--disconnected externalized and unrecognizable signifying structure (nakhchivan)

The appearance of chirpy Geordie Christian Steel, skating on in his Heelys and comedy hair at least heralded some straight stand-up, even if he stuck firmly to dick jokes, Geordie stereotypes (they don’t feel the cold, you know) and rape. His material was base, but he was chipper enough and if he moved out of the Viagra and masturbation area, he might have the makings of an entertainer.

Any utter filth in Oman who attend this show should really be treated like the aryan equivalent of ISIS jihadis on any attempted return to the UK.

Christian Steel, a graduate of London's Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, first began performing stand-up comedy in October 2005.

As an actor, he was offered the male lead in The Graduate in the West End opposite Jerry Hall, but turned it down to play Peter 'Geordie' Gardner in BBC's Second World War film Night Flight alongside Edward Woodwood.

john wahey (NickB), Wednesday, 26 November 2014 21:35 (nine years ago) link

xp yeah it doesn't really undermine your point and also feels contextually true to the Liverpudlian version of the same working class nostalgia the other events play on

Kindon i remember as "a Wolves player in the 70s" and basically nothing else, i raised an eyebrow at the ticket price

that liverpool team was notably cosmopolitan for that era, their best players were mostly celtic, their gk fought in the rhodesian bush war, winger son of a jamaican colonel

aston villa's europea cup side was much more real

that cosmopolitanism is part of the "legend of Liverpool" as city and club, as interzone where foreign cultures arrive in the UK and take root, as trailblazer for where the rest of the country will arrive at eventually - so yes the "local journeyman" is only one version of legend status for Liverpool FC unlike my fiercely provincial birthplace

what it feels like for a guelph (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 26 November 2014 21:48 (nine years ago) link

the working class nostalgia aspect is very acute, i can just about remember a time when this very english almost nativist white bloke culture and football seemed inexorably fused as one and the same, this is a world is where the years of sanitization never happened

'micky hazard' is such an 80s legend name

the london area ones seem a bit more cosmopolitan too, or a bit more moneyed / essex forex trader shiny shoes scene rather than working men's club

نكبة (nakhchivan), Wednesday, 26 November 2014 22:07 (nine years ago) link

"Kindo" is fondly remembered in Huddersfield by older fans, I have no memory of him at all! Hemsworth/South Elmsall is an usual area for him to show up, one of the mining towns decimated in the 80's and nowhere near any of his former clubs or where he hails from. I once spent a week in South Elmsall upgrading the bus station lighting, it is a very hermetic kind of place and I suppose they still have a strong WMC culture. I guarantee he will be a better speaker than Frank Worthington.

I can remember seeing Frank Worthington in the Lindley branch of an independent bookies talking to the regulars inquisitively about Bolton Wanderers, he didn't even seem to know what league they were in and he was due to do an after dinner gig there that evening.

To see ex England and Sheff Weds player David Hirst call Thornhill FC on 01924 463299 for tickets for the sportsman's dinner, £35 each

I saw this in my local chippy, I thought £35 seems a bit steep for an audience with an England international nobody has heard of! He scored a goal in a friendly against New Zealand in '91.

the world of legends works in mysterious ways but he is a more obvious draw than many of the obscurities here ('big trev' aylott?)

sheffield weds must be in the biggest twenty or so teams in the country in terms of fanbase and he might be one of their best long serving players of the last 30 years

during their last spell in the big leagues too, and a good age for a legend since he will be familiar to late 20s fans onwards, and middle aged nostalgists especially

Tony Blair has spoken of his “really dire” attempts at being a comedian while a student at Oxford University. In an onstage interview with the comedian Matt Forde, the former prime minister revealed that his standup performances were a “rich vein of embarrassment” and included skits about TV shows such as Star Trek. Asked if he dressed up for such routines, he replied: “I’ve got a terrible feeling I was a character called Captain Kink … If there had been social media, can you imagine? They could have [used it] as the Tory party political party broadcast. That would have been it!”
