axelrod's session musician crew.

went a little nuts at the record show. its safe to say that i won the volume buying prize. but everyone has a singular purpose in life, right? i sold too though and i did come out ahead. had a great time too. kid, candy store, etc. talked to everyone. or it seemed like i did. everyone in good spirits. got:

genuine john - s/t

neu! '75 (sealed reissue)

mantronix - in full effect (buying back records i stupidly got rid of years ago is a full time job)

artful dodger - honor among thieves (perfect promo copy)

strongbow - s/t (excited to get this)

wildweeds - s/t (also a nice promo copy)

gary moore band - grinding stone (minty u.k. copy)

the crome syrcus - love cycle

revolutionary blues band - s/t (this is pretty bad, but it was cheap)

ross - the pit & the pendulum (when your want list includes this album you are on to something. or you are me.)

the east side kids - the tiger and the lamb (again, not great, but cheap. a copy should come in psych collector starter kits.)

jerry garcia - reflections ( beautiful unplayed german pressing! soooooo pretty. i got this late in the day too for ten bucks. can't believe nobody else picked it up.)

mantronix - needle to the groove 12 inch

urszula dudziak - newborn light

dmz - s/t

flamin groovies - flamingo

the only ones - special view

machiavel - mechanical moonbeams

fastbuck - s/t

little village - s/t (this was a serious find for me. and i'm probably the only person who would have bought it, so, its a good thing i found it)

michael urbaniak/urszula dudziak - heritage

archie shepp - poem for malcom

julius brockington - the united chair

dave burrell - echo

brute force - s/t

wilkinson tri-cycle reissue

mike batt - zero zero

ray and his court - s/t (scorpio-esque boot/reissue)

fuzzy haskins - radio active

doctors of madness 2 album set

marseille - s/t

swans - holy money (again with the buying back of old stuff thing)

murphy's law - s/t (ditto. i've always enjoyed this album a great deal.)

disciple - come and see us as we are!

bronco - country home

van der graaf - the quiet zone/the pleasure dome

kannibal komix - s/t (now i don't need to steal herb alpert's copy)

bullangus - s/t (clean promo copy! )

the winkies - s/t

hanson - now hear this

nova - blink

katahdin - hardcore rock n' rolla

bang - s/t ( i think this was the most i paid for a record at the show. probably ended up costing me 35 bucks. but its a decent copy and i need a decent copy. sadly, its STILL not the copy i want to be buried with. but i'm always looking.)

sunny murray - sunshine

gilgamesh - another fine tune you've got me into

scott seward, Sunday, 5 December 2010 21:30 (thirteen years ago) link

and i really spread the love/money around. i bought records from andy, josh, the old psych guy, the main street people, gio, mark z, that other guy whose name i can't remember, ian, malcom, and chris c.

scott seward, Sunday, 5 December 2010 21:36 (thirteen years ago) link

the old psych guy kills me. his prices are sometimes appropriate and sometimes too high, but he's got the goods. my pal conrad got the deal of the day though. 15 bucks for the first kingdom come album. i cried a little. conrad was very happy to buy a candlemass record from me. sometimes its the little things in life...

scott seward, Sunday, 5 December 2010 21:40 (thirteen years ago) link

a case of too high would be, like, 90 bucks apiece for magna carta records i need. but he's a jovial guy. i got no problem with people testing the limits of the marketplace.

scott seward, Sunday, 5 December 2010 21:41 (thirteen years ago) link

after years of being sniped, i finally got a reasonably priced copy of Ben Sidran's "Feel Your Groove" and listening to it now again, I'm kinda under enthused :-/
